The small pillow he uses beneath his regular bed pillow.
This session should lead to a very important understanding on both of your parts. (Long pause.) I believe the small bed pillow used by Ruburt has a connection with your mother, and should not be used.
(I wasn’t sure whether Seth had said a red, or bed, pillow.)

Suddenly Jane began rocking her head and neck back and forth against the pillow quite violently, at the same time making a series of crying noises. Her left leg came up off the bed and pillow in tune with the head movements.

(When I got to 330 Jane was lying on her left side with a pillow under her left leg, as well as the sponge between her knees.

Then she discovered that she can now touch the pillow behind her left ear with her left hand—something she couldn’t do even a day or so ago.

It seems the folded pillow under her left leg acts as a handy fulcrum for leg movements, offering her some support and confidence when she starts moving. But when she lifts her foot off the bed, the leg is clear of the pillow support.
[...]
Then her head and shoulders began moving against the pillow and mattress.

(She lay back upon her bed and pillow, half crying at times, speaking with a choked voice often, and once again with a different rhythm — one broken by long pauses every few words, as yesterday.)
(Jane lay so quietly, eyes closed, head tipping toward her left on her pillow, mouth open, that I thought she’d fallen asleep.)

I feel that my sleep with the pillow, and my later reactions of soreness, mean that I’ve touched upon, again, those areas I’d forsaken for some time, and shoved away or whatever, and that the release of tension itself was bound to be somewhat explosive, I suppose.

You (to me) are also seeing what can happen when spontaneity is denied....The badminton or pillow-pounding allows for the expression of freedom, mobility and speed—the opportunity for it, and is therefore important.

Of the last few months or so I spent at my mother’s house—when she called me time after time during those spring and summer months of 1950: she wanted her pillows turned, she cried out in rage and pain—and here I was some 30 years later, calling out to Rob (voice breaking) to move my pillows or raise my head.

I imagined the different ways magazines like The National Enquirer could trick someone into giving an interview to start with, and turn people against each other, (Carol Burnett is suing that paper—the story was in the news lately.) From there some wild stuff that doesn’t make sense now, with strange things happening to my chair pillow as I sat on it....

He also said Jane should use suggestion to teach herself to sleep without a pillow.
[...]
When I remarked that I often woke up to notice that Jane was sleeping without a pillow, having pushed it aside in her sleep, Seth said this was an indication that her subconscious knew what it was doing. I sleep with a heavier pillow than Jane uses, and sometimes use two; Seth said my reasons were different than Jane’s and that in this case the pillows were not a hindrance.
(Seth used Jane’s pillow data to go on to explain that she had a habit of sleeping with her hands tensed, or sometimes clenched, and that this allowed tension to move up her arms, across her shoulders and into the upper back and neck.

I do suggest the pillow pounding, for it encourages the expression of normally aggressive feelings through bodily release, rather than repression through bodily tension.
[...]
It enjoys using its strength, so the pillow beating need not be necessarily tied in with the release of aggression alone, but can serve now simply as a way for the body to express its sensations.
