“Seth material” search engine (Jane Roberts)

(I’d been commenting on her call tonight to a psychiatrist—Dr. Beahrs—who’d written her recently from Washington state, and of his informing her that another doctor out there is also using the Seth material ideas in dealing with her patients. [...] Yet, I added, the fact that the two medical people had discovered Seth was, in a small way, a sign that the material had at least managed some sort of transcendent movement. [...]

(Then in today’s mail Jane received a letter from another doctor, as well as from a professor of mathematics – also signs that the Seth material was capable of wider appeal. [...] Then Jane dictated the words quoted above, saying Seth would probably cover them in tonight’s session. [...]

(It’s my hunch that Seth’s New Year’s resolutions are perhaps the most potent material we could get, provided we keep them in mind as time passes. [...]

[...] This would be a sign of the spontaneous change Seth mentioned in a late session. [...]

[...] “If we’d had any inkling of what we were getting into with the Seth material, I’d never have done it,” Jane said. She meant that she wouldn’t have become associated with “the cheap psychic field,” not that she’d have given up working with the Seth material. [...] I asked her just how one could go about speaking for a personality like Seth, yet remain aloof from all of the psychic playing going on around us. [...]

(Sometimes I become a bit puzzled as I prepare Seth’s material for publication. [...] I do not like to change Seth’s information, and almost always avoid doing so.)

[...] She told me that Seth had changed the beginning of the session because of her reactions to the mail this noon, but that finally he’d gotten into some of the material she’d picked up from him today, and written down. Seth hadn’t covered her notes about caveman art, however; she’d especially looked forward to his comments on that subject.

[...] But there are many ramifications here, and it’s obvious that studying the Seth material is hardly the only way to explore reality. [...]

(Jane said she had been working quite happily on the book dealing with the Seth material, and on one about dreams. When she got the burst of energy on the poetry book idea however, she took advantage of it, and felt certain the material would be published. [...]

[...] In the early sessions he exhibited some drastic behavior at Seth’s presence and/or arrival. At times he would attempt to entangle himself in Jane’s legs as she paced about the room while speaking for Seth. [...] Seth told us this was because the cat’s very acute senses detected his arrival on our plane. [...]

[...] Jane began speaking while sitting down and with her eyes closed; her eyes then began to open frequently after a few paragraphs of material. [...]

[...] “The Seth Material will be published, and you’ll help the world — it’s too much! [...] And Malba didn’t sound terribly bright; at least Seth is intelligent and knows what he’s talking about. [...] This way I’m trying to figure out if Seth is independent or not … [and] worrying about a Malba, too.”

[...] For one thing, I distrusted the “prediction” that the Seth Material would be published.

[...] Rob told me later that he was squirming some, as I paced back and forth, delivering this material as Seth.

Following Seth’s suggestions, Rob began doing a few simple yoga exercises, and the night before the eighteenth session he used self-hypnosis to relax his muscles. [...] Seth began to comment on this in the beginning of the next session. [...]

[...] At the same time, Tam Mossman, Jane’s editor at Prentice-Hall, is trying to find out whether the Dutch edition of Seth Speaks has been published. [...] The German-language edition of Seth Speaks was published in Switzerland four months ago [in May], and just three weeks ago we received our first fan letter from that country. [...] We expect the same kind of response from those who will seek out the Dutch Seth Speaks. We know the mail from European readers will very gradually increase, just as it did after Jane published The Seth Material in the United States in 1970.)

Later in these notes I also plan to include, as a partial answer to many who have written us on the subject, material Seth gave on animal consciousness; this information came through just three days ago, in the 878th session for September 10. In the meantime I want to tie together Dreams and the last Seth-Jane book, The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events. Seth completed his work on Mass Events about a month ago [on August 15], and a week later I began finishing my notes for it. [...]

(Seth actually began his Preface for this book, Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment, with the next, 881st session, which Jane delivered for him 12 days later [on September 25]. I chose to present this private session first because in it Seth offers certain information about Jane and me that I think applies to all of our work with him, through the session and books, and to our own separate creative lives as well. Especially do I like to interpret his material tonight as meaning that Jane is “a psychic or a mystic,” for to me, at least, this means that in this physical life she’s chosen to penetrate as deeply as she can the depths of reality, or consciousness.

