[...] The lady told Peg and Bill a good deal about the workings of Dr. Rhine’s department; and how, now that he is past 70, the mandatory college retirement age, arrangements have been made for him to continue his work in parapsychology through a foundation which is apparently connected to or with the college.

[...] Seth told Bill that he took his problems with him on vacation, especially the ulcer, and Bill heartily agreed. [...] Bill showed us his Japanese “tranquilizer,” a small black wooden carving he had bought in Puerto Rico.

(In the following passages Seth hit his high point as far as feeling and emphasis are concerned. At times his delivery became passionate. [...]

[...] The Jesuit sent the information he picked up from this woman telepathically, about the character and nature of Dr. Rhine and his foundation.

[...] This is returning sensation, interpreted as sore on his part but not on the body’s. Again, that is transitory. The legs are entering their final stages of adequate-enough recovery, so that the walking can be far smoother and his posture erect. He must reinforce his faith in the process as he does.

[...] Normal legs do not —they change with each step, and his are beginning now to move as they should.

Personally then he took upon himself what you would say perhaps were great problems—too great for the personality to handle, but his inner tendencies for self-mutilation always kept his vision true to his main image of the world.

Your own great problem, the inhibition of emotion, fits in with your own designs as well as his did. He was not ever satisfied with his work and had far less satisfaction in general from his fellow beings than you have.

His “success” (in quotes) was no success to him. [...]

In Joseph’s dream, his brother’s features had an Oriental cast. Joseph knew that his brother lived as himself, and also as an Oriental, unknown to Joseph in his present life. If Joseph had seen two people — one his brother and one an Oriental — he would not have recognized the stranger, so in the dream his brother’s known appearance dominated, while the Oriental affiliation is merely suggested. [...]

[...] His parents, known to be dead, were there. [...] The brother was definitely himself, yet somehow altered in appearance, his features having an Oriental cast. [...]

[...] As you’ll see, he managed to do both, winding a discussion of my dream into his own material about the psyche.)

[...] It would be easy to think that the dream foresaw Joseph’s own death, and that of his brother and sister-in-law. [...]

A man who makes shoes may see his customers, but he will not know what roads his customers walk in his shoes—and you cannot know the mental and psychic changes for the better that the books are making in parents and their children. [...]

[...] It follows his natural rhythms. The fear of not producing, however, can inhibit his productivity, and wear him out with worry.

[...] If Ruburt’s main goals in work, for example, had directly involved and mainly concerned immediate contact with others, through university work or whatever, his mobility would not have been tampered with.

(A note: Seth’s material reminded me of his comments in the deleted 371st session for October 11, 1967. [...]

[...] To do so he must change his own reality, alter his feeling of relationship with himself, and between himself and others. His physical situation—the symptoms—are public to the extent that others know he has difficulties. [...]

When Ruburt has such dreams, his muscles and joints react in sleep, mimicking normal actions—and he well might be sorer than usual upon awakening, because in sleep, at such times, now, without the weight of his body, standing and so forth, the muscles and joints will make motions of a releasing nature quite painlessly in the dream state. [...]

Let us look at his painting. [...] He forgets his ease, and the same thing applies to “trying to get better.”

[...] The dreams show your activity in Framework 2 —and again, may I recommend on Ruburt’s part some sense of creativity in his physical situation? [...] For his point-of-power exercises have him just playfully for five minutes pretend—knowing that it is a game—that he feels perfectly normal and relaxed. [...]

His personality structure is different, and he has other qualities to counteract against the obsessive tendencies inherited from his mother. [...] Because of the lesson his peaks of achievement will be higher, and his overall physical condition instantly will show improvement.

[...] In Ruburt’s case the conditions mentioned earlier, in our last sessions, operate to his best advantage. Every effort should be made to maintain them, for they will bring about the highest conditions of maturity possible for his personality structure.

[...] These are simply his peculiar psychological necessities. [...] It does mean that his overall identity will not stand for a protracted period when concentration is not primarily focused within this work framework.

[...] It is because I knew the conditions that his own system demanded.

