Those kinds of conflicts can only exist in a society in which the entire concept of creativity is segmented, in which the creative processes are often seen as inner assembly lines leading to specific products: a society in which the very nature of creativity itself is largely ignored unless its “products” serve specific ends.

(8:53.) Early artists hoped to understand the very nature of creativity itself as they tried to mimic earth’s forms. Poetry and painting were both functional in ways that I will describe in our next book (humorously, elaborately casual), and “esthetic.” But poetry and painting have always involved primarily man’s attempt to understand himself and his world. The original functions of art—meaning poetry and painting here specifically—have been largely forgotten. The true artist in those terms was always primarily—in your terms again—a psychic or a mystic. His specific art (pause) was both his method of understanding his own creativity, and a way of exploring the vast creativity of the universe—and also served as a container or showcase that displayed his knowledge as best he could.

(Pause.) The two of you thought of yourselves specifically as a writer—or rather a poet—and an artist before our sessions began. I would like to clear up some important issues.

[...] Besides this, in an odd fashion, they lack a certain specific nature, as I will shortly explain, and there are too many of them by far to be handled at one session. That is, their number precludes any one single clear path, specifically noted. [...]

[...] The pendulum can best be used to deal with specific events, with specific attitudes. [...]

(Pause in a forceful delivery.) You may begin to exaggerate the gulf between this generalized ideal and the specific evidences of man’s “greed and corruption” that you see so obviously about you. [...]

Of course, these continuing improvements will show greater specific results. [...]

Beyond that platform (which is not your own native one) is another that operates as “high art,” in which activity is for its own sake, for the joy and discovery of the performance or execution, a high play that sets the needs of the world at least momentarily aside, rises up above specifics into those vaster realms from which specifics emerge. [...]

[...] Practically, you can only react to the world as you encounter it through specific experiences, and you cannot escape it, for it will come to your door. The earlier questions about fear of the world, for example, reinforced to some extent, now, generalized fears, without for example specific incidents connected to them.

[...] There is nothing wrong with asking “Are you afraid of thus and so?” of the pendulum, for example—particularly when specific events are involved, and where action is possible. [...]

[...] The writing-down of feelings and any subsequent pendulum follow-through on specific feelings or events allows you to deal with necessary Framework 1 activity.

[...] There is at least a possibility that you and Ruburt, using your own individual inner senses, may at times perceive different aspects of a given situation, and that the individual perceptions will enable you to achieve a greater knowledge of a specific, or any specific, happening than either of you separately could achieve. Did you have any specific questions for me?

(We were interested in a specific location especially in view of Seth’s mentioning people with well-developed abilities. [...]

[...] These included specific references as to names, initials, dates, and places. [...] Seth did give material pertaining to objects also, but he was more apt to give specific information on Dr. Instream’s daily life.

[...] (This never happened, incidentally, though the impressions given were not always as specific as we would have liked.) Actually I didn’t care what was in the envelopes—I just wanted to know if Seth could tell us, and I wanted him to be absolutely right each time. [...]

[...] Most jobs, or even vocations, carry along with them implied guidelines, specifications, and definite requirements that serve to define the work involved. Within those specifications certain actions are performed. Within those specifications certain standards are met or not met. [...] Very often specific meanings are given to certain words, so that you have what amounts to a professional vocabulary. Often specific mediums of expression are concerned. [...]

Ruburt is operating in an area in which there are few such specifications, simply because no one knows what can or cannot be done, practically speaking, at psychic levels. [...]

The ideal may be specific, then, or ill-defined, and man’s idea of “the good” varies considerably. [...] “The best” idealist is a practical one—someone who realizes that most men like to work with specifics. [...]

Generally speaking, in those terms, the law is wise, for it forces you to make specifications, each one bringing about further definition, so that all parties at least understand (in parentheses theoretically [louder]) the meaning of the terms.

You may not achieve ideal solutions with the law, but it should allow practical specific actualization, at least in part, of an ideal situation. [...]

[...] The various methods simply focus all of your concentration upon a specific area, shutting out any distractions.

[...] The one prerequisite is an intense concentration upon specific incoming data to the exclusion of everything else. [...]

[...] One of the troubles is that too specific distinctions are made between the conscious and unconscious minds. [...]

You cannot pinpoint the beginning of the universe—for (suddenly louder) that beginning is simultaneously too vast and too small to be contained in any of your specifications. While everything seems neat and tidy within those specifications, and whole, you operate with brilliant nonchalance in the theater of time and space. [...]

[...] In your range of activity you can adequately identify events, project them in time and space, only by isolating certain portions of much larger and much smaller events, and recognizing a highly specific order of events as real.

Now with Ruburt, not necessarily generally, specific suggestions work well, when they are not overdone for example, and the progress then serves as an extra reinforcement. Regardless of the reasons, there are habits of thought, specifically, regarding the symptoms, for example. [...]

[...] You mentioned the foot specifically, reminding him several times, and this reinforced the suggestions.

[...] Many of your old sessions on that sort of thing specifically will be of benefit. [...]

It certainly seems that the best way to get specific answers is to ask specific questions, and the rational mind thinks first of all of something like a list of questions. [...]

All of that can be transferred to other areas of your lives, and in particular to Ruburt’s [physical] difficulties, I do understand your joint concern, and in holding the session I know you want specific answers — which I always give to the best of my ability.

What we will be discussing for several sessions, with your permission jointly — and, I hope, with your joint enthusiasm — will be the magical approach to reality, and to your private lives specifically, in order to create that kind of atmosphere in which the answers become experienced (underlined).

[...] I mention this specifically since in the session itself I tell you that the concentration should be on work and activities, and not (underlined) on the condition you are trying to get rid of.