[...] At the same time she’s been extremely inspired and creative recently, working on her own God of Jane and the Introduction for Seth’s Mass Events, turning out many pages of excellent material for those works. [...] In fact, after supper she produced two more pages of notes that she “picked up” from Seth on his new book Dreams, “Evolution,” and Value Fulfillment.

[...] He came across The Seth Material, saw similarities in Jane’s and his experiences, and came here to see if she or Seth could explain the phenomenon. There are points of correlation, of course, only Jane is presented not with just a voice but with an entire personality, Seth, who then writes books while she is in an altered state of consciousness. So she and Dick were highly interested in what Seth would say.

(Note that Seth endorsed Jane’s theory of Aspects. [...] In it she will explore — among other things — the nature, validity, and sources of such personalities as Seth, and the “intrusion” of intuitional or revelatory material. [...]

[...] Dick had also visited us in late August, when Seth had Chapter One of this book under way.

[...] Dick recorded it and is to send us a transcript, so later we’ll be able to add a few excerpts from that material to this session.

[...] On page 24 Seth stated that when Jane receives images, the psychological framework between Seth and Jane is operating; in these instances Seth is not giving Jane envelope data by way of concepts, directly and telepathically. [...]

Some of our readers, sending us recent books and copies of articles written by scientists working on these subjects, have noted that it must be nice for Jane and me to have concepts that Seth has been discussing for years “corroborated” by the establishment (often we already had the material on file, by the way). But once again irony enters in on my part, for I’m afraid our answer is that in general science isn’t even aware of the existence of the Seth material, notwithstanding the letters of approval and/or encouragement we receive from individual scientists, representing a variety of disciplines. [...] As I wrote to a fan just last week: “No matter what he or she may think of it personally, no reputable scientist is going to publicly espouse a belief in the Seth material. [...]

Some day, for our own amusement—but hardly with the idea of convincing others, let alone influential scientists—I’ll ask Seth to comment upon whatever connections may exist between his ideas and those embedded in quantum mechanics. [...] I think that Jane has little (if any) interest in whether any connections might exist between the Seth material and the mathematical theory of quantum mechanics. [...]

[...] Additionally, Jane could have chosen the present relationship to eventually help her temper her reception of and reaction to the Seth material, making her extra-cautious; this, even though she’d seen to it ahead of time that she would be born with that certain combination of fortitude and innocence necessary for her to press on with her chosen abilities. [...] And Jane’s resolve, her will that, according to Seth, “is amazingly strong” (in Volume 2 of “Unknown” Reality, see the 713th session for October 21, 1974), may buttress the understanding and determination of one or more of her counterparts in this life; she may meet (or have met) such an individual; another may live across an ocean, say, with no meeting ever to take place in physical terms.

I’ve written these passages knowing, of course, that many of Seth’s points and our own are at best theories, if very intriguing ones. [...] Whatever their status, Jane and I take heart from the letters sent us by many thousands of readers, who have time and again explained how they put the Seth material to use in very positive physical and mental ways. [...]

2 After the session I wanted to tie in Seth’s material on infinity with mathematical ideas of that concept, but my reading soon convinced me that such an idea was too involved a task for a simple note like this. However, I told Jane, in his own way Seth had incorporated mathematical ideas in his material: I saw correlations between his probable realities, his intervals, and the concept of an infinite number of points on a line—and that some mathematical definitions of infinity are considered to be more basic, or of a greater order, than others. Actually, in various branches of mathematics, from the works of Euclid (the Greek mathematician who flourished around 300 B.C.) to modern information theory, I found many relationships with Seth’s ideas. I do think that Seth’s material on the “origin” of our universe can be termed an “ideal point,” embracing our mathematical systems, and that his concept of All That Is has no “limits” in mathematical terms. [...]

[...] She recalled that back in her 20s—some 15 years before she initiated the Seth material—she’d written a series of poems about our species returning to the earth from space. “And here’s Seth saying that it’s actually happened that way—at least in some probable realities,” she said. [...]

