[...] It must have come to your attention that I have mentioned the nature of your love for each other many times—often when you would have preferred some other material —but I do again want to stress it as a vital ingredient in Ruburt’s recovery. But not only that: its importance in both of your lives now as you find yourselves turning new corners—for they will also be corners of achievement. [...]

[...] And she was out of it, but determined to do something. [...]

[...] You should see some more improvements, both in spirit and in mind very shortly, and you have me on the line for that remark—but for now I bid you a fond good evening. [...]

[...] It knows it is not the wind, but only feels the wind. Likewise Ruburt feels me but is not me. I may be a big wind, but I am not her big wind.

I do not know specific people, but I will improve upon these matters as our grand duchess lowers her guard. I am quite dependent upon your Ruburt-Jane, not in my own perceptions but in my ability to communicate them to you. The whole problem lies here, but we are making strides, and we are making them despite some personal temporary setbacks, when Ruburt reads a book that makes him worry about these sessions. [...]

[...] I hesitate to point this out, or rather Ruburt is hesitating about letting me point this out, but your present father’s personality would not have been half as hampered had he allowed it such contact. You do not have to fear heredity here of course, but rather examples received from him when you were very young.

[...] It was brief, but to the effect that if he were with a roomful of people he would not confront each one in turn but “experience” them altogether, using his inner senses to appreciate as a whole all the personalities and emotions about him.

Ruburt has not been reading Dunne, incidentally, but Priestley’s interpretation of Dunne, which is something else again, but fairly accurate.

[...] But this individual as seen by Priestley at this particular point is somewhat limited, still, by this time one. [...] From this he is free, but he is still somewhat bound by those events, though he may learn from them. [...]

It is true that Priestley speaks in terms of consciousness being retained at this stage, but a consciousness devoid of personality is an odd bird indeed. The personality structure changes, it is true, but consciousness of overall identities within any given unit of consciousness is always retained. [...]

[...] But things simply do not happen as Dunne supposed they did. He was correct in carrying his times further than Priestley, but he was incorrect in assuming the serialization continued indefinitely along the same lines.

It’s impossible to present here all of Jane’s own material on her sinful self—much as I’d like to—but shortly I do want to give portions of the first few pages to show readers how experiences from one’s very early years can sometimes have the most profound effects in later life. As will be seen, that material obviously raises as many questions as it answers, but right now we can do little more than touch upon the whole affair. [...] Certainly Jane chose all of her challenges in this life, just as I did, and as we believe each person does, but a major concomitant of focusing upon certain activities involves how one copes with them (often in close cooperation with others) as the years pass: What new and original depths of feeling and idea are uncovered, layer by layer, what insights, what rebellions, and, yes, what acceptances….

And to me this was no play but the main challenge—to discover while within one life all life’s meaning; to acquire in one life’s vulnerable swiftness evidence of eternity’s breadth and depth, to sniff out its extended unknown dimensions. So if in the pursuit of such goals I overdid my cautions and overreacted, it certainly was not out of malice, but in a well-meaning attempt to protect the creative self—to keep a hand of caution on its course lest the centuries of man’s belief in sin carried a true weight that I shared but could not comprehend.

[...] Jane often dozed in her chair in the daytime, but woke up during the nights to watch old movies on television. [...] It surrounded our bedroom—but even as bleary as I often was, I became acutely aware of how that serenity could be jarringly compromised by the television set, showing programs that contained their own times of day and seasons.

[...] It was short but, as I expected it would be, excellent. [...] Jane went into trance as easily as ever, but her Seth voice contained the same underlying tremor I’ve noticed on a number of occasions since she’s returned home. [...]

[...] I’ve written my own longer notes explaining why I couldn’t find my account of the dream—I believe I simply forgot to write it down—but since I remembered it well I described the dream to Jane now. I plan to do a small oil painting or two of the sketch I’ve done of Mrs. Johnson, plus another image of her that I hadn’t drawn at the time, but retain well.

(A note: I must write that not only was I surprised that Seth opened the session with an analysis of the dream, but that I was even more surprised with the generous connotations he ascribed to it: I may love my fellow man, but often times feel that that feeling is compromised by events in our world, even though I fully acknowledge my own part in helping create that world in the most intimate detail. [...]

He still does not have all of the implications of the resolutions, but they will come to him. It is important that he and Eve not feel martyred, taking in the father, but I believe they both understand their positions there, and recognize they are forming their own realities and considering an act of kindness for its own sake.

[...] The individual would be called ill for thinking the world was against him, but the organization’s similar beliefs would be more unthinkingly accepted because of its sheer size and power in the society.

