You are still both in the habit of minimizing improvements, and negatively projecting into the future, although at times you have spurts of confidence that are responsible for Ruburt’s quite definite physical improvement.

(Apropos of the above, I quote briefly from an article in the New York Times for May 9, 1968, written by Walter Sullivan and datelined May 8 from Cambridge, Massachusetts. [...] A friend gives us the Times after he is through with it, the day after publication.

He is learning presently, and very well, to control this sometime condition; and it dwindles, to appear only occasionally in times of stress. Daily use of those particular back exercises, with their mental discipline, will further aid in his development, until he will find indeed that he can not only relax at will, but even when he does not have time to will relaxation, that is, relaxation will be the built-in conditioned reflex that panic used to be.

[...] The use of psychological time, to some large degree, also performs this function. [...]

You were also highly involved with what was going on in the country at the time, where in the life immediately previous you cared little for any but your immediate family, and rarely moved beyond your house. In the Irish life therefore you chose to roam freely and to inform others as to the happenings of the time.

[...] It began at approximately the time noted above, and continued through most of the afternoon.

[...] You may at some time be in communication with others. [...]

[...] If reincarnation is to be considered, their disturbed relationship this time might reflect past connections of a different yet analogous nature, and may also have important effects upon any future ones. Additionally, Jane could have chosen the present relationship to eventually help her temper her reception of and reaction to the Seth material, making her extra-cautious; this, even though she’d seen to it ahead of time that she would be born with that certain combination of fortitude and innocence necessary for her to press on with her chosen abilities. She could have made a pact ahead of time to “borrow” certain strong mystical qualities from her maternal grandfather, who was part French Canadian and part Canadian Indian (specific tribe unknown by us), and with whom she strongly identified as a child. [...]

It should be obvious by now that in a large measure all of the selves and approaches I’ve delineated in these essays simply represent Seth playing around semantically, as he tries to get various portions of his ideas through our heads at certain times. [...]

[...] Seth says this spontaneous creation happens all of the time through the actions of consciousness. [...]

[...] All touch, to each of you now, was not innocent or joyful encounter; it meant “How far will this lead, and is the time of the month correct?” This applies to you both. [...] At the same time however, implied in any such touches, in his mind also was the question “How far will this go?”

[...] When you were working full time some years ago at Artistic your fears that Ruburt would become pregnant became an obsession. You were already breaking one of your directives, you see, in working full time at other pursuits, and so you became twice as frightened that you would fall into the world’s familiar mold, have children in which case the job would become indispensable.

You chose ahead of time therefore to be driven along certain directions. [...]

(This time it began in both my feet and moved up my legs to my hips, then manifested itself in the back of my head. [...] Seth went into the experience in detail in the 24th session, explaining how at times it represented my attempts to perceive him, and at other times my attempts to perceive other data outside the usual sense channels.)

(Seth told us at the time that the apparition was of him, and that Bill could see it but that Jane and I could not because we were too “fussy” about what we allowed ourselves to see. He said that in the future—time unspecified—we should be able to see his apparition at times, but by no means regularly.

[...] The first time I had asked Seth for data on a category not mentioned, namely color. The second time I asked him to start over the whole thing. This time I tried something else.

There is great traffic flow in a city: A body knows how to leap out of the way in a moment’s time from an approaching car. [...] There are decisions made in periods of time so brief you cannot imagine them—reactions that are almost over before they begin, reactions so fast you cannot perceive them as the body responds to its inner reality, and to all the stimuli from the exterior environment. (Still quietly, but at a good pace:) When a skunk is frightened, it throws off a foul odor indeed, and when people are frightened they react in somewhat the same fashion at times, biologically reacting to stimuli in the environment that they consider alarming. [...]

Often such information will be given time and time again, in different ways, until its importance is finally impressed upon your mind. [...]

[...] The time of the year had something to do with it, for many people are already spending spare time Christmas shopping.

You and your reincarnated selves, or personalities, are not imprisoned in time. [...] Time has open ends in all directions or such a thing as probabilities would not exist. [...]

[...] As usual this vision was over before I realized I had seen it, yet during the sighting I was for the first time unaware of my body lying on the bed.

[...] And you are tempted at times to close these off for that reason, but you are also afraid that you have gone so far so quickly that the abilities cannot be closed off, and you cannot close the channel. [...] At the same time, because of your background, you also distrust mystical matters to some extent. [...]

[...] He related a dream in which he went to turn the TV set off, but it stayed on no matter how many times he clicked it off and on. [...]