[...] Yet when Seth came through his material certainly sounded like book work to me.)

(During her mid-morning exercise-and-rest break today, I asked Jane if she had any idea why Seth had come through with the material he’d given us in last Monday evening’s session. [...] Then: “Well, I don’t tell you everything, but for some time now I’ve known Seth gives what I call ‘fill-in’ sessions, or ‘floating material’— stuff he could give any time. [...] They’re like ‘maintenance sessions.’ It’s good material, all right, but. [...]

[...] [Checking later, I found that she’d given me the same answer about certain Seth material in Mass Events.]

[...] There are certain sessions I’ve labelled ‘fill-in’ sessions in my mind for some time now, or thought of them as covering ‘floating material.’ They aren’t book sessions or specifically personal ones. [...] Like maintenance sessions, but usually by discussing past material — connecting it with the present [‘connective sessions’ is more like it] — while not necessarily adding new thrust. [...]

(“I think such connective sessions happen between book sessions, for a change of pace — where material doesn’t have to fit a more concentrated overall book focus. [...]

[...] So far, Seth has explained six of these. (Several years later, Jane was to list nine such inner senses in Chapter 19 of The Seth Material.) Jane said that upon coming slowly awake from her nap she’d had the very peculiar feeling of ‘growing larger.’ The laughing phrase she used was that she’d felt as ‘big as an elephant.’ Her boundaries of awareness seemed to have expanded. [...]

[...] Her first massive sensations in March [estimated], 1962, were followed by these phenomena in 1963: our York Beach experiences in August; her reception of Idea Construction in September; her massive feelings in October [estimated]; the outline she produced for ESP Power [or The Coming of Seth] as a result of the Idea Construction adventure; and the beginning of these sessions in November, through our trying certain experiments listed in that outline [as Jane explains in Chapter 1 of The Seth Material]. [...]

(In my notes preceding the 39th session for March 30, 1964, I described the first massive state Jane experienced after beginning the Seth sessions. That material contains passages that are of special interest here, and I’ve combined them in these excerpts:)

(In that 39th session, Seth confirmed that Jane had been experimenting with one of the inner senses. [...]

3. One of the most unique out-of-body experiences, or projections, I’ve had was much like that which Seth describes here. It took place in April 1971, and I wrote about it in Chapter 20 of Seth Speaks. See the notes for the 583rd session. My consciousness didn’t travel more than 10 feet from my body that time, but the little journey, so vivid and pleasant, did much to reinforce the enlarged view of reality that I’d gradually begun to adopt after Jane started delivering the Seth material late in 1963. [...]

[...] Seth began describing the inner senses early in 1964. [...] Jane devoted Chapter 19 of The Seth Material to the inner senses.

A note: Just as he periodically reminds us of his material-to-come on physical aging and out-of-body states (see Note 4, above), Seth mentions that there are more inner senses he’ll tell us about someday — then adds that many of them are so far removed from reality as we understand it that our comprehension will be intellectual at best; in such cases we won’t be able to identify with them emotionally. And then other groups of inner senses, Seth continues, are truly “beyond verbalization.”

As her psychic abilities began to rapidly grow, following her initiation of the Seth material late in 1963, Jane couldn’t help but become more and more concerned about consciously enlarging her “scope of identity.” [...] Very understandable, then, that Jane, both for herself and for Seth, would write so eloquently about the disparity between her psychic abilities and “the currently scientifically-oriented blend of rationalism,” as Seth describes that quality earlier in this Session Six for The Magical Approach.

[...] In some ways the Seth material has been given credit by the establishment; being taught as university course work, for example. [...]

[...] As she researched Jane’s published and unpublished notes, journals, and books for The Magical Approach, Laurel learned that my wife had originally intended to call this book The Magical Approach: A Jane/Seth Book, and wrote of it as being “a psychic-naturalistic journal.” If Jane had planned to add to Seth’s original sessions, what might she have included? [...] Laurel pointed out a number of forceful passages Jane wrote on cultural acceptance in The God of Jane in 1980 — the same year in which she dictated The Magical Approach for Seth. [...]

