(This morning I was dressed to go to Joe Bumbalo’s funeral by 9:15. I didn’t feel like hanging around the house until 9:45 — the service was at 10:00 — so I told Margaret Bumbalo I’d run down to the hospital to see Jane first, then walk over. Jane was better, surprised to see me, trying to decide whether to go to hydro [she didn’t].

(August 7, 1984. Patty called me at noon and said Jane wanted me to come to 330 early if I could. I finished a sandwich and went down. She was doing fairly well by then, but had had a very rough morning. She’d gone to hydro, and hadn’t fared too well: new people, students, had helped position her, and hadn’t done it right. Jane said she’d had a much better night than usual, though.

(I was pretty quiet today, mostly because I felt tired and didn’t know what else to do to try to get her to eat or be more open about physical motion. So I said nothing, feeling very frustrated. Jane ate little lunch, though she said she did better with breakfast. I decided to stop saying anything about either hydro or her eating, since it appeared to have no effect.

[...] She’s only been taking Darvoset at about 5:30 AM, and before she goes down to hydro later in the morning—distinct improvements, I told her. [...]

[...] She told me that when she gets the Darvoset before hydro, “they mix it up with my aspirin, into a terrible concoction.” [...]

[...] “I tried to do a little bit of that bicycle thing when I was in hydro this morning,” Jane said. [...]

[...] Jane told me that in hydro this morning she’d felt new movement in her right leg—the broken one—that it both tried to move more, and to straighten out more. [...]

He is right: the leg did move better this morning as he lay on the litter after hydro. [...]

[...] She explained a bit later that she’d been upset—and blue afterward—about going to hydro this morning. [...]

[...] She said she didn’t try to do much in hydro because of the water: “I guess that’s just the way different people do it.” [...]

(I was surprised to learn that she had considered not telling me about her morning’s episode that brought on the blues: hydro. [...]

(Jane went to hydro this morning. [...]

(After I’d had a nap Jane remembered to tell me that this morning, after hydro, she’d had an “experience” in which she’d seen herself baking a cake in the kitchen at 1730 Pinnacle, putting it in the oven, and so forth. [...]

[...] No hydro today or tomorrow. [...]

[...] She did well this morning in hydro—moving her feet more than usual, she said—and she ate an excellent lunch. [...]

[...] Oh—and I did move my feet a little more than usual in hydro—both of them....” [...]

(On May 28, a nurse in hydro dropped an empty pan on Jane’s left instep, making one of those depression cuts in the flesh. [...] This morning, Georgia and another aide banged Jane’s right shin hard against the metal frame of the stretcher they put my wife on to take her to hydro. [...]

[...] Changing dressings these days is much easier, and she does better in hydro. No one in hydro has noticed any change in her motions, she said. [...]

Hydro:

[...] Jane went to hydro this morning. [...]

[...] Jane had been to hydro this morning. [...]

[...] She said it was even more pronounced in hydro, when she lays flat and has room for the arms to reach farther down. [...]

(Jane said she had a long wait for hydro this morning. [...] She saw her doctor briefly in hydro.

[...] In hydro, the therapist, Wendy, who checks both Jane and her chart weekly, told her that she was doing well, that the knee was coming along great. Terry, who puts Jane through the hydro bath, told her she looks well and was easier to move. [...]

[...] I thought she’d told me earlier that the incident had taken place in hydro. [...]

(Jane was okay, although she said she’d had another long wait before and after hydro. [...] Jane got blue over the hydro situation, the waiting, new people lifting her and not knowing how, etc. [...]

(Jane told me that this morning in hydro her right leg “opened up quite a bit” as she lay on the litter. [...]

(Then Jane told me that in hydro Gail Greene said that one of the ulcers on her back was starting to bleed a bit—another good sign, since the bleeding is a sign of healing. [...]

[...] She had a good night and morning, with some new motions in hydro. [...]

[...] She said her legs worked well in hydro this morning. [...]

[...] The staff had been very busy, and so had hydro.

^* Hydro, as staff members call it, is short for the hospital’s hydrotherapy department. [...]

(This morning in hydro the sole of her right foot had stung in the same manner. [...]

[...] This is when she remembered having the same feelings in hydro this morning. [...]

[...] She hadn’t had any aspirin or Darvoset since before going to hydro, and was now quite willing to get some aspirin as soon as the lunch tray arrived with some milk. [...]

[...] They’ve been taken out of hydro for a couple of months. [...]

(Jane didn’t go to hydro this morning, since the tank broke down. I did meet Steve, the attendant who takes care of her in hydro. [...]

[...] She went down to hydro this morning but never got into the tank; it malfunctioned and she was finally brought back to 330 where Georgia gave her a partial bath.

[...] She’d gone to hydro this morning, and had her catheter changed at about 11:00 when it wouldn’t irrigate any more. [...]
