(Jane told me she was a little surprised that Maude Cardwell hadn’t answered my letter of a couple of weeks ago by now — but I said I thought things were proceeding as all of us wanted them to, really. After all, I hadn’t given Maude our phone number — though I plan to — and we’ve maintained a distance from her and others who have offered help. If we behave that way, we can hardly expect others to act differently toward us.

Now: I bid you another fond good afternoon.

We will have more to say about the process of birth later on in this book. For now, I simply want to make the point that in the most basic of terms the human birth is as orderly and spontaneous as the birth of any of nature’s creatures — and a child opens its selfhood even as a flower opens its petals.

Now I may or may not return, again according to those rhythms of which I speak — but know that I am present and approachable.