[...] I have absolute faith that Seth and Jane Roberts, as well as Rob, know how I mean that with all my heart.

For one year, twice a week, Seth gave his impressions as to Dr. Instream’s activities. [...] Dr. Instream wanted Seth to concentrate on naming a particular object, though, upon which he would be concentrating in the distant town in which he lived. [...] Seth did give material pertaining to objects also, but he was more apt to give specific information on Dr. Instream’s daily life.

For the next eleven months, the Seth sessions dealt mainly with test data of one kind or another. At 9 P.M. as usual, Seth would begin with the theoretical material in which we were increasingly interested. [...]

[...] We went over the material with the Gallaghers on their return. [...] Seth had correctly described a nightclub they’d visited, then went on to mention that there had been a “nuisance there.” [...] Seth also said that there were eighteen shrubs out in front of the nightclub, but Bill had to admit that though there were shrubs out front, he hadn’t thought of counting them.

Now we could concentrate on the Seth Material. [...] If I’d had more faith in Seth’s abilities and my own, I could have saved myself a lot of trouble. [...]

[...] The messages represent (pause) philosophies and ideas (pause) that the Seth material and his work will change. The dream is personal and yet more than this, these messages and philosophies will be buried not only by the material but by psychic awareness on the part of many individuals like yourselves.

(This is the type of data my question had intended Seth to give—information of a more general application to many. Seth has also given Sue and Carl some reincarnational personal data in an ESP-class session.)

[...] Jane had delivered the above material almost without pause. Her trance had been good, and she remembered little of the material.

(Sue Watkins told us that before Seth began answering my question, her unborn child had been very active—kicking, etc, within her. When Seth started to consider the question, the fetus became very quiet, Sue said, almost as though listening ...)

[...] At this point, the Seth sessions themselves had only been going on for a month and a half. We had had no instances of clairvoyance or any evidential material except for that provided in the early séance, and we had both decided that we weren’t ready to try anything like that again for some time.

[...] “The Seth material could be coming from some deep inner source, an intuitive bank of inner knowledge available to everyone if they only look for it,” I said. [...]

I was really quite tired, yet after the session, I was astonished to discover that Seth had dictated an excellent exposition on the physical senses and had begun a description of the inner ones. [...] Seth began by speaking about the physical senses.

Had I been using Seth’s “inner senses” in the Bronson experience? [...]

(Before the session we discussed the one séance we’ve ever tried, and which is described in Chapter 3 of The Seth Material. I said that the spectacular results obtained had seemed to come straight out of Framework 2. We also discussed the long essay on early man in Time for November 7, and I remarked that I’d like to ask Seth some questions about the state of our present “knowledge” about our heritage.

(Jane had no special questions, beyond saying she hoped Seth would continue with material on Frameworks 1 and 2. She was very relaxed, and expressed qualifications about having s session; she did want to try, though.

[...] That portion is taken into consideration, along with the same portion of all other dreams, so that the raw material for future events is processed. [...]

(Seth did give much unexpected material about the brain — and about his own reality, incidentally — but the session turned out to be so long and closely interrelated that I found it very difficult to excerpt; most of the portions I picked out were left hanging, or were too incomplete. Naturally, Seth said what he said from his own viewpoint. I ended up choosing the few quotations gathered together here just to indicate the direction of the information, while hoping that the entire session, with others promised on the subject by Seth, will be published some day.

(Even if beta waves, then, seem to be the “official pulses” of our civilization [to use Seth’s phrase from a session that will be quoted in part below], still Jane and I wonder: When aren’t we actually in a state of altered consciousness? [...] But more than this, why not call all actions of the brain “altered” when compared to Seth’s concept of the individual personality’s whole self or entity?¹

[...] Nor at this time, given the minimum premise that Jane’s speaking for Seth constitutes any indication of “paranormal” activity, do we think that her performance could be identified as such per se on the graphs of her brain waves. [...] Presumably, however, when speaking for Seth, Jane would show definite changes in all frequency areas in both hemispheres, with the theta and delta ranges altered the most. [...]
