[...] We didn’t think so. Next we speculated about squirrels, since there are plenty of them living in the woods out back—yet the sounds didn’t seem quite right for one or more of those creatures, either. [...]

My ever-present concern for Jane would certainly have turned into outright fear had I seen at once the long, untitled poem she wrote on August 26, concurrently with her work on the second chapter for Magical Approach. She didn’t put the poem into its final form, and she didn’t show it to me. [...]

[...] When she began writing Magical Approach, she even surprised me by occasionally helping me get breakfast, cooking bacon and eggs at the hot plate I’d set up for her some seven months ago on the kitchen table.⁴ Although she could work at the table while sitting down, she’d given up those simple, nurturing acts of food preparation many weeks ago; her fingers weren’t working well enough, she told me at the time; she didn’t trust herself enough to handle hot food—and I admit that when she implied a risk, the chance of an accident, I stopped encouraging her to help me with meals.

[...] One very unusual way these showed themselves began on the evening of October 31, when four younger people who had been members of ESP class visited us from New York City.⁸ They’d been scouting the Elmira area for other ex-students, to see if any of them had old class tapes of Jane speaking for Seth and/or singing in Sumari; they had had some success in their searches, but we didn’t play any of the tapes that night.⁹

(1. How would Jane’s books do in the marketplace if Seth’s books didn’t exist?

[...] When he became nervous he didn’t breathe properly. [...]

[...] After the session, I realized that I should have asked Seth one question at least: to comment on Jane’s Dialogues—why that didn’t sell well.

[...] I didn’t ask that she or Seth comment on the notes, but at least I’d made it possible for either one to do so. [...]

[...] At the same time she’d acted very uncomfortable, often sitting ramrod straight as she spoke for Seth; however, she didn’t remember any of that behavior now. [...]

[...] She made some good points, but I didn’t agree on others. [...]

(Today, however, she didn’t do the notes. [...]

[...] Jane didn’t know, though I didn’t think she was. [...]

[...] An understandable-enough resolution, I said, and one I couldn’t argue with basically, since such a course could logically be the one chosen by some personalities—but it was also one that I didn’t choose at this time. [...]

[...] “The funny thing is, I believe it now in a way I didn’t used to.” [...]

(As usual, listening to Seth’s long list of negative items, I couldn’t help wondering why Jane didn’t appreciate the import of such actions at least intuitively, and do something about them.)

(Seth’s statement at the end of dictation for the 815th session, “I will try to begin work on our book in a more predictable fashion,” reflected his good intent, but things didn’t turn out that way. Jane and I let the holiday season intervene to some extent, and Session 816, which came through the day after Christmas, didn’t concern book work at all. [...]

(Tonight Jane was so relaxed¹ that I didn’t expect her to hold a session. [...]

[...] I am sure of one thing: I’m in contact with my deceased parents in ways that I certainly didn’t employ while they were physical creatures. [...]

[...] “And here I didn’t even know if I could have a session,” she said. [...]

13. But added a few weeks later: The idea, adopted so enthusiastically by so many class members, didn’t work out after all. [...]

[...] The room didn’t look much like our living room at the hill house. [...] I didn’t get to actually show the hole in the glass, though, but for some little time I kept laughing and saying, to everyone’s surprise and amusement, that I’d really had that adventure this morning.”

Jane did such a fine job interpreting the dream (in my estimation!) that I didn’t bug her for more details. [...]

[...] True, Jane didn’t express those feelings to me in those terms, but she let me know she was quite upset, etc. [...]

(I didn’t add that I was well aware of the time sequence here—that according to Seth I had a rather long life in Denmark in the 1600 ‘s —and that Rembrandt lived in Holland from 1606 to 1669.)

(“Is this in Italy?” I didn’t know whether to interrupt or not. [...]

[...] I had to tell her I didn’t know; I’d been too busy writing. [...]

(When Sue and Jane questioned me about this, I had to tell them that I didn’t feel anything out of the ordinary, but then I seldom do during sessions. [...]

[...] There was more here that I didn’t get down.

(She didn’t have any questions for Seth. [...]

[...] It didn’t seem natural for any creature to do that. [...]

[...] She continued, that it was because the same intense focus was partially used in the session tonight as in the last two sessions; Seth didn’t want her to overdo it, just to get used to it. Jane didn’t hear Seth tell her this within; she merely “got” the information.

[...] We didn’t hold our regularly scheduled session last night because we felt so miserable. [...]

(9:35 P.M. “Jesus, I didn’t know whether I could do it or not,” Jane said, “but I felt all that stuff there in a great big block, and I just had to get it out. [...]

[...] Jane laughingly told me that if the new data “wasn’t good enough,” she’d probably never again hear from the people involved — but at this time we didn’t realize what was to follow.

[...] I wasn’t quick enough to ask him; I didn’t remember the details in the 689th session well enough …

[...] But he didn’t. I said to Jane later that it seems Seth will tailor his material to suit our needs and/or moods of the moment, which may be one of the ways to integrate blocks of his material into a larger whole, which can display many facets or approaches.)

[...] She was still quite upset about the eye business, and so was I, although I didn’t think there was anything wrong with her eyes.
