For instance, the individual might be talking along normally enough when he or she hears the sirens of a police car in the distance. Instantly the person might leap up, convinced that that was evidence of the pursuit of the FBI or other agency.

The car with the siren might disappear, yet the alarmed person’s attitude and actions may very well instantly cause his or her companion to realize that something was clearly amiss. The disturbed person may immediately begin a long tirade, describing previous episodes in which he or she was hunted from city to city. There may be further complications, in which the person insists that phones were bugged, letters opened, and privacy was constantly invaded.

[...] At the same time the city fire whistle began to sound insistently; then we heard several other sirens.

(Two automobiles equipped with blaring sirens sped past our apartment house, but Jane didn’t seem to be disturbed. [...]

(An ambulance then came across the Walnut Street bridge, siren blaring. It was held up by a car making a turn beneath the traffic light, and so it paused there with siren screaming until the car moved out of the way. [...]

(I now wonder what triggered the episode—empathy with Jane’s material, or did I respond to the piercing sound of the siren, or was it a combination? Perhaps, as well as appreciating the siren with my outer senses, that is my ears, I also felt it.)

(As the sound of the siren began to fade, my old familiar sensation that Seth has called the feeling of sound, swept over me quite strongly from head to toe—the rich tingling, the deep thrilling internally; I felt as though I might be lifted up; this feeling is very pleasant and sensuous now that I am no longer alarmed by it.
