(Jane has had several vivid dreams since we held the last session; they’ve been of the type described in recent private sessions—combinations of nightmarish events and characters, along with flashes of insight into the causes for the symptoms, and visions of herself walking normally, etc. [...] However, they’ve been valuable in showing that she is still contending with previously buried fears. [...]
(“All right, but nothing I’ve said here is new. I’ve had these questions for years.”)
(We’ve had several of our famous discussions since the last session on March 25. [...]
(Several times during recent weeks I’ve said that I wished we’d withdrawn Mass Events from publication, using the disclaimer controversy as a ready-made excuse. [...]
I’ve used this method often, with excellent results. Sometimes I’ve remembered the dreams, sometimes not, but I’ve always awakened refreshed and renewed, and the effects last. The dreams I’ve recalled during such instances have been inspirational: strong enough not only to conquer a period of the blues but to restore me to exceptionally good spirits.
[...] I’ve never dreamed of Seth, and I find this rather strange. I’ve often awakened, fully alert, in the middle of the night, suddenly conscious that I’ve been giving a kind of Seth session. [...]
[...] If the attempt fails, then the problem or action [as we’ve seen before] may materialize as an illness.
(I should also add that Sue, one of the aides we’ve become acquainted with, showed us pictures of her two young sons. Those gorgeous children struck home with me for many reasons — partly because of Seth’s material, and partly because I think at my own age [65] I’ve come to appreciate more and more the truly creative act that being a parent is. [...]
(All during this time, October–November, we’ve also been involved in a series of hassles with the foreign publishers Ankh-Hermes and Ariston. We’ve learned to our sorrow and rage that both entities have cut their versions of Seth Speaks, without our permission or knowledge, and have struggled to exert what force we could in order to rectify the situation. [...] As I’ve said to Jane more than once, “I wonder what we ought to know that Tam hasn’t told us”—meaning of course that every time a hassle develops with Prentice-Hall we find out a new batch of information that Tam has known all along but never relayed to us. [...]
(We’ve lost the old sense of freedom we had with Prentice-Hall, where we can just do our work, ship it to them, and expect it to be well handled, with royalties paid every so often and a trust both felt and expressed between the two sides. Now we’ve become suspicious of everything they tell us. [...] I for one am in favor of taking a stand, as Jane well knows, but as I’ve told her, I don’t expect her to go along. [...]
(The little I’ve worked with the pendulum tells me my troubles are rooted in money attitudes, as well as the production time I’ve lost on Mass Events for the last two weeks and more. [...]
(And finally, I can note that in recent years I’ve had some experiences of my own with the seventh inner sense. These have been very pleasant, but not nearly as deep as Jane’s. While immersed in them I’ve always been exceptionally sensitive to sound.)
[...] That material contains passages that are of special interest here, and I’ve combined them in these excerpts:)
[...] Listing them as I’ve done here is also apt to artificially set them aside from the flow of insights within the poetry Jane has written since childhood; actually, of course, all are related.
[...] I’ve often speculated that clues to oncoming lives must exist within the hundreds of dreams I’ve recorded.
“I’ve had several new experiences with altered states of consciousness,” she wrote in labored script, “and these are quite different than anything I’ve done before. [...]
[...] During our work on these pieces Jane and I have automatically been led back to earlier material again and again, but each time we’ve tried to plunge deeper into the topic under discussion, to uncover new layers of meaning and insight. [...]
Aside from any books that he may produce himself (and on whatever subjects), I’ve already made plans to put together a short volume featuring Seth’s discussions on the magical approach to reality. [...]
(My own hassles with my side, groin and scrotum are the usual ones I’ve had at times before—especially last year at this time. My painting hasn’t been going well lately, and I’ve been concerned about that. [...] Still, through it all I’ve been sleeping well and eating okay also. I don’t suppose this description adequately describes the depth of my feelings, since I’ve really been bothered for some time, to the extent that I no longer feel free physically, and once again have contemplated seeking medical help as a last resort.
(This is the first session we’ve had since March 6. I think Jane held it only because I haven’t been feeling well for several weeks. [...]
(For the past week we’ve been trying a “new” treatment for Jane’s symptoms —one we read about recently, and which involves the application of cold packs to her knees and hands for starters. [...]
[...] We’ve been involved in so many activities since then that it’s difficult to decide which of them to refer to in these notes, and to what extent. Except for the few listed below, then, it may be sufficient to just state that we’ve been in our hill house for a month, and that after much hard physical labor2 we’ve settled down enough to resume our natural rhythms of painting, sessions, books, and play. [...]
(We’ve largely finished correcting proofs on both the text and the drawing captions for Jane’s Adventures in Consciousness, which will be published in June. We’ve also seen a first color proof of the jacket design for her Dialogues, scheduled for publication next fall.4
(In ordinary terms, I think that during our first month in the hill house we’ve been busy forming a fresh psychic atmosphere within which we can feel comfortable — and that anyone in a similar situation intuitively does the same thing. [...]
[...] Sometimes over the years, in my frustration at being unable to find a certain line or passage in a session, or in something Jane or I have written, I’ve ended up thinking that I merely imagined its being: “It doesn’t really exist at all,” I’ve told myself, “so why am I wasting my time looking for it?” Yet once I start hunting, it’s difficult to stop until I’ve exhausted all reasonable chances of finding what I want. [...] To suit me, I’ve told Jane more than once, the index would have to be practically as long as our lifework itself. I’ve gone through those episodes a number of times. [...]
[...] We have kept those promises for the 26 years we’ve been together. [...] She’s certainly given me the complete freedom to be myself, and I’ve floundered often. [...] I’ve tried, in many ways. [...]
I plan to mention certain secular affairs that I’ve kept track of while Jane has been producing Dreams, but mainly these notes will deal with personal and professional events in our own lives. I’ve organized most of the material in a roughly chronological order. [...]
[...] Then: “Well, I don’t tell you everything, but for some time now I’ve known that Seth gives what I call fill-in sessions. I’ve labeled them that way in my mind. [...]
[...] Simply, I thought it would be a good idea if Seth would tell us about what good things we’ve managed to accomplish through the years as far as Jane’s symptoms go. It would be nice to know what hassles we’ve surmounted, that no longer apply. [...] But surely we’ve accomplished some beneficial things too.
(Last Saturday I mailed the last four sessions for Volume 2 of “Unknown” Reality to Prentice-Hall, and this week I’ve already finished up Chapter 1 for Psyche.
[...] I still had faith in the pendulum, since I’ve obtained many good results.
[...] We’ve heard of him before—Donald Hebb, now 72—and his own story is a classic case of self-suggestion over the years.)
