Suggestions such as I have given you are meaningless if any improvement is faced by an attitude that says “Such a minute improvement is meaningless,” or “This has happened before, and gone nowhere”—and so I wanted those attitudes completely routed out. [...] They should be applied with the idea of helping Ruburt to improve.

[...] When Ruburt does not feel ashamed to meet guests, it will seem to him that this is because he is so physically improved. Actually the improvements follow and are the physical materialization of his responsiveness to himself, and to the natural world.

Saying this, I do not want to make you impatient with Ruburt’s progress, for he is naturally improving. He can do more than naturally improve, however, if you understand what I am saying, and does not confuse the rules of the two frameworks. [...]

Now: Had Ruburt gone to a doctor or a faith healer when we began our last group of sessions, and then in a matter of a week or so found himself able again to walk with his [typing] table across the kitchen floor, some thirteen or fourteen steps perhaps, where before three were his uncomfortable limit, he might have attributed the improvement to a doctor’s treatment or to a faith healer’s ability — but he would have been impressed. Those improvements came about in their way magically, because he has begun to use and understand this material. [...]

There is no doubt that improvements have occurred in Ruburt’s condition. You would have to be blind not to realize that his ankles and feet, his hands and wrists, his neck and jaw, have all improved. [...]

[...] Had you both trusted the body, had you believed that it did indeed improve to improve, then Ruburt would have been more aware of the new balancing sensations and positions, and would not have added anxiety on top.

As probabilities operate in each moment of your life there are minute improvements in Ruburt’s condition, and minute backslidings; pulsations, really, of reactions. Now if you concentrate upon the improvements with this understanding that facts grow from that creativity, then you begin to structure your attention in the line of those improvements, minute as they appear. He also felt that you reacted to his improvement by feeling threatened yourself, that you disapproved of it. [...]

Ruburt read it, and is reading it, looking for those feelings that allowed vast improvements to occur at the time—and for once he did not look into the past with his usual self-disapproval. [...]

If Ruburt is showing improvements, then let these rise to your attention. [...]

(I haven’t done so, but I imagine that if I charted the days when her reading was markedly better, a definite pattern of improvements would show. The same sort of pattern of improvement must be operating with the body as a whole, then, I speculated. [...]
