[...] The night before last, then, I told Jane about my idea of asking Seth to comment upon early photographs of her parents, Marie and Delmer,¹ to see what would develop in the material.

[...] If you find a line of development that you now wish you had pursued, but had not, then think deeply about the ways in which those activities could now fit into the framework of your officially accepted life.² Such musings, with desire — backed up by common sense — can bring about intersection points in probabilities that cause a fresh realignment of the deep elements of the psyche. [...] Through understanding your own unknown reality, therefore, you can learn much about the unknown reality of the species.

[...] That species has as many offshoots and developments as you have privately. [...]

“The magical approach takes it for granted, in the simplest terms, that the life of any individual will fulfill itself, will develop and mature, that the environment and the individual are uniquely suited and work together. [...] Those ingrained beliefs are of course biologically pertinent, providing the impetus of all growth and development.

I’m certainly not writing here about the idea of redemption in the ordinary religious sense, although I think it’s perfectly possible that in some other frameworks, larger than our taken-for-granted physical and psychological one, the idea of redemption—of understanding and embracing—may be involved in a “religious” sense, as part of an intuitive grasp of All That Is.

[...] Yet, on second thought I wouldn’t dare rule out completely such bizarre developments. [...]

All of this reminds me that lately the media have carried a number of stories detailing how medical science is not only trying hard to approach cures for scourges like cancer (in cancer’s case, possibly through the exploration and understanding of the role played in the cell nucleus by altered normal cells called oncogenes), but is already claiming to have narrowed down its search to specific genes that affect imponderables like behavior—depression, for example. [...]

[...] However, they represent incipient latent developments that may or may not occur in physical reality. [...]

[...] The overall intentions and characteristics of the personality will determine the quality of perception and understanding. [...]

According to the abilities and understanding of the projectionist, however, more thorough messages can be given, and it may be quite obvious that the Speakers are indeed only symbols of greater identities. [...]

[...] The whole self, the soul, knows of its reality in all such systems, and you, as a part of it, are working toward the same state of self-awareness and development.

This is the material without which no deep understanding could ever be achieved. It marks the first important step in your development and understanding, and I will give you an A.

[...] In your physical field value fulfillment consists of the development of the ability of the immaterial to express itself within the physical field.

Let me tell you that only now, with this material, will we really begin our leap into real understanding of things as they are. [...]

You deal then with a single-line type of within-physical-time development, and tend to ignore the value fulfillment kind of development which is entirely independent of a time structure. [...]

[...] He has an innate talent for making money, that has not been developed nor used for these reasons; and all suggestions made by him to you have been regarded by you as threats, and he felt that the suggestions were mistakes on his part. [...]

[...] I am saying be cautious, for while certain periods of time seem necessary within your system for the development of your work, that the ideas of limited time on a daily or weekly basis can slow down the intuitional qualities of your work and growth.

Ideas and use of the inner senses can form a shaft of understanding through camouflage pattern, by which you will receive a dismally small burst of light; but even that is extremely important.

[...] It necessarily also narrows your concentration and your understanding. [...]

Also in the long run your salesman’s ability, which was partially developed in another life, would play you false under the circumstances which you contemplate. [...]

A definite strain therefore developed, particularly painful since it involved his work also, to which he has always been strongly committed. [...]

The soul is too great to know itself, yet each individual portion of the soul seeks this knowledge and in the seeking creates new possibilities of development, new dimensions of actuality. [...]

I can only hope to evoke some feeling within you that is reminiscent of your own actual behavior at those hidden levels of dreaming activity, but they have remained highly pertinent in the development of all species with their environments, keeping the intents and purposes of one alive in the other. [...] We did manage at least to hint of some material that almost exists on the edge—the very edge—of any rational understanding. [...]

