(It was now 9:09. I had been glancing occasionally at the candle flame as I wrote. It burned within a foot of my left hand. The flame had now increased perhaps a quarter of an inch in height, and burned steadily at that level; this meant an increase from 3/4 of an inch to one inch.

(The session was held in our small back room. No windows were open, and by measurement I determined that the candle flame burned at a remarkably consistent 3/4-inch height. Jane began speaking while sitting down and with her eyes closed. Her pace was rather slow, with many pauses, yet her voice was somewhat stronger than usual. She sat much of the time with a hand raised to her face. She was not smoking. She began speaking at 9:01.)

(The candle flame had maintained its increased height very steadily until close to break time, when I thought it began to fluctuate a bit. At break I thought it was mainly at its original lower height. Jane could not see it, and did not ask about its behavior. We agreed not to mention it during sessions, no matter what took place. I had wondered if the increased height of the flame had resulted from the body of the candle “warming up,” since it was a thick one, perhaps five inches tall. When the flame subsided however at break, I did not know what to think, and decided to merely record what I saw without being concerned.

(This bit of data was also given to Peggy on Friday, December 3, during the unscheduled session preceding her Washington trip. By now, also, I saw that the candle flame had climbed back up to its one-inch height; it continued to burn steadily at that height. Jane’s voice had lost its heavier edge.)

(The candle flame had begun to subside about ten minutes ago, and was now down to about a 3/4-inch height, from its estimated high of two inches earlier in the session. [...]

[...] The candle flame, now, attained its highest point of the evening; it was well over an estimated two inches in height, rising up to such a height that a thin trail of black smoke escaped from it. [...] The candle is a large one, with a diameter of at least two inches and with very little taper. [...]

[...] Rather quickly, the flame reached up to a height beneath its maximum for the session, which was well over an estimated two inches. its growth now was quite respectable however, perhaps to something just under two inches. [...]

[...] As soon as I lit the candle the flame soared up to a height that was easily two inches, and remained there without interruption for about twenty minutes. [...]

[...] Suddenly Jane began to lift her entire left leg again—an inch—then two inches—off the mattress. [...] Then she raised the foot three inches off the bed, flexing the foot at the same time at the ankle. [...]

[...] Before long she had her left foot and leg raised up a couple of inches off the bed. [...]

[...] While I worked on mail her left foot came up again—a good three inches this time, as she grunted and her head moved against the pillow. [...]

[...] The branch, which is perhaps ten feet long and three or four inches in diameter, came crashing down to the street. [...]

[...] The fall was very fine and light, and several inches had accumulated. [...]

(We have a lovely quiet Xmas—Gallaghers here Xmas Eve—four inches or so of snow, Joe and Margaret here last PM—pleasant—I give Rob his planter thing; we get the bed. [...]

[...] Last night when I helped her off it onto the bed, we discovered that she had soaked the cushion under her bottom for an area eight inches or so around—something she hadn’t done before. [...]

(This metal sculpture, an estimated ten inches across its widest diameter, actually appears quite a bit smaller than the more round or circular ceramic sculpture at a foot across. [...]

(Perhaps two or three inches of snow fell this afternoon; now I’ll probably shovel for a while in the driveway. [...]

[...] However, we’ve been extremely pleased to see that in the last couple of days her legs have acquired a good deal more movement at the knees: her toes spanned a distance from front to back of a good six inches as she swung her legs back and forth. [...]

A million to an inch.

[...] I still use the visionary technique I came up with when these sessions started: I envision a large sponge with which I go over her entire body, every inch of it, and soak up all the stiffness and pain and immobility. [...]

(Now, while Jane still sat with her left wrist pressed to the table, her hand, turning white in part again, rose several inches [perhaps three by my estimate] up from the table. [...]

(There was no doubt that we saw an image in the mirror that sat several inches lower than Jane herself sat, and that the mysterious head would dip down and then hang forward [...]

[...] My estimate is that the third, resisting leg, was perhaps an inch or two off the floor. [...]

[...] So much force was used to shatter the table leg that a nail two and a quarter inches long, that I had used in my previous repair bout, was bent at an exact right angle. [...]

[...] We agreed on the location of the Crimson King red maple in the back yard; Frank is to plant it tomorrow afternoon, and bring the young fellow with him to mow the grass, which is some six inches high. [...]
