When the race began physical focus it learned to behave in a more or less permanent-appearing environment, and so it developed a suitable self that also appeared to be permanent enough for a time within that world.

[...] Individually, however, in those terms he is well ahead of the species’ development.

Eleanor, who professed such greater literary understanding and appreciation for Dialogues, in her turn refused it as well, and also Rich Bed. Ruburt never thought Tam had any great understanding of poetry; but what good did Eleanor’s “superior” appreciation do if the book was refused after such compliments?

The exercise is an exercise in understanding and perceiving the reality of other people without misrepresenting them because of your own inner distortions. The exercise is in understanding others.

[...] It also realizes the experiences open to it that would otherwise be unavailable, and it can now itself grow in understanding and development, and as a willing and able protector, but not a jealous one.

The process could or could not have developed, according to the probabilities and the circumstances. [...] Ruburt’s ego would have avoided the questions and taken the easy road, and this easy road would not have developed the full potentials that were necessary if the personality were to use its creative and intuitional abilities in any important manner.

[...] This endeavor, involving you both so deeply, all also lead you toward the full development of your own abilities. [...]

[...] The intuitive self presented the ego however with a new line of development that it was not prepared to follow.

(9:50.) Give us a moment… You were born with the impetus toward growth built in — automatically provided with the inner blueprints that would lead to a developed adult form. Not only the cells, but the atoms and molecules that compose them contained a positive intent to cooperate in a bodily formation, to fulfill themselves, and they were then predisposed not only toward survival, but with an idealization leading toward the best possible development and maturity.

[...] The soul, in other words, has created a world for you to inhabit, to change — a complete sphere of activity in which new developments and indeed new forms of consciousness can emerge.

The karate image for him is a good one, far more evocative, intuitive, and powerful than his idea say of doing exercises, for it combines, for him, intuitive understanding with physical strength and agility.

[...] So already in his mind he is gaining weight, seeing himself fairly agile—but he felt this was in spite of your attitudes, not with your enthusiasm or understanding.

He could quite happily accept your early rising but he felt that you poked fun at him when he spoke of working at night or rising early—again not understanding how he could utilize extremes.

[...] But there are psychic blueprints,⁷ so to speak, wherein each identity knows of its “history”; and taking any given line of development, projects that history. The potential of such an identity is far greater, however, than can ever be expressed through any physical one-line kind of development (forcefully).

(Jane’s material on strands of consciousness² had actually developed because of my experience involving my father while I was in an altered state of consciousness. [...]

Joseph recently had an experience that disturbed him, simply because it was difficult to interpret even in the light of his understanding about the nature of the self. [...]

His experience appeared to imply that his father’s identity had so much mobility, and so many possibilities for development, that the very idea of identity seemed to lose its boundaries.⁴