Last night, as I began typing Monday’s 915th session, I asked Jane why Seth hadn’t just called his “invisible particles” CU’s, or units of consciousness, as he’d done earlier in Dreams,² and as he’d always done in his other books. [...] In order to help Jane feel better, I speculated that he must have had his reasons for doing this, and that of course a certain amount of repetition is necessary in each book in a series: The restatements not only furnish a foundation for new material, but enable each book to be complete in itself. [...]

10:01 P.M. Near the close of Monday evening’s session, Seth had given us an insight into the nature of his own reality. [...] His statement is particularly intriguing because Seth indicated that in his nonphysical reality, “wherever that is,” he’s still developing, just as we are “here on earth.” [...]

Then, as we waited for a delayed session, Jane received material from Seth in which he very nicely explained his use of “invisible particles” on Monday evening—and since tonight he goes into his reasons for doing so, there’s no need to give them here. [...]

2. Here are the sessions and notes for Volume 1 of Dreams, in which Seth and I discussed or referred to his EE (or electromagnetic energy) units, and his CU’s (or units of consciousness).

He felt himself to be a portion of the storm, however, and felt the storm as a vast magnification of his own emotional reality—even as he felt the body of the earth itself to be, beside itself, the magnification of his own emotional reality and that of others.

[...] His mind is logical rather than intuitive. [...] You do not have to think before you cross the floor—where there Ruburt is aware of the slightest detail—the arrangement of his body or the furniture, the lay of the floor.

[...] Man could exult in nature’s energy, power, and splendor, even in the midst of the most fierce storm —in which, indeed, his life might be in danger.

[...] He still sensed nature’s grandeur—(louder:) but that grandeur was no longer his own, and he felt less and less a part of it. [...]

[...] You met your brother there—Dick—(who visited us last Monday, 11/24/75, with his wife, Ida) where his momentary understanding and illumination allowed him to appear. (On his visit Dick told us he has embarked upon the practice of transcendental meditation recently.) You saw also an Oriental version because his daughter (Teresa), who was also connected to him in an Oriental existence, was about to bear a male child.

[...] There is importance, significance in your suggestion that Ruburt send energy to his body, and in your suggestion that he look for the library, as there is in his new attraction to his painting.

[...] Only his physical condition connected his reality with the known one. [...]

Ruburt is acutely sensitive then to your own inner purposes and questions about the universe, as you are to his, and these propel you jointly into areas most difficult to travel otherwise.

[...] This was his last reincarnation. [...]

[...] He came back under his own free will to teach you. [...]

[...] Marriage and children for his own nature. [...]

[...] She was his wife in the past life, when he died at 32. [...]

[...] When he feels financially threatened, however, that is when he pulls in his horns, cuts down on creativity, and tries to do his “job.’’

While he worries sometimes about future money, or how he will make out, generally speaking he can handle that, and knows that left alone his creativity will, and is, producing financial as well as other results. [...]

The tax episode threw Ruburt into a quandary—not only because of the situation, but because you, he felt, felt so threatened that there was no joy in his royalty check. [...]

[...] His request that you surprise him with buying him clothes is an unconscious attempt to get you to express some financial exuberance, or trust.

[...] No one would ever think of calling him lazy or good for nothing, yet this may be precisely his own subconscious picture of himself, against which he drives himself incessantly, all in an effort to prove that his erroneous self-image is, indeed, wrong. And all without realizing his basic concept of himself and without recognizing the fact that he projects it outward onto others.

[...] If individual A is in a period of despondency, then this is because he has already become prey to negative suggestions of his own and others. If now you see him and think that he looks miserable—or that he is an incurable drunk—then indeed these suggestions are picked up by him subconsciously though you have not spoken a word, and in his already weakened condition, they will be accepted and acted upon.

If, on the other hand, thinking of him under the same conditions, you stop yourself and say gently to yourself: he will begin to feel better now—or his drinking is temporary—and there is indeed hope here, then you have given him aid, for the suggestions will at least represent some small telepathic ammunition to fight off the war of despondency.

[...] You must learn to listen to the voice of your inner self, for if you know the use you are to this man, you do not recognize the nature of his use to you.

Now: Had Ruburt gone to a doctor or a faith healer when we began our last group of sessions, and then in a matter of a week or so found himself able again to walk with his [typing] table across the kitchen floor, some thirteen or fourteen steps perhaps, where before three were his uncomfortable limit, he might have attributed the improvement to a doctor’s treatment or to a faith healer’s ability — but he would have been impressed. He would have been impressed also with the greater obvious motion of his feet, the feelings of release in the legs now spreading to the back and shoulders.

