(We expected Seth to speak tonight, and to deal with material Jane and I had been discussing just before session time. [...] Seth plunged in, in a most animated way, without preliminary greeting. [...]

(This refers to the book on the Seth material that Jane has now begun.)

[...] Jane did not respond, sitting quietly, so after a short pause I said good night to Seth on the assumption that the session was over. But she then resumed as Seth.)

(“Yes, Seth.”)

5. Jane has worked with Tam ever since he encouraged her to write The Seth Material 13 years ago; that book was published a year later, in 1970. [...] As a result, Jane and I have arranged that upon our deaths our estate—including the Seth material—goes to the Manuscripts and Archives division of the Library. My plan in the meantime has been to transfer copies of as much of our work as possible to Manuscripts and Archives, so that the material can be indexed and made available to researchers and to the public. [...]

I can’t note the same for The Magical Approach to Reality: A Seth Book—the very promising work that Jane and I first discussed a year and a half ago [in August 1980], after Seth had started his group of excellent private sessions on that subject.⁸ I watched Jane try to write the book a number of times; last month, in Note 6 for Session 939 [in this chapter], I finally expressed the opinion that she wouldn’t finish the job. [...] I think Magical Approach would have been a fine book as she planned it—but that it ended up squelched by at least two major factors: She was too inhibited by the subject matter [her physical symptoms] out of which the magical approach material had grown, and she was bothered because she had chosen to emulate the plodding way in which I put together the Seth books. [...]

[...] These include the thousands of pages of the Seth material, regular and deleted [or private]; Jane’s and my own journals and other miscellaneous manuscripts, written records, and notes; ESP class tapes; some of Jane’s poetry and art, and some photographs of each of us. [...]

[...] Once again, I refer the reader to Seth’s excellent material on violence as quoted in Note 2 for Session 933.

[...] As this information — the Seth material — is sifted through Ruburt’s experience, you are able to see how it applies to the existence that is “presently” yours.

(Sessions 760-61 were devoted to separate topics that Seth has been developing apart from his regular book dictation for Psyche.

[...] I think all of this psychic stuff that I’m half aware of has to be organized and expressed in our world — Seth, Cézanne, this book — so that we can make sense of the whole thing.”

[...] Since Seth discusses this himself in the session, I’ll let him carry on from here.)

(We haven’t talked a great deal about the probable ramifications inherent in the whole house episode — rather, we expected such concepts to operate if the Seth material has any validity. [...] Neither of us believes in chance or coincidence in usual terms, for instance — nor have we since Seth began discussing the elements behind such qualities some years ago. [...]

[...] “I was really out — he could have kept me under for four hours …” She explained that just before the session began she’d received glimmerings of the material to come, but hadn’t had time to tell me about it. Certainly neither of us bad expected Seth to go into the affair involving the two houses in Sayre.

[...] As we had requested that he do just before the session, Seth directed his final delivery to some other material for Jane and me. [...]

[...] We haven’t asked Seth what to do, and do not plan to. There are more “coincidences” involved than those Seth described tonight, none of them consciously known to Jane and me before the Sayre adventure: Mr. Markle is in a nursing home but a few miles from where we live in Elmira, and my mother spent her last days in a similar home less than 15 miles away; one of Mr. Markle’s children lives in Elmira, and is connected with a store Jane and I have visited; Mr. Johnson, of the real estate couple that conducted us about in Sayre, did sign painting and truck lettering as a younger man, as I did; he and I had several mutual acquaintances in Sayre, among them an older artist of some reputation — and now deceased — that we had known in our high school days; and so forth.

[...] I told her at the end of the day that the Seth material is an excellent example of her own direct cognition; this obvious description had come to me after I worked with Seth’s material on direct cognition in Chapter 6 of Dreams. [...]

If you remember, it took a while for The Seth Material, with Prentice, to do well. [...]

It will take longer then for the general public than it did, for example, with The Seth Material hardcover, for several reasons.

[...] And she replied that she could already feel the emotions connected with the Seth material today. [...]

[...] Jane’s Seth voice was stronger than usual. [...]

[...] Tell Ruburt I will begin book dictation again at our next session, including the material on “better and better pills.”

(Many people have written or called us to ask about Seth’s unpublished data on Christ, Biblical events and times, but practically all such material has either been published verbatim or referred to. See Chapter Eighteen of The Seth Material besides Seth Speaks and this book.

