(I’d stopped asking Jane for sessions, private or regular, since most of the time it seemed obvious that she wasn’t up to it, so she rather surprised me after supper tonight by saying that if I “sat with her” for ten minutes or so she’d see if she could have a session. She added that she often thought of trying something that way, but that she hesitated to ask me to take the time to sit around in case nothing happened, since she knew I was trying to work as much as I could on the intro for Seth’s Dreams. My answer was that I’d gladly do the sitting around if she wanted to, on the chance that we might get some helpful material—especially about her own condition.
(“I’ve got that damned question-and-answer thing going on inside my head,” she remarked now with some exasperation. She’d just spoken a phrase I didn’t understand as I worked on these notes—something in answer to a question she’d thought I’d asked. I hadn’t said anything. She has been doing this since suppertime, and has repeated it at other times. She was angry and concerned. “Jesus, now I just started to drift right off,” she said.

(Jane has achieved more motion and movement in her legs—her knees especially—since we began propping her feet up on a box as she lays in bed. This promotes drainage of the edema in her lower legs and feet, and has been quite effective, since she responds quickly. At the same time the new motions have resulted in feelings of soreness in her knees, but she recognizes that they’re positive responses.

Now: Ruburt’s body is experimenting with its own metabolism. The gland is (underlined) activating itself by itself—off and on, so to speak, giving a sputtering effect. Overall, the body is exploring the best rhythm of metabolism, and fitting itself in with the medication. In some fashions it uses more energies at times than at others, and slowly begins to demand more energy, so there will be periods of unevenness—but he is (underlined) being provided for. He is (underlined) safe, secure, and protected. Remembering a few small but potent suggestions will of course be of greatest benefit—particularly to offset any negative hospital suggestions, which do of course exist. On the other hand, in such cases remember that often a doctor’s or a nurse’s negative suggestions or fears, voiced, simply give voice to the individual’s own fears. And if he or she can understand this the individual can then counter such suggestions that seem to come from “outside,” I will indeed, and before too long, begin again some therapeutic material, winding this in with other pertinent data. The two of you can best help each other above all (long pause at 8:29) by communicating as honestly and clearly as possible, for expressions of your love will then come to the surface where on both of your parts that certain emotional expression often goes hungry.

(Long pause.) I am watching out for Ruburt, and have been, and for you as well. Your own natural persons, however, yearn to express whatever emotions and needs they have at any given time, even if from the outside such expression may certainly seem most unfortunate, and bring up more problems.

For now I bid you a fond good evening—but your policy of sitting and waiting is a good one, at least several times a week.... I did not suggest that you go to the medical profession, or suggest you stay away from it specifically, knowing that your own beliefs would lead toward the proper decision whichever way it fell.