(Pause.) Man serves his purposes within nature, as all species do, and in the terms of your understanding man “thinks” in his own way, but he is also the thinking portion of nature. [...]

[...] It is not nearly as easy to see that the same applies to man and his mental and physical environment, his town or country or culture, but the infant trusts from the very first moment.

[...] So let him be just as impressed — in fact, more impressed — at the body’s natural healing processes, that will naturally flow and are naturally flowing when he allows himself to trust his life and the support of his own being.

[...] He can do far better, and the way to begin is to allow the spontaneous self as much freedom as he can in daily life, and to trust its expression—that it knows his psychic and creative needs, his physical needs, his social and financial needs, and all of these can be taken care of.

[...] I’m referring at the moment to his comments about her embarrassment, in the early days, at earning more money than I did [see the deleted session for April 16, 1979, page 97], and that in later years the symptoms served to provide us with a sense of separation from the world, for a number of reasons [see the deleted session for April 18]. Seth has already touched upon such questions in the deleted sessions that follow, especially those for April 30 and May 2, and extends his coverage of them this evening in response to my latest queries. [...]

[...] In fact—in fact—his body can heal itself overnight. [...]

[...] The symptoms served to slow him down psychically, while he mentally considered his position.

The advice I recently gave must particularly be followed — so that he concentrates upon the joys that he possesses, keeps his goals in mind, and trusts the infinite intelligence within him to bring about the desired results. This frees his mind and allows his improvements to continue without interruption.

[...] I told Jane I suspected the dream grew out of my meeting Leonard at the new Super-Duper market the other night, when he’d joked around and repeated several times how good he felt physically, after his heart operation. [...]

It is because Ruburt now has more vitality that he sometimes becomes quite impatient with his progress.

[...] (Long pause.) His food is doing him more and more good. [...]

[...] You look at him on some (underlined) occasions—far less than in the past—with great impatience and disapproval, as far as his physical condition is concerned, so that he feels he would have greater dignity alone on his knees than trying to walk with you with that look in your eyes.

[...] His freedom, earned, has been bringing results financially and creatively in work areas. It has resulted in a greater freedom in our sessions because the two of you together discussed your conscious beliefs about sessions, and Ruburt learned that many of his previous beliefs here were limited.

[...] Seth spent the first portion of the session dictating on Chapter 3 of his book, The Nature of Personal Reality.)

[...] Now Ruburt until recently has had the same sort of belief concerning his body and its abilities. [...]

[...] He also should be encouraged to feel his energy, and rouse it. [...] The more exciting it can be made the better, for this alone will rouse his enthusiasm.

[...] His imagination can be given full rein, except that when he find himself using it negatively, he uses it as strongly in the opposite direction instead.

[...] To be angry at himself for not doing his yoga, say, today can outdo the benefits of having done them earlier.

As he is feeding himself now, have him think of his thoughts as nourishment, so that he feeds himself constructive nourishing thoughts. [...]

The individual’s ability to receive these impressions of which we have been speaking, and his ability to translate them and to construct them, is all determined by his own personal psychic background in past existences and in the present one, and by his own inner conception of himself, the physical universe, his place in it, and by his inner reactions to ideas.

[...] Psychic gates are closed by parents and fences set up around the self, closing out many important possibilities of growth and fulfillment; these barriers must be broken; as man’s conception of himself enlarges so will his actual capabilities and possibilities be extended. His psychic limitations are largely self-adopted.

(At the exact time the session was due Monday, Jane, Del, Midge and I were visiting our landlord and his wife on their farm in Pine City. [...]

I might mention that Ruburt handled the situation with his father’s mistress in a much more intelligent fashion than he would have, if it were not for the insight he has gained as a result of these sessions.

[...] The dream world was his original learning ground. [...] That is, his dreaming allowed him to clairvoyantly view the body of land. [...] In dreams his consciousness operated as a wave.

[...] Never before, in your terms, has the private person been able to see a picture of the mass world in such a way, or been forced to identify with the policies of his or her government. That in itself is a creative achievement, and means that man is not closing his eyes to the inequities of his world.
