(I read to her Seth’s opening paragraphs of yesterday’s session; these dealt with the roles of the conscious and subconscious minds. [...]

[...] She felt Seth’s presence “just below consciousness”, she said, and thought she might be able to speak for him in a natural manner without attracting the attention of others. [...]

[...] It was apparent that her control with this new method was somewhat unsure; she paused often while speaking, and appeared to have to make quite an effort to maintain just the right balance between being herself while allowing Seth to hover just below, or within her range of consciousness, so that she could pass along his data. (This had indeed been a new experience for Jane, and she called it a new state of consciousness for her. [...]

[...] Identity and consciousness existed long before your earth was formed. [...] Consciousness is the force behind matter, and it forms many other realities besides the physical one. [...]

Obviously, many riots are quite consciously instigated. Certainly thousands of individuals, or millions of them, do not consciously decide to bring about a hurricane, or a flood or an earthquake, in the same manner. [...] While conscious beliefs have a part to play in such cases, on an individual basis the “inner work” is done just as unconsciously as the body produces physical symptoms. [...]

[...] In your terms this in no way absolves those who start riots, for example, for they will be working within a system of conscious beliefs in which violence begets violence. [...]

As your conscious beliefs determine your bodily condition, and as your body is maintained at an unconscious level (though in line with your beliefs), so natural catastrophes are the result of the beliefs that give rise to emotional states which are then automatically transformed into exterior atmospheric conditions.

[...] As certain primitives do rain dances and consciously bring about rain, deliberately directing unconscious forces, so the people in these different places did the same thing quite automatically, without awareness of the processes involved.

[...] At times much information can be used from them, after analysis in conscious life.

These various stages of the subconscious represent what was once the conscious ego of an individual, left now almost like living archeological heritage, from which the present individual may draw both knowledge, psychic continuity and balance.

[...] The topmost layers of the subconscious hold then, first of all, almost conscious just-under-the-surface needs and desires; and under these those more deeply buried, reaching backward to birth, even as the loose dry autumn leaves still contain traces of earlier pigment.

Beneath this layer, in a third subconscious level, still dealing with the present personality, lie those possibilities of development which have lain barren and were not sufficiently strong to send up seeds to bloom in the sun of conscious ego.

[...] For the consciousness will come to life if it wants to. And if the consciousness picks a mother who wants to abort, then the consciousness is only here for a short trip. [...] Any consciousness that wants to be born is born. [...]

You think, for example, without consciously knowing how you do so, and you speak long sentences without consciously being aware at the beginning of the sentence what the conclusion will be.

[...] Ruburt’s intent was so strong to move away from the lighted cigarette that he ignored all impediments, and his unconscious mind beautifully followed his conscious mind’s intent. [...]

[...] But I found it ironic indeed that that capacity was there, while on conscious levels we were trying to move an inch at a time, when we could do so by leaps and bounds as far as the body’s abilities and willingness were concerned. [...]

(I tried to explain to Jane that fear on conscious levels was what was holding her back. [...]

It is true that some schools of knowledge almost glorify the use of some drugs as encouraging the expansion of consciousness and the release of repression. [...]

Those feelings do indeed encourage expression of consciousness, and release intuitive information that may otherwise be buried beneath tensions and fears.

[...] You do not have to try and blot out the physical world, or your ordinary consciousness, in order to achieve the necessary knowledge that leads to vibrant health or experiences. [...]

[...] The knowledge of multidimensional existence is not only in the background of your present conscious activity, but each man knows within himself that his conscious life is dependent upon a greater dimension of actuality. [...]

[...] In such a religious drama however (long pause), the main personality is much more conscious of his inner knowledge, more aware of his abilities, far better able to use them, and exultantly familiar with his relationship to all of life.

(Jane finds her “massive feelings,” as she calls them, not only instructive psychically, but exhilarating indeed when they encompass revelatory or transcendent states of consciousness. [...]

[...] This seventh inner sense represents an extension of the self, a widening of its conscious comprehension … or a pulling together into … a minute capsule that enables the self to enter other fields.

[...] No living consciousness exists on any plane without this tissue capsule enclosing it … To some inhabitants of other planes [realities] that have access to your plane, all that can be seen of you is this capsule, since such inhabitants have had no experience in your particular type of camouflage [physical] construction. [...]

Most people operate at one largely exclusive state of consciousness. Even most creative work is done at the recognized threshold of the normal waking consciousness. Ruburt was presented with—or presented himself with—a situation in which large portions of his creative life appeared in books that were written in another state of consciousness entirely. [...]

(Long pause.) He felt it his duty to examine his psychic material with supercritical force, since it seemed to come from the other side of consciousness, so to speak, and since it presented such a different picture of all aspects of reality. [...]

