(It rained this evening, and in the cooler weather we held the session in our small back room. [...] Jane was quite restless during the session, changing position in her rocker frequently. She spoke with her eyes closed for the entire session; at times her delivery was quite fast, other times it was broken by pauses. [...]
[...] I hoped aloud that Seth would discuss it tonight, but as in my dream mentioned in the 160th session, he did not. [...]
[...] For a related specific incident, see the description of her dentist episode in the 152nd session. [...]
(Jane said she had experienced another “concept feeling” while speaking, as she had in the 149th, 151st and 153rd sessions. [...]
(For notes on a couple of Jane’s other experiences with altered states of consciousness, see the 645th session in Chapter Eleven, and the 653rd session in Chapter Thirteen.)
[...] Professional matters were also involved, so their conversation lasted until 10:47 p.m. We didn’t go back to the session. [...]
SESSION 662, MAY 9, 1973
9:40 P.M. WEDNESDAY
(Jane had no idea of what Seth would talk about during the session, although both of us hoped he would discuss the events of last Friday evening, September 23, at home. [...] Copies of both accounts will be attached to this session. I will also add notes as the session unfolds.
[...] Strange as it seems, I had forgotten the envelope object’s identity; I had prepared this envelope for the session due Monday, September 19; that session was not held and I saved the envelope. During tonight’s session I realized I had forgotten what the object was, even though I had chosen it. [...]
[...] The same sort of development would not have been initiated here in a session for some time, simply because the emotional conditions would not be met. [...]
I am speaking of the tendency in you both to completely (underline) disconnect the sessions and any direct psychic display from everyday life. [...]
(This afternoon at about 2 PM workmen took down the tree that had partially fallen on March 6. See the 33rd session. [...] And as I watched it strike the ground, I felt a wave of sensation sweep over me, the rich tingling, the feeling of perhaps an inner wind that I described first in the 24th session. [...]
Such exercises as a rule will not take up time during sessions however, but will appear at other occasions, consume hardly any clock time at all, and seem spontaneous. [...] We will go into the other inner senses at future sessions.
[...] By first break her voice was normal, and since these conditions prevailed for the rest of the session they need not be mentioned again.)
[...] Jane was dissociated more fully, she said, than she had been earlier in the session. We were somewhat surprised at the rather abrupt end of the session, but not displeased either. [...]
(At 8:45 Jane had no idea of the material for the session tonight. [...]
[...] I now have my dream notebook in full swing, and since I had more dreams on the order of the two already discussed by Seth, I had my dream notebook open on the table as session time approached, in case these dreams were used in the material.
A few remarks here, tying in with our previous session.
(“Come out at a quarter to eight,” Jane told me at 7:15, “and we’ll have a session.” She’d mentioned a session earlier in the day, and so had I. At the same time she’d slept in her chair most of the day, and was doing so again at the card table, when I finally got out there at about 7:55. [...]
(To my surprise, Jane launched into the session before I could finish the above notes; I had to return to them after the session. [...]
I will give you the information at another session. [...]
[...] I then wondered aloud at the apparent suddenness of the breakup of symptoms, just three days after my pendulum session of last Sunday, and two days after the session with Seth on Monday, November 6. This brought Seth back at once.)
(This session is deleted from the record.
(It will be recalled that I had my excellent pendulum session last Sunday, November 5, pinpointing the part I played in Jane’s symptoms. [...]
[...] You have been able to reason with your subconscious, of late, and get through to it, because with the pendulum and through our sessions we have been able to unscramble the uncertain state in which it found itself. [...]
(At 9:15 I read the last session to Jane from my notes, since I hadn’t started typing it yet. She was in a most relaxed state as she listened, yet intended to have a session. [...]
[...] The last time she’d done this had been early on March 4; her material then was on parallel man, alternate man, and probable man; Seth mentioned it that same evening in the 687th session, and it furnished the basis for Section 2 of this volume. [...]
