In your realm of reality, mistakes are a part of the learning process. They do not even seem to be mistakes until you are “at the next level” of development, or a step higher in your understanding—as when, say, in the sixth grade you looked back and saw a page of your own childish lettering done at the age of five.

These were all stages of development, then, and the same applies to your life. Your so-called mistakes exist as mistakes only in the light of your aspirations to perform better, to express more fully developed experiences, rather than to write better sentences.

It is self-defeating, therefore, to blame yourself for mistakes, so-called, simply because in the light of your present development they are seen as less-developed acts than those to which you now aspire. Whenever you catch yourself disapproving of yourself for past mistakes, read these passages. Do not check on yourself all the time. Trust that you will learn what you want to learn as automatically as you once learned to read or speak, or as automatically as you think.

Ruburt is coming to new understanding that is definitely changing the health pattern. [...] Our session, the August 2 one, helped lead him to that understanding.

[...] Seth Two didn’t come through, but some very interesting effects developed later in the session. [...]

[...] Often, therefore, instances of unusual genetic differences may also serve to bring out qualities of understanding, sympathy, and empathy on the part of family members — and those qualities also are vital to human development. [...]

In actuality all of the seemingly erratic genetic variances that often crop up in human development are vital to the elasticity of the entire genetic system.

There is hardly any danger of that possibility, however, since it would be nearly impossible to perform such a task even with the most developed of technologies — and indeed, the very attempt to do so might well immediately trigger a response on the part of the whole genetic system, so that new divergences appeared with even greater frequency, as compensation.

(11:22.) Such a development would, however, necessitate first of all a broadening of concepts about the self, and a greater understanding of human potential. Human consciousness is now at a stage where such a development is not only feasible, but necessary if the race is to achieve its greatest fulfillment.

[...] She was led to develop her own, therefore, and this book is an extension of certain ideas already mentioned in Adventures in Consciousness.³ To write that book, Jane Roberts drew on deep resources of energy.

[...] (Long pause.) Historically speaking, mankind chose a certain line of development. [...]

[...] This has nothing to do with so-called psychic phenomena, but the natural growth and development of a personality whenever it tries to go beyond its space and time context, and takes a challenge of such a nature.

[...] Often a situation of unbalance is set up that would not exist had the personality not accepted the challenges and hence the potentials for an even greater development.

[...] These methods may seem to lead to great distortions, particularly in contrast with the sensed possibilities of development. [...]

[...] (Pause.) Legitimately, each personality is a co-creator, and part of All That Is, but this All That Is constantly develops, and develops in terms of growth fulfillment.

They will be fully developed best, easiest, in dealing with this material and through his poetry. [...] He will work out the best way of doing this, for it will be a natural development, an alchemy, resulting from the nature of his own writing talents, which are considerable, his own intuitions, and the material. [...]

[...] The exercises which Ruburt is barely beginning will be of great help in our work, and in the development of his abilities. [...]

[...] Any inner journeys should allow you to find greater significance, beauty, and meaning in life as you know it now; but full enjoyment and development also means that you use all of your abilities, that you explore inner dimensions with as much wonder and enthusiasm. With proper understanding, therefore, it is quite possible for you to become quite familiar now with after-death landscapes and environments and experiences. [...]

[...] Now you may hallucinate the same sort of thing after death, use it for a symbol, and undergo a spiritual battle of sorts that would, of course, not be necessary had you more understanding. You will work out your ideas, problems or dilemmas at your own level of understanding.

[...] This is simply because in your present state of development you are not able to manipulate consciously within more than one environment.

[...] The individual’s impetus is toward growth, development and understanding. [...]

[...] You fear abandonment for that reason, since you are meant to develop individually while also interacting with others, that interaction giving you the peculiar quality of established civilizations. [...]

[...] Our material, and his own abilities, represented various kinds of trials, development and growth, and also implied various kinds of threats of different strengths throughout the years. [...]

[...] These provide both a psychic and social framework for personal growth, understanding, and development. [...] It is easy to claim an equal love for all members of the species, but love itself requires an understanding that at your level of activity is based upon intimate experience. [...]

[...] This would not be a blanket love, a soupy porridge of a glance in which individuality melted, but a love based on a full understanding of each individual. The emotion of love brings you closest to an understanding of the nature of All That Is. [...]

[...] Instead, the words “domination” and “submission” have to do with areas of consciousness and its development. [...]

