Comes to me today that years ago I got scared when I thought anyhow that Rob’s parents “shit on us” when we were broke; before I hadn’t worried about money—just writing . [...]

The feeling even astonished you, so by contrast it should show you your own mode of thought habitually, and by implication suggest Ruburt’s. The experience should have been illuminating.

(Also while on this walk, Jane had the thought that death approaches a personality when the personality becomes less and less able to focus his energies fully on this plane, when he can no longer control his physical image as well as in the past. She thought Seth might discuss this subject this evening.

Thoughts and dreams do indeed possess a validity and reality of which the subconscious has always been aware, and there is in some sense a responsibility here involved.

[...] In the morning I thought strongly of Venetian blinds, that I would like some on the kitchen windows. [...]

Thoughts of peace, particularly in the middle of chaos, take great energy. People who can ignore the physical evidence of wars and purposely think thoughts of peace will triumph — but in your terminology the word “meek” has come to mean spineless, inadequate, lacking energy. [...]

It is not true, of course, that before the time of modern psychology man had a concept of himself that dealt with conscious exterior aspects only, although it has been written that until that time man thought of himself as a kind of flat-surfaced self — minus, for example, subconscious or unconscious complexity.

[...] It finds in the present no justification in fact for such interpretations, while your thoughts act as if those situations were presently before you, to be confronted. [...]

You should both, as Ruburt thought earlier, go out into the public at least one night within a two-week period. [...]

[...] I came across his essay, The Poet, in which he talked about the ‘speakers’ as being those who use their inner abilities to ‘speak the inner secrets of nature.’ The essay impressed me strongly, seeming to echo elements in my own writing and psychic characteristics; and of course I thought of Seth’s ‘Speakers’ as he described them in Chapter Twenty of Seth Speaks. My thoughts are as weak

[...] An artist will be tolerated — only if his work sells well, for example, in which case it will be thought that the artist is simply trickier than most in discovering a way of making money.

(Jane tried to half-heartedly deny this, without really considering the question, I thought—not that I wanted her to to any great degree before Seth got into it. [...]
