Once those old beliefs are understood for what they are, they will no longer be considered as shameful in themselves, nor humiliating, or as attitudes to be accused of (long pause, one of many), but as a personality’s way of still preserving old beliefs, whatever their nature, for the feeling of safety that they still implied. When that is understood you are already on the way to a new, more expansive creative path (all emphatically).

The old attitude kept reinforcing the idea of self-disapproval, accusation, period. What is wanted is another matrix or support from which the personality can assimilate still newer knowledge, and continue to develop—generally speaking—with a sense of relative freedom.

The so-called doubting elements of the self have every right to sit in the council of the personality, rather than to be shunted aside, for they are themselves quite curious, and they have already of course been weakened. It is only when they are denied, accused of sabotage, that the situation becomes one in which positions are hardened at both ends, so to speak.
