“Seth material” search engine (Jane Roberts)

^* In 1965, in response to my letter, an older and very respected parapsychologist — “Dr. Instream,” Jane called him — invited Jane and me to attend the hypnosis symposium he was to conduct at a New York State college. Doctors, dentists, and psychologists attended. It was there that Jane and I had our most unfortunate encounter with the young psychologist. See Chapters 6, 7, and 8 of The Seth Material.

[...] We could have told no one what was happening, we could have contacted a spiritualist group or we could have informed the parapsychologists. [...] But the ESP books we’d read all advised that anyone having such experiences contact a qualified psychologist or parapsychologist.

[...] So we decided to contact a parapsychologist who would have a knowledge of ESP and psychology.

Dr. Instream told us that the psychologist’s behavior was an example of the sort of performance that so upset parapsychologists. [...]

Dr. Instream explained the parapsychologists’ attitude toward the testing of ESP and suggested that Seth try clairvoyantly to perceive objects upon which the doctor would be concentrating. [...]

It was to some extent aggravated by books telling of the experience of various mediums, and by what he has read concerning the attitude of parapsychologists toward them. [...]

[...] Don’t be bothered that parapsychologists are not knocking at your doors. [...]

[...] These “guys” then will be doctors, parapsychologists, psychiatrists, and members of other scientific disciplines.

Such a book would do much to explain how the medium is led, wherever possible, to make those correct statements that add up to almost what your parapsychologists like to call a hit—for she is almost literally hit with them.

After making those points, however, I note with some amusement that I find it difficult indeed to believe that many millions of people must wait for a handful of their “superior” peers — philosophers, scientists, psychologists, parapsychologists — to tell them it’s all right to believe in at least a few of the inner abilities that each of us possesses, to whatever degree. [...] Physicists and parapsychologists have suggested various sorts of minute and undiscovered entities (mindons, psychons, psitrons, and so forth) that can move backward in time relative to our conscious conception of what time is, or that are at least free of our idea of a time that flows inevitably forward. (Seth made one short remark I would have liked to question him further on, to the effect that we would have plenty of go-arounds with “your parapsychologists.” [...]