(Pause.) You had some time ago an old newspaper article you had saved, on the dangers of using the words “should” or “would” too often—and there is perhaps nothing else you could do that is as detrimental to the true development of the natural self. Part of the difficulty in what Ruburt thinks of as the development of his abilities, or the more frequent insertion of inspirational work of his own, is the very fact that he feels so responsible to so thusly perform. [...] They bring you enjoyment, fulfillment, understanding, excitement, discovery. [...]

[...] (Pause.) He would see to it that as many persons as possible had the opportunity to see a session, and he would furthermore also be developing his own psychic experience at a far greater rate. [...]

It is also true however that this lack of boundary allows for possibilities of development and expansion that would be impossible with a limited self. [...]

[...] Each self is interwound with all others, and yet each self, being composed of action, has within it the powers of action toward change, development, expansion, and the drive toward fulfillment.

[...] Action develops according to value fulfillment, and value fulfillment has little to do with size or numbers; and action turns to consciousness. [...]

The ego is indeed a necessity within the physical field at this point of man’s development. [...]

That translation would be bound to be distortive, and yet it would be the only kind of perception or understanding that would be possible under the circumstances.

[...] Knowing them at this point will not help your development. [...]

[...] They have their own in quotes “reasoning processes” of which you are little aware, since at your point of development you use the intellect as a rule in its place, and make a clear distinction between the two areas.

[...] Now this information is helpful to your development, and we shall continue to discuss it, for you can to some degree, with my aid, understand how this emotional intellect works if you try to understand the material intuitively, use your imagination with it, and try to feel it out.

[...] Until his own understanding of his nature and the nature of consciousness progressed, he needed those tactics.

[...] Now much of this would have frightened you both in the past, and could not have been given until you reached a particular point of development, and achieved a new status both separately and in your relationship.

[...] To link the “great masters” with our species’ reincarnational intents and drives, as Seth mentions in this session, opens up a new field for understanding my question, and a very large and intriguing one indeed.

[...] Ideas of virtue, spareness and artistic single attentiveness as opposed to the idea of extravagance, the scattering of energies, or pleasure as a tempting disruptive force; all such beliefs are suddenly shaken up in a new bag, so to speak, so that you can distinguish between them with some new understanding. [...] It does represent a rather significant probable development. [...]

(The session subject matter was quite unexpected by me, though Jane had had plenty of intimations beforehand, it developed, without telling me. [...]

You are yourself to be quite commended for your behavior and your understanding. [...] The emotions are like musical notes: the more of them you can play the richer your composition (with emphasis)—and your understanding, even when it is not fully conscious, has helped release the range of those emotional characteristics. [...]

[...] And once again, as we waited I thought that I was the one who’d initiated events this evening, whereas I had trouble understanding why Jane didn’t do more of that herself. [...]

[...] Otherwise, he said, ulcers could develop there also. [...]

[...] Only in this existence is there finally some understanding, and a growing sense of responsibility. [...] Therefore, they did not fully develop and the personality was at a standstill. [...]

You are at a particular point in your existence and it is a time for you to learn and to develop. [...]

For some time you have all been searching, and I hope to show you how to ask the proper questions; for in the questions you will find the answers, and in the answers you shall be yourselves; and knowing yourselves fulfill your purpose and expand the limitations of your own consciousness until you can search out the past and the present and see yourselves as you are, and know that you are more than you think you are, and fulfill those abilities which you have partially developed in past lives. I keep returning to natural analogies — but plants do not work at developing their potential. [...] When you are so serious, you almost always distort the nature of your own spirit as far as your understanding of it is concerned. [...]

[...] Yet there is a great correlation between what you think of as creativity, altered states of consciousness, play, and “spiritual” development.

[...] Physically, play develops their body mechanisms. [...]

[...] Spiritual development becomes a goal that must be attained. [...]

(This afternoon while I was out doing errands, Jane had a rather strong if not lengthy experience that seemed to encompass an emotional understanding of Seth’s material in the last session [for Monday]. [...]

[...] Again, the material on responsibility is important to your understanding. [...]

[...] Read this session with the last one—but read the last group together so you can see the development of ideas. [...]