(In a private session on September 3, Seth discussed some of the reasons behind Jerusalem’s unceasing fascination for certain segments of mankind. [...] Then in the next session — which concerned other subjects — Seth unexpectedly added this aside: “You can have more material on Jerusalem or Christ now, or when you want it. [...]

As I mentioned in Seth Speaks, the Christ entity was too great to be contained in any one man, or for that matter in any one time, so the man you think of as Christ was not crucified (See chapters Twenty-one and Twenty-two of Seth Speaks.)

(Jane’s question arose out of material in the 560th session in Chapter Fourteen: She wanted to know the name of the third personality making up the three-part Christ entity that Seth has postulated. [In Chapter Eighteen of Jane’s own book, The Seth Material, Seth gave as members of this entity Christ, of course, and John the Baptist.] I told Jane now that I thought Seth intended to go into this whole matter much more thoroughly later in this book.

(9:41.) What he sees, however, is still physical, the objects of the material world. [...] Into his inner mind come pictures or symbols of material objects, people or events, from perhaps the past as well as present and future imaginings, the joy now being expressed with greater freedom mentally, but with symbols.

[...] I wanted to be sure that the material given on the Speakers, so far, adequately dealt with the methods by which they were able to contact others in both the waking and dream states. [...]

(“So am I, Seth, but you know I was busy. [...]

[...] In this one Seth for the first time mentioned that Jane should work full time at her writing. [...] This move was not dictated wholly by the Seth material, but certainly this played its part. [...]

[...] Remember thinking suddenly that Seth might say the following in tonight’s session: Material world of physical matter doesn’t actually exist as such at all, in a real sense. [...]

(By 8:55 PM Jane had no idea of the material for the session tonight, nor was she nervous.

[...] When she lay down for a nap yesterday afternoon she picked up from Seth hints of subjects he’s going to discuss in Dreams: “man migrations,” and “inside and outside cues” as pertaining to man’s consciousness. She hopes Seth will go into that material tonight. [...]

[...] After giving the material I’ve excerpted for Note 1, Seth said good night at 10:30 P.M.)

[...] It wasn’t until Jane began coming through with the ideas embodied in the Seth material that I began to question my “need” for glasses. [...]

[...] On that day Tam Mossman of Prentice-Hall called Sue Watkins to ask her permission to publish Conversations With Seth in two volumes; Sue’s account of Jane’s ESP classes is now too long for a single book. [...]

(During the break Jane read over parts of Chapter Eighteen of The Seth Material, then announced that she thought there was a contradiction, between that material — originally from the 491st session on July 2, 1969 — on the three Christs, and the information given by Seth this evening. [...]

[...] Then I remembered that Seth hadn’t given headings for the first eight chapters of his book. [...] Could he give the headings now, or would Jane have to go over that early material first? [...]

(Jane preferred that Seth simply start in where he had left off on the chapter — a feat I was sure he was quite capable of. [...] She was strongly interested in seeing that Seth finished his book, although she still has to read most of it.

(There followed a short exchange between Seth and me, which isn’t recorded verbatim because it was too rapid. [...] Jane, as Seth, listened politely to my groping questions.)

(A Note added later: Sessions between the one above and the one below contain no Seth Material, but are instead sessions in which Jane received book-length and world-view material on the artist Rembrandt. [...]

The session had been an impromptu one, and developed on our last night in Marathon because we’d been worrying about our goals in life, and how significant a part the Seth material might play in our affairs. [...] The Seth Material had been published in mid-1970, but sales were slow, and Seth Speaks wasn’t out yet; we’d just finished correcting the page proofs for that work. [...]

[...] For in it Seth not only discussed the body’s natural defenses and how it “immunizes itself,” but also examined our negative cultural beliefs about the body and disease. We think his material is so good that it deserves more than one reading.

1. When Seth came through with “You get what you concentrate upon,” I remembered that he’d first spoken that sentence some years ago — and that soon afterward I’d made a little paper sign bearing those words and taped it to a wall in one of the two apartments we occupied in Elmira, New York. [...] From our records I learned that I’d taken Seth’s quotation from a personal session Jane held while we were on vacation in Marathon, a resort community in the Florida Keys.

(“Very good material.”)

