(The day was much cooler when I left for 330 — only 29 degrees. I took Maude Cardwell’s letter to show Jane. She’d gotten back from hydro pretty late. “You don’t want to hear about all of that,” she said when I asked her how come. “Talking about it makes me sound like I’m bitching all the time. It worked out all right.”

Dictation. (Pause.) All of this talk about exuberance, health and vitality may seem quite beside the point to many of you. (Long pause.) It may seem instead that the world is filled with unhappiness and disease.