[...] Not that we hadn’t known from earlier material and our own conscious experiences that her mother especially had often exerted an unhealthy pressure upon the daughter—but I’d been taken back to realize that Seth was actually saying that Jane had considered herself evil.

2. According to Jane and Seth, within our time scheme each physically-endowed consciousness, whatever its form or size or complexity, inherently seeks to fulfill its own highest potential — not only for itself, but for the benefit of each other such consciousness in our reality. [...]

[...] Telepathy and clairvoyance, for example, are a part of natural effects, but they belong to a nature so much more expansive than science’s definitions that they have been made to appear as highly unnatural eccentricities of behavior, rather than as natural components of consciousness.

At a conscious level, of course, neither of you realized, or wanted to realize, the kind of complete repeal and overhaul that was implied by our sessions, and for some years you managed to hold many official views of reality along with the newer concepts, not ready to understand that an entire new way of thinking was involved, a new relationship of the individual with reality. [...]

“At the same time, it’s Rob’s usual self, learning from the creature-magical self, who then ‘gets the evidence,’ enlarges the magical hole in the glass; signifying two things — that the so-called usual consciousness can learn from the magical part, follow its lead and therefore catch itself ‘performing miracles.’

[...] Each personality to itself has continuous consciousness. Its consciousness is continuous and it knows who it is and it experiences no lapses. [...]

Each consciousness has its own responsibility for those thoughts and emotions and it accepts and originates. [...]

([Nadine:] “Is it possible to experience some of these personalities while you are conscious of the personality you have at the moment?”)

[...] And so it would help you if you realize that you are often using conscious thought as a blind to hide you from yourself and that there is nothing within the self that you need fear and that the true security of your identity lies within this inner self and that the abilities of which we have been speaking are simply by-products of the inner self, not to be pursued for their own use, but as natural to the inner personality, as hands are natural to the physical self. [...]

[...] Jane and I think that both situations, furnishing as they do large-scale frameworks for the almost endless convolutions of consciousness, may persist for many years, with no formal resolutions materializing. [...] I speculated that the overall revolutionary and fundamentalistic consciousness of Iran is like a creative vortex, surrounded by other great national consciousnesses that are strongly resisting its policies for their own creative religious and political reasons. [...] That whole area in the Middle East, then, is a stew of emotions, actions, and consciousnesses.

And yet the embattled consciousness of Iran persists, and will, I think, survive for a long while. Many consciousnesses in the Middle East have much to work out yet.

[...] In that regard, Ruburt’s response before such a session is natural, and to an extent magical, because he knows that no matter what he has been taught, he must to some degree (underlined) forget the questions and the mood that accompanies them with one level of his consciousness, in order to create the proper kind of atmosphere at another level of consciousness—one that allows the answers to come even though they may be presented in a different way than that expected by the rational mind.

[...] Finally, on September 23 [day 325 of the hostage situation], the inevitable happened in the very unstable Middle East: Amid that explosive mixture of secular and religious national consciousnesses “at work” there, Iraq launched an outright invasion of Iran. [...]

[...] The great miracle, in fact, is that each consciousness, whatever its degree, is itself and no other, even while in the unending fields of interaction it may be a portion of another — as a city is part of a state, or an individual is part of a family.

[...] There are as yet undiscovered, bizarre changes in the brain during certain dream states, an acceleration that quite literally propels the consciousness out of its usual space-time continuum into those other realities from which it comes.

In physical terms the tides and geographical aspects are involved, but these are “effects” having to do with curves of energy of which consciousness is composed. [...]

[...] Each of your “presents” becomes charged, filled with potentiality; and your entity, itself conscious energy, is also enriched by your various experiences, by the combined and magnified power of its own “past.”

Today I’d mentioned to Jane how I remembered Seth’s saying — perhaps a couple of years ago — that still untouched in his material is the whole question of the body consciousness, and its role in health and many other fields. Seth had indicated that he had available a vast amount of material on the body consciousness, and that he could give it to us at any time. [...]

[...] Otherwise, they immerse themselves in dreams in different kinds of dreaming consciousness that I hope to explain at a later date (louder).

[...] Take the idea of the book Seth mentioned on therapy and value fulfillment, and so forth, and what you said today about body consciousness. [...]

[...] In certain terms, however, “at one time” you had to learn how to do these things that you are not now consciously concerned with. At still other levels of reality, activities that you now consciously claim as your own have — in those same terms and from another viewpoint — become unconscious, providing a psychic history from which other identities emerge, as it seems that your own identities emerge from unconscious bodily activity.

Now there are also inner “broadcasts” going on constantly — to which, however, you are not consciously attuned. [...]

To obtain knowledge consciously other than that usually available, you pay attention to the pauses, to the implied elements in language, to any felt or sensed quality upon which the recognizable experiences of life reside. [...]