(I can offer a connection, but cannot verify it with Seth until next session. After this session I remembered that the Wilburs are reading what we call Book One of the Seth material. [...] My introductory notes contain a reference to Jane and me borrowing a Ouija board from our landlord “in the fall of 1963,” which compares with the date given by Seth this evening, of September 10,1963. [...]

[...] Presumably Seth refers to the writings she has sent out recently. Her publisher, F. Fell, has written expressing interest in her book on the Seth material and on the poetry book described in the 232nd session, page 269. [...] Seth said the article would sell.

(Seth goes over the envelope results with us to some extent this evening, and answers a few questions pertaining to such experiments. First however there follows the connections Jane and I made with the envelope object, and Seth’s data on page 306.

[...] We wanted to make up for the Dr. Instream experiment we missed on Monday, however, so before tonight’s session we mentioned aloud that we hoped Seth would deal with this.

[...] Small portions of three of them contain Seth material for herself.

[...] We’ve been quite discouraged at times lately, yet Seth has had a different story to tell. Our struggle, our challenge, and one that’s most difficult for us, is to understand his material as much as possible.

[...] After expressing a couple of reassuring thoughts for Jane, in line with his private material for Monday night’s session, Seth said good night at 10:15 P.M. “Listen, I came so close to not having this session,” Jane said. [...]

On October 30 Sue Watkins called to tell us that she’s finished writing Volume 2 of Conversations With Seth. [...]

[...] It was easy to tell that Jane was happy working on Seth’s latest. [...] She’s been picking up from Seth on Dreams quite often. [...] At other times she may forget to mention it for a while, or the session material itself may remind her that she already knew what Seth was going to talk about.)

3. Now what, I wondered, as I typed this session from my notes, does Seth mean here, and in the paragraph above? [...] His material usually generates more questions than answers, but this time he’d outdone himself. I try to avoid reading too much into such brief passages, but I felt that if Seth answered all of the questions I could ask based upon this session, a book would result. [...] (I could also see correlations here between Seth’s ideas about the primary nature of All That Is and the inflationary model of the universe. [...]

[...] Keep in mind that according to the Seth material the merest particle is basically conscious in its own way. [...]

At this point in my speculations I’m usually led back to Seth’s EE (or electromagnetic energy) units, and his CU’s (or units of consciousness). [...] According to Seth, each unit of consciousness “contains within itself innately infinite properties of expansion, development and organization; yet within itself always maintains the kernel of its own individuality…. [...]

(“In these passages on hate, and elsewhere in this book, Seth goes more deeply into the nature of our emotional life than he has before. [...] One such instance is mentioned on page 248 of The Seth Material, when, in response to a declaration by a student in my ESP class, Seth took the conventional idea of hate for granted on the part of the student. [...] Seth’s main concern was to refute that concept.

(A note added later: After comparing the information in this session with some of Seth’s material of previous years, Jane wrote a statement for insertion here:

(“In using the word ‘curse,’ Seth is not referring to swearing, but to directing hatred against another. [...] Also important in this context is Seth’s frequent reminder that the expression of normal aggression prevents the buildup of anger into hatred.”)

[...] (Jane, as Seth, patted her midriff.) The remark was meant symbolically. [...]

[...] Bill has been acting as custodian of the second carbon of the Seth material. Jane and I have always made it a policy to have a carbon of any written material—prose, poetry, etc., in separate hands outside of our house, as a protection against loss by accident, fire, etc.

(We had not asked that Bill follow the material from session to session, feeling that it was for him to decide whether to pay any attention to it or not. Jane and I were therefore pleasantly surprised to learn that Bill and Ida had read some of the material; and while not hostile to it, they still expressed a healthy skepticism—an attitude Jane and I much prefer to any gullible, overenthusiastic belief blindly undertaken.

(Ida’s brother, Louie, had also been following the material somewhat more thoroughly, and he visited the four of us at Bill’s home Saturday night. [...]

[...] Nevertheless, I did feel a legitimate welcome in advance; and since I feel already as if I know very well two of the present gathering, and since furthermore we have dealt with them in our material, I am more than willing to greet both of them personally.

[...] He seemed to be so taken with the Seth material that he’d stopped reading everything else, he said, yet when I said he shouldn’t do that, he said he read widely of other material — that sort of thing. [...]

[...] It made me wonder, as I drove home, what some people did before they came across the Seth material, or my own thinking. [...]
