[...] Once again, quasars are quasi-stellar radio sources, presumably at the farthest reaches of our observable universe according to our instruments. They contradict our laws of physics, being many times too bright for their size and distance, and emitting much too much energy. [...]

Our friend is not at his best this evening, but we shall see what we can do.

I want to stress some points mentioned in our last session, to the effect in particular that you perceive only a small portion of any given action even when that action has some of its origins within your own physical field.

Even in our discussions we use the terms past, present and future, but I have told you that your future can influence your past, and that the spacious present is the only time reality.

[...] She had indeed, on impulse, visited Bob and Mary Piper, friends of ours whom we had not seen for many months. [...]

(At 11:00 this morning our lawyer called to tell me that Blue Cross has agreed to pay our insurance claim. [...]

[...] After the session I told Jane that he’d said more than he realized — that in the case of predictions it would be wise of us to remind ourselves that his sense of time is indeed far different than ours, that much more time could be involved on our parts than on his. [...]

[...] I think the good news may not have penetrated my psyche yet, not even as I type these lines at 9:00 p.m. After talking to our lawyer this morning I went back to work on Dreams just as though nothing had happened. [...]

(Several times this morning while we were working Jane mentioned that she was receiving flashes from Seth about a particular subject—the refrigerator in our bathroom. [...]

(Actually we have two refrigerators, and since our kitchen is very small we kept the smaller icebox there and the larger one in the bath. [...]

(She was also concerned because she thought her subconscious might be playing tricks on her, using the Seth approach to problems she or we should solve on our own. [...]

[...] This avoids entanglement of psychic energies, and I will go into the reasons for this during one of our regular sessions. [...]

(Our suspicions entered in, however, when Jane and I realized that between us [and including each other] we were personally acquainted with nine counterparts: All but one of them [Alan Koch] were class members. [...]

“We’re so used to thinking that our encounters with others are caused by chance — except for those we purposely bring about through choice, such as marriage partners — that Seth’s comments about my students seem a bit outrageous at first: So many counterparts in one room?

(My counterpart, Peter Smith, and I are both professional artists; we’re roughly of an age, with strong interests in other forms of creativity, such as writing, and in myth and fantasy.¹ A number of the similarities and differences between Jane and me should be obvious to our readers; she also does quite a lot of painting. [...] Peter and I had rather idly speculated that because of our common interests we could have reincarnational ties.² Seth’s naming Norma as being psychically affiliated with me was unexpected, however. [...]

[...] During our drive back to Elmira this morning Jane said, “Somebody’s working on Seth’s book, I can tell you that. [...]

[...] The safest thing to say would be that each session, even, adds to our knowledge of what a constantly expanding whole self can be. [...]

3. Here Seth quotes himself exactly from an unscheduled session held on February 26, 1972, during our vacation in Marathon, Florida.

[...] This morning I worked on the final copy of our 1983 taxes, and will mail them to our accountant Monday morning. [...]

[...] It was John Bumbalo, our neighbor who lives across the street from our hill house. [...]

(This morning I called our lawyer, and got the necessary confirmation on several matters — the $10,000 exemption limit on donations, and so forth. [...] He also asked for our copy of Reality Change, to copy for the file, and I added a copy of Maude’s letter also. [...]

[...] Just before she did, we were treated to the rather strong and tasty smell of liver and onions, coming up the elevator shaft across the hall from our door, from the kitchen in the basement. [...]

(I should add that our dear friends, Bill and Peg Gallagher, visited Jane rather late last night, and brought with them a bottle of wine which the three of them proceeded to drain. [...]

(This noon our friend Jim Beckett visited us for the first time in some months. [...] Last evening our TV set was acting up, and Jane wished aloud that Jim would visit us and fix the set, as he has done in the past.

[...] They were sitting no more than 30 feet away; our bedroom being at the back of our apartment, on the second floor.

[...] Today he told us that as he drove within about four blocks of our house, he received the strong urge to visit us.)

[...] You should take steps to realize the connection with your mother and red, so that our friend can use his red curtains at Christmas with immunity.

[...] Seth maintained that our situation would work to our advantage in this respect.

We started the Instream tests and our own envelope tests in August of 1965. [...]

[...] During their trip we would substitute this experiment for our envelope tests. [...]

[...] Our cat lover laughs [Seth’s nickname for Peg, who dislikes cats]. [...]

[...] In the event that Seth might do this, and also discuss our dreams, as he has mentioned doing by way of illustrating the material, I read to Jane just before the session began two very vivid dreams that I have had within the last two weeks, involving my father and other members of my family. [...] This is her first day home, and she has begun to paint our apartment by way of diversion.

I would like to continue our discussion concerning the layers of the so-called subconscious, in connection now with a study of dreams.

