Now, you each generally agree, I am sure, that you sit upon a couch. You do not perceive the same couch. You only perceive your own idea constructions. You cannot perceive those of another. Telepathically you transpose your ideas in line with what you know of the other person’s thinking. You agree that the couch is here. Now, it is true that within your physical system—for I know this will come next from our friend Florence—you can measure your couch. I expect at any moment anyone will get a ruler and measure it and then say to me that the couch is so long—how can you say it is not one couch? However, within your physical system the instruments themselves are distorted and, of course, they will agree with what they measure. There is no reason why they should not. Telepathically you all agree upon the placement of objects and their dimensions.

I have said this before also. If you were able to focus your attention upon the dissimilarities, merely those that you can perceive but do not, then you would be amazed that mankind could form any idea of an organized reality. I look now between the two of you (looking at the couch where Natalie S. and Arnold were sitting). When the others look at our friends here on the fancy blue couch, they see a picture of true organization. There is an individual here and an individual here on the blue couch with space between. The picture is equalized. It appears perfect and organized. However, the space between our two friends is not vacant. You merely perceive it as vacant because you do not perceive what is there. And so the picture is very organized.

As soon as you realize however that the picture is not complete, then you must begin to ask new questions, and the old idea of the perfect organization is gone. Now as you know, you do not perceive the atoms and molecules that swim about the room nor the atoms and molecules that fill this space between our friends, nor the forces—the field forces—that exist. The couch serves to unite them since they sit upon it. And what do they sit upon? Do you all know—emptiness that you perceive as solidity. Now, without your particular physical perfection you would not perceive the couch as solid. And consciousness that has different perceptive mechanisms than your own is unaware of our now famous blue couch. You make the organization your thoughts perceive as organization. You enforce the organization and indeed create it.

When Ruburt on the couch sensed himself in the chair giving a session, to himself on the couch, this was symbolic of a new kind of relationship between the two of us. [...]

[...] Ruburt sat physically on the couch, yet at another level he did sit here (in the chair facing the couch), and in our relationship that was a fairly “sophisticated” kind of manipulation, involving the projection of a form outward—the double. [...]

[...] Following this in a period of usual activity (the same evening), he sensed his own image speaking for me and sitting across the couch from him in our (Seth’s) accustomed position. [...]

[...] “When I sit on the couch and relax after supper, I don’t want to do anything,” she said. [...] She still sat in her usual place on the couch, and following a suggestion I’d made the other day she decided to try having the session from that position. [...]

[...] Now as she prepared for Seth to come through she sat upright on the couch. [...]

(Now Jane began to lean back on the couch; she looked to be much more comfortable.)

[...] She’s missed walking with her typing table often lately, yet her walking from her chair to the couch has been much improved —steadier and better balanced, although she’s still bent way over. [...]

[...] His steps by the couch are (underlined) firmer. [...]

Yet that government did indeed couch you, and now through your taxes you couch other younger people, who cannot contribute as yet. There is no doubt that the very wealthy abuse the system, and yet all in all it is a good one, couching the young while they learn, and is so doing, providing a basis from which new beliefs can indeed emerge.

[...] Later it seemed that the two of you made your way alone almost as aliens in your society, couched only by your own joint courage and determination. [...]

[...] I am obviously dictating this book, speaking through Ruburt, while Joseph sits on the couch across from a very specific coffee table, taking down my words.

For the purposes of our discussion, I must necessarily couch this book to some degree in the framework of time. [...]

[...] Your physical universe, then, had a nonphysical origin, in which it is still couched. In the same manner your individual consciousness has an origin in which it is still couched.

(Jane was now beginning to recline on the couch once more, while speaking. In each of these recent personal sessions she has ended up laying flat on her back on the couch while in trance—something she hadn’t done until recently.)

Each of you is couched now in the natural world, and that world is couched in a reality from which nature emerges. [...]

(Pause at 9:32.) The particular paper of suggestions—he will know what I mean—does contain a good variety of suggestions for him, couched in terms that are highly beneficial. Again, certain suggestions couched one way will work at one time, according to the circumstances, while the same group may be rather adverse to fit other circumstances. [...]

(Jane was again very relaxed after supper as she sat on the couch watching TV. [...]

(For the first time in a very long while, most of last week’s mail remains unanswered—sitting in the basket on the table at the end of the couch. [...]

[...] Her talk reminded me, paradoxically, that last night while sitting on the couch she’d been able to cross her legs in a way she hadn’t been able to do for a long time.

(I hurried to type the Seth portion of the session so that Jane could read it this evening—Wednesday—but from my writing room I can hear her snoring as she sleeps on the couch in the living room. [...]

(At about 8 PM this evening Jane fell asleep with a lighted cigarette in her hand as she sat leaning back on the couch. [...]

[...] She’s now developed difficulties with vision, hearing—especially in the left ear—walking, and practically all physical activities except sitting at her table or desk, or on the couch watching TV. [...]

[...] “I love the red couch cover you’re sitting on,” she said as we waited for the session—and indeed, the corded fabric glowed in the warm light cast by the table lamp on the room divider behind the couch; the divider separates the kitchen from the living room.
