(7:58.) The discomforts of a physical nature led to instant responses. He could enjoy the cooling drink (Coke), the change of position, the sudden relief of turning from one hip to another. His weaknesses were out in the open, dramatically presented, and from that point, unless he chose death he could only go forward: for suddenly he felt that there was after all some (underlined) room to move, that achievements were possible, where before all achievements seemed beside the point in the face of his expected superhuman activity.

(Long pause at 8:00.) In a manner of speaking, the Sinful Self created the superhuman self-image that demanded so much, and it encased Ruburt’s body as if in concrete. Well, that image cracked and crumbled in the hospital experience, leaving Ruburt with his more native, far more realistic image of himself. It is one he can work with.

(We were very encouraged by two points especially that Seth had mentioned this evening: that Jane’s thyroid had repaired itself before—which event now could free her from dependence upon medication—and that the Sinful Self’s superhuman image had “cracked and crumbled in the hospital experience.”

(These represented key points, I told Jane. They were very important, for they’d leave the body free to heal itself. “We’ll see what develops. I wonder what you’ll be doing six months from now, if Seth’s right?” I asked. “Pretty interesting.... The body finally became so desperate to free itself of that rigid Sinful-Self superhuman image that it took itself into the hospital for a month—even if it did almost die in order to get itself in there. But it got rid of that image....” Jane agreed.

[...] In a fashion that particular approach, for all of its reliance upon “sorcery,” is not actually true to the magical approach at all, because it insists so fervently upon the impediments that stand in man’s way, and stresses the importance of rituals and methods, and the almost superhuman effort that is required (pause) in order to meet the “magical ends.” [...]

In the light of this discussion, now, that self was as unrealistic at its end of the spectrum as the Sinful Self was at the other, for Ruburt felt that he was supposed to demonstrate a certain kind of superhuman feat, not only managing on occasion to uncover glimpses of man’s greater abilities, but to demonstrate these competently at the drop of a hat, willingly at the request of others. [...]

[...] All however would appear as superhuman in contrast to those civilizations that encountered them. [...]
