(Now for the little dream I had while napping. I told Jane about it while she ate supper. I dreamed that I received a call from a clerk at the bank. The girl told me that one of the checks I’d deposited for Jane’s hospital fund wasn’t for $1000, as we’d both thought — but was instead for $1 million. I was totally surprised at the news. “Are you sure?” I asked. The clerk said she was, that we’d miscounted the zeroes before. “Hold that check,” I said to her. “I’ll be down there in 20 minutes.”

[...] He was one of the clerks, and I saw now that most of the clerks were quite young, and they were watching me.

[...] But what about the three books with my name on them and the clerk’s knowing smile?

[...] Finally the clerk offered to take me on a tour, when I told him I was going to explore the place alone in any case. [...]

[...] She knew the clerks in the stores and that was all.

(I should also note that when I met Curt at the lumberyard I never really got to talk much with him, because I was so busy running down parts and asking clerks for help. [...]

[...] At her hotel she left a message with the desk clerk to be awakened at 7 AM Tuesday. The desk clerk failed to call her and she was late getting to the seminar.
