As Seth continued dictation I was fired by his purpose to make the unknown elements of human life at least partially visible — an audacious goal, I thought — and I tried to do my part in recording all such disclosures as they appeared in our lives and were reflected in the experiences of our friends and students.

Another student asked, “Do we often project our fears and guilts on to probable personalities?”

I’m also still embarrassed to contemplate the merciless racket Jane, Seth, and their students made after class began in 1966. [...]

[...] Skidmore suspended Jane’s scholarship at the end of her third year because she’d attended an all-night party with three professors and three other students; along with discussions of philosophy there had been drinking and smoking, but very modestly on her part. [...]
