(She did more coughing and blowing as the time passed. Carla took her temperature — 98.8. Five minutes later Penny hooked her up to another dose of antibiotic. I did mail until Jane had the session. By then most of the drug had been absorbed, but I didn’t call anybody. Jane was coughing enough so that she remarked that she hoped she could get through the session. The window was closed by now and the heat was on. It had turned very windy, and I thought it might mean another cold spell.)

(Jane called last night. She said she’d dozed through most of her evening TV programs — something she hardly ever does. The day was again warm — 44 degrees — when I went to 330. She had the heat off in her room. Her coughing is better today. She said her “eyes are terrible,” though the redness is largely gone. Her feet look much better again. She’s still on the Bactrim, and her temperature has been normal.

The body has many ways of accelerating its own defenses (cough). The so-called common cold is a case in point. I will speak more about that kind of mechanism at another time. The body is now, then, going full steam ahead, so to speak. The head, neck, and shoulders are being worked on to further strengthen the arms and fingers — hence the transient condition of the eyes.

[...] She began dictating in a quiet voice; she had been coughing a lot, but as soon as the session began the coughing stopped, except for a very few isolated single coughs she gave at widely separated intervals. [...]

[...] She coughed at break, but had not coughed during the above delivery. [...]

Ruburt’s voice will suffer not at all from our session, although I know that he has been coughing and hacking all day.

[...] (Florence tried to smother a cough and Seth boomed out.) You may cough to your heart’s content. You may all cough and have a coughing session!! [...]

(Sally softly cleared her throat.) A polite cough, indeed. [...]

[...] She then admitted that she’d become frightened today because she’d been coughing up mucous occasionally. [...] I was frightened by her reactions — appalled that after all we were trying to do, she still reacted to something beneficial — the coughing — as something to be scared of. [...]

[...] I’d started coughing after eating half of one of the candies I’d bought Jane for Valentine’s Day. [...]

[...] “I don’t understand how you can be so frightened of a beneficial thing like the coughing, yet put up with the inability to walk all these years. [...]

He did better than usual (comma), lately, in the store today, and immediately found himself substituting a bad coughing spell (in the store, P&C)—highly illuminating. But in his scheme of beliefs a cough can be rather easily dispensed with, and he was aware of this.

[...] Jane had begun coughing intermittently after last break. Now she coughed so steadily that Seth interrupted the delivery — which is a pretty rare occurrence. While Jane rested, I suggested that if Seth returned it would be better if he discussed the reasons behind her coughing. [...]

[...] She’d also been very afraid that the coughing up of mucous meant she was getting pneumonia — something she hadn’t told me. [...]

(She’s been coughing a lot and blowing her nose heavily since I got to 330 today. [...]

[...] Jane was still coughing and blowing at times. [...]

[...] No sooner was she out of trance than Jane started coughing. She said it was probably because she had picked up what Seth was going to discuss after break, although I had seen her take a swallow of beer just before she started coughing. [...]

(Jane now began to cough. [...] The coughing was not violent but it became persistent. [...]

[...] Jane had been dissociated, but toward the last realized she was coughing. [...]

(To Louise.) Now, if you want to cough have a good one and do not feel embarrassed. There is nothing worse than trying to cough and trying not to at the same time. Now, I will let you all take a break and you may cough to your heart’s content. I did not mean to give the suggestion if you do not have to cough. [...]

[...] You can even cough some more if you want. [...]

(10:48 P.M. Jane’s trance had been quite variable this time, and I had continued to cough. She said that Seth finally ended the session because her trance actually fluctuated as I coughed. [...]

[...] I had started to cough during Jane’s delivery because of the smoke from her cigarettes. [...]

[...] Again Jane had been coughing all day, but when she rose to begin the session the coughing virtually disappeared. [...]

(Jane had coughed but a few times. [...]

[...] She had coughed but little, yet did not recall whether or not she had. [...]

[...] You may, for example, sneeze or not sneeze, cough or not cough, walk to the window or the door, scratch your elbow, save a child from drowning, learn a lesson, commit suicide, harm another, or turn your cheek.

[...] Seth called for a break for Jane at 10:30 because she had been coughing rather steadily for some time. [...]

(Long pause at 11:14.) The coughing has brought into activation the use of certain muscles also, particularly in the chest areas, and taken his attention way from other areas of the body that are being revitalized while his attention is elsewhere.

(I had a brief coughing spell here, which of course hurt the side. [...] Finally Seth let me know in a good loud voice, that he hoped I noted the spots at which I coughed. [...]

(This noon, driving home from work, I pulled a muscle in my right side while wheeling the car around a corner—one of those painful things that you feel when you cough, breathe deeply, laugh, etc.)

[...] Her coughing and blowing has subsided somewhat, her temperature is normal.

(Just before the session began Jane started coughing quite a bit. [...] “It must be because of what I know Seth’s going to talk about,” she said between coughs. [...]

(Here, I abruptly had a coughing spell as I attempted to swallow a sip of milk. [...]

[...] She felt “funny” when I started to cough, since even though she stopped dictation she still felt suspended between the trance state and the regular state of being. [...]

(4:32 p.m. Jane wanted a cigarette, even though smokes make her cough. [...]
