6. Seth’s passage reminded both of us of “If Toes Had Eyes,” a poem Jane wrote some four months ago, which she’s using in an earlier chapter of God of Jane. Here’s the first verse:

[...] Feet moving—both sets of toes—a bit. [...]

[...] This also applies to beneficial alterations in the ankles and toes, where additional fluids resulting in the swelling effect help cushion the new motion in particular of some joints, so there is no grating. [...]

[...] However, we’ve been extremely pleased to see that in the last couple of days her legs have acquired a good deal more movement at the knees: her toes spanned a distance from front to back of a good six inches as she swung her legs back and forth. [...]

[...] The child expects the parents to come to its support in the same way that it expects its own fingers and toes to support its various positions and decisions. [...]

[...] This was an overall situation from head to toe. [...]

An added note: When you can, a gentle massaging of the tops of Ruburt’s^* toes, by the nails, and perhaps down a bit toward the first joints, will help increase the body’s entire circulation. [...]

[...] To be told my hearing might possibly be gone for good, or that I might need an instant operation to avoid losing a finger, to be told that it was certainly possible I could lose fingers and toes—all of those suggestions and ideas, with their implications, were hard to take, and in many ways I handled them well. [...] If one family deals with the nature of healing, then you can slice it down to the healing of a toe … an ear … an eye.
