(John Bradley, of Williamsport, PA, who has witnessed several sessions, stopped by this afternoon on his regular rounds, but could not stay for the session this evening. [...] Seth has dealt with the machinations below the surface at Searle in various sessions. [...]

(In an effort to further clear up Seth’s rather involved interpretation of Jane’s dream of September 7, I made it a point to ask Jane just before the session was due tonight about the statement Seth-Jane had made on page 46, involving Jane’s friend, Marie Tubbs, in childbirth. Marie wrote Jane on October 11 that she has not given birth for two years, and Seth dealt with what looked like a discrepancy between the two sets of facts to a partial degree in the 98th session. [...]

Obviously, Seth didn’t follow through on the statement he’d made near the end of the last book session, which we held much earlier this month: “Remind me, for our next session, to wind in a discussion of those subjective entities as they learned how to translate themselves into physical individuals.” [...] Such omissions can easily result when the session routine is interrupted—we simply may not keep a particular session that closely in mind as we become involved in other matters during a break. [...]

(Five scheduled session dates have passed since we held the 884th session three weeks ago; we missed four of those, but did hold a private, or deleted, session on October 10. [...]

[...] We’ve never asked Seth to comment upon either this project itself or anyone involved with it—nor has he volunteered such information, even in private sessions.

During this session hiatus I’ve been spending much time upon a series of letters to the publishers of Seth Speaks in Switzerland and in the Netherlands, as well as to those in charge at Prentice-Hall.¹ Last Saturday night we had a very interesting meeting with a psychologist from New York City. In extracting material on dreams from our many sessions, I have, to some extent, ripped it out of its living context. Each session, for example, includes Rob’s notes which provide a constant physical framework and reference to our daily activities. [...] Seth’s own book, Seth Speaks: The Eternal Validity of the Soul, will be presented using the session format, however, so that the entire flavor of the sessions can be appreciated.

(Jane said she’d like a session as soon as we’d finished a late supper—by 7:20 PM—and expressed the hope that Seth would deal with her immediate situation—sort of an emergency treatment. [...]

[...] I should add that Monday night’s session had actually begun to give us glimmers of hope, and that this buoyed-up feeling had begun to manifest itself this morning, whereas yesterday we’d felt pretty hopeless about the situation. [...]

[...] In the 198th session, Seth said she would receive a letter from her publisher by the next Saturday. [...] We have yet to receive any word on our kitchen enlargement, which Seth also predicted would be settled by the Saturday after the 198th session.

I have used a portion of this session to deal with rather personal matters, and of course we discussed particular dreams at sessions immediately previous. [...]

(In the 104th session, Seth said that Jane would sell some of the short stories from the group she was working on at the time of the session. [...]

(I planned no envelope test for this evening’s session, thinking its place could be taken by the third and final Gallagher clairvoyant test.

(Our talk lasted almost an hour in spite of myself, for I didn’t want her to get upset before a session. I felt that we couldn’t afford to miss sessions these days. [...]

[...] I asked that Seth discuss it if she held a session tonight. [...] Seth himself had referred to her dilemma in the excerpt I’ve taken from the private session for January 26, 1981, very well.

In this session is material that will indeed allow Ruburt to get out of the present situation, but we will continue the discussion at our next session. [...] End of session, and a fond and magical good evening to you both.

All of that can be transferred to other areas of your lives, and in particular to Ruburt’s [physical] difficulties, I do understand your joint concern, and in holding the session I know you want specific answers — which I always give to the best of my ability.

[...] In that regard, Ruburt’s response before such a session is natural, and to an extent magical, because he knows that no matter what he has been taught, he must to some degree (underlined) forget the questions and the mood that accompanies them with one level of his consciousness, in order to create the proper kind of atmosphere at another level of consciousness — an atmosphere that allows the answers to come even though they may be presented in a different way than that expected by the rational mind.

What we will be discussing for several sessions, with your permission jointly — and, I hope, with your joint enthusiasm — will be the magical approach to reality, and to your private lives specifically, in order to create that kind of atmosphere in which the answers become experienced (underlined).

(After the success of last night’s session, during which Jane manifested some startling phenomena with her left hand and arm, we were naturally curious to learn what Seth would have to say about it during a regular session with the board. We decided to try for another unscheduled session, rather than wait until next Monday, January 6, as we would have done ordinarily. [...]