Now: the new policy of writing down Ruburt’s feelings is beginning to pay off, and is leading him to an understanding of the feelings, to a recognition of his impulses. And toward some understanding as to why some impulses have been largely buried in the past, and why others, while recognized, were denied a hearing.

(“Despite the beliefs and teachings of religion and psychology, impulses are biological and psychic directional signals, meant to nudge the individual toward his/her greatest opportunities for expression and development privately—and also to insure the person’s contribution to mass social reality.”

(We sat for the session to see if it would develop after all.)

The point I want to make is that the opportunity for development and knowledge is as present at this moment, in this life, as it will ever be. If you ignore day-by-day opportunities for development now, no one can force you to accept and utilize greater abilities after death, or between lives. [...]

[...] You may have brought negative influences into your life for a given reason, but the reason always has to do with understanding, and understanding removes those influences.

[...] As mentioned earlier, many personalities adopt different kinds of experiences, focusing upon development in certain specific areas, and ignoring others perhaps for a series of lives.

It will therefore return once more to the same plane with which it was familiar, where it will meet with new challenges, and develop new abilities that will, however, be of the same basic nature; that is, if we are speaking of your plane, the ego would have new experiences, develop new abilities, perhaps solve old problems, balance out deficiencies, but still be dealing with problems of manipulation and physical construction.

Each existence in any of many camouflage patterns trains and fulfills the inner self to develop the greatest possible fulfillment of its own qualities and characteristics. [...]

[...] It, that is it meaning the outer ego, can even continue growth and development after a particular existence, according to its inherent ability and according to its ability to communicate with the basic inner self.

[...] He has not been using his full abilities but he is now learning that he must do so if he is to develop, and if he is to do his best by you, for you are my students, you see, as well as his. [...]

[...] You exist in more dimensions than you know and your own reality transcends your own understanding and intellect. [...]

[...] In one sense you are not divided or separated and you will gain from his added development for he will telepathically let you understand matters that you have never understood before. [...]

[...] The difficulty would lie in the drain upon his time, for people would want readings: and again, look for miracles rather than self-understanding and self-development.

Even his desolations, of which I know, lead him to continue a search for understanding, and serve as an impetus to further development. [...]

[...] Understand that individuals themselves between lives choose the time of their own birth, adopting ahead of time those characteristics that they feel will best aid their development, and challenge their abilities.

(At times Jane wakes me up at night; she’s very nearly crying in discomfort, yet now we understand that those feelings represent her muscles wanting to be used; so far, though, we haven’t managed to get ourselves out of bed at such times, which usually develop perhaps an hour before the alarm is to ring; these bouts, then, happen after she’s usually slept for several hours, and the body wants action. [...]

[...] Seth said that when the body began to recover, it would be an overall development. [...]

[...] It is the overly developed, exaggerated, “unnatural” need for safety. [...]

[...] The matter of time is highly important if you have any hopes of understanding the self in its entirety, or other personalities that do not operate within your system. [...]

[...] For his own development therefore he needed to face this on his own and conquer it. Otherwise he would never be able to look upon the sick with a compassionate or understanding eye.

Your development as an artist however, given your particular abilities and personality, was not possible in your early years. The qualities for which you shall become known will be somewhat the result of your psychic development also. [...]

[...] Jane told me that at times she felt a distinct yearning for understanding by the others involved in the affair; yet, because of her participation in it, her confidence in knowing what she can do was strengthened significantly. [...]

(To conclude the whole episode I’d like to illuminate, from two additional angles, Jane’s feelings and concerns about needing the understanding of others:

(I think that because of the very nature of the abilities she’s chosen to develop in this life, Jane will always find such manipulations necessary. [...]

You are each at the point of new comprehensions and understanding.

[...] I will give you hints of further developments, and you will have hints of your own. [...]

[...] Ruburt then used and enjoyed his spontaneity, and has been developing it along the lines of his understanding. [...]

The words “Let thy will be done,” represented excellent psychological understanding, for according to Christ’s teachings as originally given, God the father represented the source or parent of the self, who was by nature free from the self’s ignorance or lack of understanding at any given time, and who would know better than the known self those experiences that would fulfill the self’s hopes, dreams, and potentials.

[...] That vitality allows for different readings, of course, and through man’s changing development he reads his myths differently, yet they serve as containers for intuitional knowledge.