For out of a seemingly endless number of possibilities, our individual dreamer actually discriminates with great care, choosing only those dream objects or symbols that have meaning to him; and those dream objects that can best serve his purposes. [...]

(Jane and I were tired from our recent activities and might have missed the session, except that she didn’t want to interrupt the rhythm we’d built up. [...] All of us expected an easygoing session — one that might touch upon current events involving the three of us, from a very ill feline, say, to our impromptu Friday evening “reincarnational dramas.” [...]

(The session was being held in our living room. [...] Our long coffee table separated us. [...]

(11:20 P.M. Seth’s reference to reincarnational material of my own concerned the “reincarnational dramas” that Jane, Sue, myself and a few others have undertaken on our own, usually at our Friday night gatherings. [...]

[...] Sue Watkins, a member of Jane’s ESP class and our personal friend, has been very helpful; she has loaned me books on the period so that I could be sure of historical references.

[...] Our first impulse was not to acknowledge the sound, but since it was unusual we did so. It proved that a TV antenna had been loosened over our porch roof, and a repairman asked us for the loan of a flashlight. [...]

[...] For our part we want to know whether Dr. Instream understands that he was in York Beach on the same night a photo of York Beach was used in a session, or whether he remembers reading about York Beach in previous sessions.

(It was a very hot and humid night but we held the session in our small back room. [...]

This material will be most helpful in our own sessions, since when we are finished with it you will understand to some degree those conditions which may be advantageous and those which are not.

[...] Now to distort these by coloring them with lesser ideas, ideas incidentally that he did not have when we began our sessions, is unfortunate.

[...] In our own material usually, I can deal with matters more as I would prefer.

(Before this evening’s session I had said that publication of the Seth material could help many more people than Jane [called Ruburt by Seth] could help personally in her ESP classes, and that too much energy expended in the classes took away from that available for the theoretical material available to us in our regular twice-weekly sessions. [...]

[...] I prefer you see the vocabulary used in our sessions. [...]

Good evening to our friend. Now, to our fine young lady: you must watch the pictures that you paint with your imagination, for you allow your imagination too full a reign. If you read our early material, you will see that your environment and the conditions of your life at any given time are the direct result of your own expectations. [...]

[...] I will here repeat my earlier suggestion that our friend read my earlier material. [...]

For our guest: you should tell yourself frequently, “I will only react to constructive suggestions,” for this gives you some protection against your own negative thoughts and those of others. [...]

1. We called those three very penetrating sessions private, or deleted, because they grew out of our own reactions to David Yoder’s challenges, to the illness of our cat Billy, to the playful antics of Billy’s littermate Mitzi, and to several other personal matters. [...]

[...] He had much to say about how the out-of-place stresses we impose upon ourselves through our fearful projections into the future adversely affect our body consciousnesses, which are focused in the present. [...]

(On January 23 I mailed to our publisher Jane’s Introduction for Sue Watkins’s Conversations With Seth.

[...] We may indeed take time out shortly, not only to go into our own relationship more thoroughly, but also to discuss other such relationships in general. [...] His own book will allow him to reassess the nature of our sessions. It will do neither of you harm, and might do you both good, to discuss our sessions personally with some other persons whom you have mentioned.

We are largely over this hump now, and the actual writing of the book in its entirety will actually serve to strengthen his confidence in this respect, since the validity of our sessions will be stressed as he reads material for his book. At its completion he will be much more committed than he is now, and indeed our sessions will attain added depth through his acquiescence.

[...] In our later sessions for example, we have mentioned that the desire for duplication must always result in a distortion, but this distortion is also the basis therefore for a new reality.

[...] Unfortunately the knowledge that his book will be published, while bringing him much satisfaction, has also served to remind him of the manner in which he fears many might look upon both our sessions and his past endeavors in this field.

[...] Jane was vexed at herself here, for she realized now that when giving the familiar data, she was going to say something about a familiar location, meaning the location of our apartment as something familiar to us. Our address is on the letter used as object.

[...] It concerned the recent sale of a painting to him, made through our friend, Marie Colucci. [...]

[...] It easily rose above the considerable traffic noise coming through our open living room window.)

(And of course, this makes me think that our staying her at the Overseas Motel, in Marathon, is probably the poorest choice we—I—could have made. Our cottage here is within a hundred yards of the spot where we camped with Jane’s father in the late 1950’s. I would say now, without checking with Seth, that any thought of nostalgia we might have derived from returning here would have been better ignored. [...] Our stay hasn’t been too pleasant for a variety of reasons, including noisy neighbors, etc. We made one half-hearted attempt to get out a week ago, on our trip to Key West.)

[...] And if Jane had been aware of any negative influences here, if they exist, she would have prohibited our returning.... Perhaps our stay here did lead to this very important series of sessions, though; we are learning much from them.)