[...] Now you do not properly listen to what I say and if the proofreaders were reading that sentence they would change it to “you do not listen properly to what I say,” but I mean you do not properly listen and there is indeed a difference. [...] But if you want to know what we are doing with the Sumari language, my dear cousin of Richelieu, we are taking away your ball and that is why you all feel so uneasy. [...] You may forget what you had but you will know that you knew the answers for a split second, and the tiniest cells in your fingernails will remember. [...] But a chase is precisely what you need. [...]

[...] They are lovely games, but they are games. But there is always an opening door when the Sumari come home. [...]

([Bette:] “Yes, but I think I was set up for that. [...]

I would leave an envelope, but no one would put anything into it except questions and I have plenty of those. [...]

It is the most physically oriented portion of your inner self; but it is not, however, apart from your inner self. [...] It cannot shut out information from your conscious mind, however — but it can refuse to pay attention to it.

(11:10.) When you find these thoughts in yourself you may say, and rather indignantly: “But those things are all true. [...] But it causes your physical experience.

[...] Finding the thought you may say, “But it is true; I am. [...] But that is a belief, and a limiting one.

Your Willy is in no danger, but show him your love, and regulate his ingoing and outgoing. Not that Ruburt need regulate his, but that his distraction or impatience causes the cat to overreact.

[...] But if you drop the time concept and then view the conscious content of your mind through other core ideas, you are still structuring. [...] Build them up or tear them down, but do not allow yourself to become blind to the furniture of your own mind.

(Jane had delivered a rather lengthy but informal session for our guests last night, as we lingered around the supper table after a late meal. [...]

[...] This took place not on January 25, however, but on February 10, when the manuscript on the Seth material and the poetry book were mailed together. But Jane wrote letter #4, concerning the Seth material, on January 25. We did not use twine on the package, incidentally, but did use it on the package containing the tape recording Jane made of some of the poems in the poetry book. [...]

[...] He should understand this by now, but the effort, energy and concentration that is expended. Now, it is to be expected that he expend energy and that he concentrate with some thoroughness, but at times he becomes emotionally weary as a result of expending huge amounts of energy within a small amount of time, comparatively speaking.

(“Ruburt’s association is with something that did not arrive on time, but let that one pass.” After break Seth tells us he hoped to make this clearer, but could not. [...]

[...] Father Martin was a doctor before entering the religious life; he knows of the sessions but has not witnessed any or read the material. We considered asking his help in the matter of getting some data on Jane’s physiological states, but did not go through with the idea because of lack of time.

[...] But where this self -conscious self ends, another self-conscious self begins. The two selves, being self-conscious selves, cannot be aware of any reality but their own.

It has a connection with a clock, but is not a clock. It has hands but it does not tell time. [...]

(“The edges of the object would ordinarily be sharp, it seems, but they are somewhat blunted.” [...] She feels the sharp edges is a reference to the beer glasses depicted on the coaster: one can think of glass ordinarily as sharp-edged, but to be useful as a drinking vessel the material would have its edges smoothed, or blunted.

On occasion he is in somewhat deeper a trance state, and our results are better, but this does not teach him what I want him to learn. [...] For with this training he will be able to give specificinformation, but he will also have some knowledge of how this comes about. [...]

[...] His voice was almost angry, but not without compassion. ‘Now then, I will tell you what to do,’ he said, ‘but I won’t be communicating with the part of you that uses words.’

If illness were thrust upon action or upon the personality from the outside, then the individual would be at the mercy of outside agencies, but it is not. Personality is affected by outside agencies, but in a most basic manner, it chooses those actions which it will accept.

[...] Sue had been taught as a child to repress emotions, but the time had come when expression was imperative. She wanted to strike out but didn’t feel that she should, and the denied actions then inhibited the function of the right arm that would ordinarily do the striking. [...]

[...] While she remembered the dream clearly and saw its instant results, the information was not given to the conscious self (not even in the dream drama) but to other layers more intimately concerned with body-mind mechanisms. Complete mobility of the arm and shoulder resulted, but there was still some soreness from the calcium deposits that remained.

[...] I simply wanted to help Jane, live quietly, and paint with some kind of passion I’d always envisioned but never achieved. [...] With the writing I sought to make sense of everything at least intellectually, but for the moment at least, I thought, this left untouched what seemed to be the more powerful emotional tangle of beliefs. [...]

[...] As it happened I woke up with a start, feeling at first what I thought was a spasm in my chest, but quickly realized it was a part of my dream reaction. [...] I’d wanted to work on it this morning but had postponed doing so until tomorrow, so I could quit painting early this morning. [...]

[...] I’d thought I was doing fairly well there, but evidently Leonard represents a host of old fears that rose up en masse when triggered, and caught me unprepared. But my learning seems terribly slow and ineffectual.)

[...] “You’ll be lucky to get a session out of me,” she laughed, but at the same time she felt Seth around. [...]