[...] It came about because we’d been discussing our deceased parents and probabilities, in connection with the first two sessions [679–80] of “Unknown” Reality. [...]
(We discussed the data given above as we waited for tonight’s session to begin. [...]
2. Indeed, Jane was to hold several sessions before we realized that Seth had begun a new book — see the 683rd session in this section. [...] We suspended our regular sessions after that, yet were as busy as ever. [...] She also gave a number of private Seth sessions for the two of us on a variety of subjects. We ended up calling a portion of one of those the 678th session and added it to our records, since the material, which Jane received at my request, concerned probabilities and Jerusalem. [...]
Idea Construction did serve as a psychic trigger, however; it led Jane to her outline for How to Develop Your ESP Power (see Note 2 for Seth’s Preface in this book), then to the beginning of the Seth sessions two months later. [...] In Seth Speaks, see her Introduction and Session 596 in the Appendix for further references to that original manuscript.
SESSION 679
(Before the session I showed Jane a childhood photograph of herself, and one of me. [...]
[...] At 3:30 she started to read the session material from the last two days, but had considerable trouble doing so. She finally finished the part of the session for the day before yesterday, but by then couldn’t manage yesterday’s material, so I laid aside the mail and read it to her. [...]
[...] I found out differently when I turned her on her left side after the session: For it turned out that she’d been lying upon a roll of tape that someone—Georgia or Phyllis, probably—had left lying on the bed when they changed her dressings this morning. [...]
(Late in the afternoon Jane said she’d have a session after all—I’d thought she was going to pass it up today, since neither one of us seemed at their best. [...]
DELETED SESSION
After discussing another dream of mine, Seth said good night at 10:11 P.M. “I felt so relaxed before the session I was like a dishrag,” Jane said with a laugh. I told her the session was excellent, and that I’ll be adding relevant parts of it to my dream notebook.)
(Four months ago I wrote in Note 1 for Session 885 that through a series of misunderstandings the people at Ankh-Hermes, a publishing company in Holland, had violated their contract with Prentice-Hall by issuing a condensed translation of Seth Speaks. [...]
Tonight, Seth suggested that “portions of this session can be appended to the book,” meaning Dreams, but I found it easier to offer most of his generalized material verbatim while eliminating his information on one of my dreams.)
(9:53.) Again, in our material on suffering (see the 895th session, for instance), I mentioned that illness serves purposes—that it has a face-saving quality in your society—so here I am speaking of the body’s own abilities. [...]
(We haven’t paid any attention to the last session, for December 26, 1977, yet it contains a line that I’ve thought of often since it came through: “Ruburt....constantly concentrates upon what is still wrong.” [...] For tonight, then, I wanted a session with answers in it, so that we could try again in spite of past failures. [...]
(“How is all of this hooked up with the walking difficulty?” By the question, I meant how has Jane’s walking difficulties through the years resulted from her feeling that she should be all those things Seth recounted at the start of this session—a TV personality, a great psychic, writer, and so forth. [...] However, the original question remains, and I explained it to Jane after the session; she suggested I ask it again next time.)
[...] We planned for a session last night but it didn’t develop.
(I was also puzzled about our problems because, as I told Jane before the session, I couldn’t see where as individuals we were doing anything so terribly wrong. [...]
1. Jane Roberts writes in The God of Jane: “Since late 1963, I’ve clocked approximately 4,000 hours of trancetime, during which the Seth sessions have been held twice weekly. [...] I don’t feel ‘possessed’ or ‘invaded’ during sessions. [...]
[...] Actually, the sessions usually last anywhere from one to three hours, so I suppose that many people spend a good deal more time than that playing golf or tennis.
In the summer of 1980 I missed Seth sessions for nearly two months. [...]
(The sessions regularly scheduled for November 9 and 14 were not held because we were too busy.
We spent many sessions in the past discussing the nature of action.
Now, we will close our session. [...]
[...] As far as she was aware, she said, she hadn’t been reading any material lately that would have given rise to the content of the session.)