[...] This certainly must hint at some conscious control, Joseph, and should make you feel more confident about our sessions, not less. I am hardly worried that your critical sense will dim in this or other sessions. [...]

Your brother was born on the 22nd of April, I believe in 1671 (I wrote 1871 in an earlier session. [...]

(This morning I bought clothes at Harold’s and money orders for the budget at ES&L. The extra activities meant that I got only half of yesterday’s session typed up. [...] At 3:10 Jane read the part of the session I had typed. [...] Then I read the rest of the session to her from my notes. [...]

[...] She asked me to ask Seth if she was in a trance when she did her motions sometimes: “If I can ever calm down enough to do it,” she added, referring to having a session. [...]

[...] The motion is taking place under the auspices of the session, to reintroduce him to his own agility. [...]

[...] I suspected she’d cut the session short because of the hour, our schedule, etc. [...]

(That material actually flows from a session held seven years earlier: the 16th for January 15, 1964, which still contains Seth-Jane’s longest delivery on such craft. We found the information in the session quite intriguing because we thought it offered a fresh approach to a very controversial puzzle. [...] [In the early sessions, incidentally, Seth used the word “plane” often, but not long afterward began the general changeover to “reality,” which for the most part we like better. However, note at the end of these excerpts from the 16th session the meanings and delineations he found within that word “plane” — even though he regarded it as our term.])

(Seth hasn’t often talked about UFO’s — unidentified flying objects — in the sessions. [...] Occasionally he’ll mention them in connection with another subject; as an example, see the two paragraphs about “saucers” and the pulsating nature of atoms and molecules in the ESP class session for January 12, 1971, in the Appendix of Seth Speaks.

(In closing out the last session, Seth told us that he’d “cover everything that needs to be covered” in his books, and I wrote that sometimes I’d still choose to insert other particularly apropos material of his into whatever book he might be producing at the time. My chance to show how independent I am about doing just that arose much sooner than I’d expected it to — in tonight’s session, in fact. So inserting this material puts off by one — at least — Seth’s first session for Chapter 8 of Mass Events.

(At the end of the 852nd session I mentioned a letter Jane had received last month from a professor of physics, and that in a recent nonbook session Seth had come through with a partial answer to some of the professor’s questions. [...]

SESSION 855, MAY 21, 1979
9:15 P.M. MONDAY

[...] Jane hadn’t looked at Seth Speaks for long periods during its production in order to avoid conscious involvement with it — but, she said recently, smiling, she plans to read and use this work session by session as she delivers it. [...]

(In answer to many queries, I’ll explain here why I prefer to write these sessions down instead of using a recorder. Shortly after Seth began to speak through Jane in late 1963 we tried recording the material, but I soon learned that I can type a session from my notes a lot faster than I can from a tape.

(When Jane speaks to me as Seth her delivery is slower than it is during a class session, for instance. [...] Moreover, I think the fact that such high-quality work is obtained this way says important things about these sessions.)

SESSION 610, JUNE 7, 1972
9:10 P.M. WEDNESDAY

Now: Ruburt need not worry that he has missed a few regular sessions. He has been exercising spontaneity, and paradoxically enough, it is upon spontaneity that the regularity of our sessions depends. [...]

[...] Usually, she said, she forgets any images, or even whether or not she has had any, unless I specifically ask at once when a session is over or at break. Sometimes, she said, the same images will return to her when she reads a particular session; she then recognizes them.)

[...] I told Jane she needn’t have a session, but she was willing enough, if Seth decided to. [...]

(Jane has had two recent, excellent and long sessions for her ESP class, however, featuring both Seth and Seth II, and including new material.)

[...] to finish my book, start up a definite dream schedule, that is, two or three scheduled long naps plus suggestions as I used to do for various kinds of out-of-bodies and dream states; a session a week as of now with the dream work perhaps making up for the second session we don’t have; and painting. [...] This was I think the first time I’ve seen Seth’s image that clearly; though once in a session I think I did.

I’m a great double-thinker; that is I vaguely recall some of Seth’s remarks in last night’s session about the heroic dimension and then I think: is this to be taken literally? [...]