Knowing your reincarnational background, but not knowing the true nature of your present self, is useless. [...] You may have brought negative influences into your life for a given reason, but the reason always has to do with understanding, and understanding removes those influences.

[...] Theoretically, then, in each life you would become stronger, healthier, wealthier, and wiser, but it does not work that way, for many reasons. [...]

[...] Others have a series of female lives and then a series of male lives, or vice versa, but the entire reincarnational framework must involve both sexual experiences.

[...] No existence is chosen for one reason only, but would also serve many other psychological experiences.

The pressure, in one way, came from two sources; from the conscious (underlined) but still probable individual selves who found themselves alive in a God’s dream, and from the God who yearned to release them. [...] But in these terms such tremendous power resides in such primary pyramid gestalts that even their dreams are endowed with vitality and reality. [...]

[...] Jane again had a deep trance but returned from it easily. But strangely, and for the first time after a session, she discovered she couldn’t operate her voice. [...]

(The evening was again very hot and humid, and Jane had been bothered by such conditions all day; but she wanted to hold the session as usual. [...]

(Her pace as Seth was slower than Monday’s, but still a good one. [...]

[...] At the same time you had not chosen that source either but very briefly. Creative work was his joy, but that creativity also had more and more connotations that applied to work and money.

[...] Out-of-bodies, writing and spontaneous impressions are all things he likes to do, but some fell inside his work category and some did not. [...] But do not overdo it, as is his inclination at times when he thinks in terms of absolutes.

[...] It is important that he go with you shopping, as he has, but also that he walk outside even if he begins very slowly. If he cannot go around the block to start with, he feels despondent, but the habit of walking will grow as he gives it a chance.

[...] While you believe in the system you can find some help in it, but it is temporary, not permanent, and further binds you to a limiting system. [...] You can physically alter the imbalance sometimes, and gain relief, but another set of symptoms, physical or not, will materialize.

[...] The individual wants to grow in terms of personhood, but is afraid of doing so. There are always individual variations that must be taken into consideration, but often such a person feels a martyr to his or her sex, imprisoned by it and unable to escape. This can obviously apply to cancers affecting sexual areas, but is often in the background of any such condition. [...]

(10:18.) Usually the second puberty follows the same sexual orientation as the first, but not always — for it is quite possible for the new affiliation to be the opposite of the first. This is even rarer — but so does the species protect itself.

[...] Your sexual qualities are a part of your nature, but they do not define it.

Your beliefs so structure your experience individually and en masse, however, that evidential material contrary to those ideas shows itself but seldom, or in distorted or exaggerated form. [...]

[...] He said Jane could die, but obviously she didn’t. He was correct in mentioning anemia, incorrect about liver and spleen problems, as far as we know. [...] One can always cite energy blockages, and probably be correct, but this says little. [...] Also, one not only has to penetrate the reality of the person being read, but that of the medium doing the reading. [...]

These steps seem very obvious, and perhaps too easy — but they will bring an immediate sense of ease and a peace of mind while your inner reserves are being released and activated. [...]

3 but all life is not your type life.

Every so often I’ve thought of averaging Jane’s dictation time for Seth Speaks and Personal Reality in the same way, but haven’t done so. [...] But given her abilities, I think her speed of production is a close physical approach to, or translation of, Seth’s idea that basically all exists at once — that really there is no time, and that the Seth books, for example, are “there” to be had in final form for just the tuning in. (In Section 3 of this volume, Note 2 for Session 692 contains information on another way by which we can move closer to Seth’s idea of simultaneity from our physical reality, but that method grows out of material not discussed here.)

[...] But maybe we’re just in the middle, sensing imperfectly the existence of other remote versions of ourselves that will appear in a ‘future’ too far ahead of us to know. Maybe I’m some distant ancestor of Seth’s in those terms, alive in my life but only a memory in his. But he insists there’s fresh action in the past; so if that’s the case, I’m still searching out my own paths.

[...] The question must be hypothetical, but I’m sure she could as far as having Seth’s material available is concerned; she’d need only the necessary physical strength. [...] Seth wouldn’t have our current daily activities to draw upon for some of his analogies, for instance, but in such cases I think he’d either call upon similar episodes from our pasts, or cast his material in different ways — which would yield the same results.

[...] We go along in our own stubborn ways, knowing that our outlooks are rooted in the Western traditions of the world, but also knowing that there exist all about us these numerous other philosophies or systems, some of them many centuries old, that the human race has created to help it explain reality. [...] (A simile I often think of here compares Eastern and Western life and thought with the right and left hemispheres of the brain; they’re separate, yet united; each half performs functions that complement and to some extent overlap those of the other, and together they operate as a whole.) But we dislike the idea of nirvana in Buddhism and Hinduism, which calls for the extinction or blowing out of individual consciousness, and its absorption into a supreme spirit, usually after a series of lives.
