(I am right—meaning in accord with my own nature—when I “forget” each book as it is done... Basically the creative play exploration, writing, is the main core of my creativity—and I do that for the love of doing it. I am“lucky” that the books sell, and that does mean that the world does accept “my work” to a certain important degree. But basically creativity is not a career in usual terms. It cannot be treated like a lawyer’s career or a scientist’s or whatever. When I started doing this, I aroused the protective elements—the conservative elements—of my personality... which immediately wanted approval for my books—not that I shouldn’t want approval per se but that I began to demand that my art provide all my needs; to financially support me, to give me honor among my fellows, a sense of belonging, etc. Now this can be expected to some degree for a noncreative career; but it can damage creative activity; the need for creativity naturally is... the creation of something new that disrupts the conservative principles; and that freedom is paramount. If you confuse the issues you try to temper your creativity (to gain approval, etc.) which can dilute the work; or you set up protective measures to protect yourself against the worlds disapproval or scorn.

(Long pause at 4:16.) Only when they pursue some death-defying career do such individuals feel safe enough to relax otherwise and live a fairly normal life outside of their death-defying careers.

I have given more material than I can say on the subject of Ruburt’s attitude toward creativity and what happens when he emphasizes the idea of work as work, or as a career, above his spontaneous creativity.
[...]
It is the overemphasis upon work and career—overemphasis, now, that brings about or triggers the fears behind the difficulties.
[...]
Remember, I am speaking of an overemphasis upon the idea of work, not about a normal concern about book publications, or career concerns, those are certainly reasonable.

I explained to Jane some thoughts I’d had in bed last night—that her returning home in reasonably good shape would solve all of our major challenges at this time: her career, income, insurance problems, physical freedom, the ability to travel if we chose—all of them, freeing us to start leading some sort of more-or-less normal lifestyle.

And an A, with a large family and a particular picture of the family, old, three girls with large hair ribbons, two boys, several years older, picture taken on porch steps very early 1900’s. Ruburt saw Seagull, or Richard, as a child who followed Eleanor’s advice, and in watching Richard’s career, was able to see more clearly what that kind of career meant.

There are tiny innocuous instances that come up daily: “Shall I go to the movies, or bowling?” “Shall I brush my teeth now or later?” “Should I write to my friend today or tomorrow?” There are also more pertinent questions having to do with careers, ways of life, or other deeper involvements.
