DELETED SESSION

[... 1 paragraph ...]

(No session was held Monday night because Jane was so relaxed again—that is, I’d thought that was the reason, but more about that later. “When I sit on the couch and relax after supper, I don’t want to do anything,” she said. “I don’t even want to have a session tonight. I don’t feel him around at all.” She’d called me at 8:45. She still sat in her usual place on the couch, and following a suggestion I’d made the other day she decided to try having the session from that position. It meant she’d be able to lean back, “taking the pressure off my ass,” she laughed. “But I don’t know how it’ll work out.”

(Actually, I learned as we talked, Jane had called me for a session Monday evening, but I hadn’t heard her. I’d taken it for granted that she wanted the rest instead. But she said when I didn’t answer she decided to let the session go.

(See the attached experiences of Jane’s, of March 13 and l6. I showed them to her to refresh her memory. As with her earlier experiences, these were excellent and quite to the point considering her hassles. It was easy to lose track of them, unfortunately. “I’ve completely forgotten your questions, too,” she said. As I had, for the most part. Nor have I added to that list for a long time now. One thing that inhibited me is that I was aware, of course, of the predominantly negative context or tone of the whole idea of the list. It’s a contradictory attitude, of course, since these private sessions are an effort to learn something about our hassles—not a self-congratulatory exercise.

Now: we have been having a rather concentrated group of sessions, and it is quite natural that Ruburt should want to take some time out as he has, so that he can assimilate the material.

He is having this evening’s session at least partially out of his sense of responsibility—because he thinks he should, and because he thinks you think he should. He must, or should, feel free to have the sessions—to have the sessions.

Our late sessions helped bring about several important dreams that I have mentioned, and also activated other therapeutic layers, so that different kinds of messages have been received while Ruburt was in the sleep or dream state.

[... 1 paragraph ...]

To that extent he has carried on the sessions, using them to good purpose. The natural person is of course the natural dreamer, and it is for that reason all the more unfortunate that psychology managed to divorce the world of dreaming from natural healthy psychology. In the natural person, dreams always serve a balancing function, leading toward self-illumination, self-instruction, self-help.

[... 1 paragraph ...]

(A good point. I mentioned to Jane when I read the session to her from my notes this morning that it’s one of those obvious things easy to overlook: Jane’s steady relaxation is bound to help....)

[... 14 paragraphs ...]

(Long pause.) I am trying to connect present and past here in a very important manner, so that Ruburt can understand his own psychic roots, for they are indeed the basic ones, and that understanding is as important to his development now as any other material that I might give. I will then end the session, unless you have a question that you particularly want answered this evening.

(10:12 PM. Jane’s delivery from her new position on the couch had been steady and emphatic until she slowed down noticeably toward the end of the session. I told Jane it was an excellent session and that she’d done well. She’d alternated while sitting between perching upright and leaning back.)
