(This afternoon and evening, and somewhat to my surprise, Jane has been talking about discussing her physical symptoms in her new book, God of Jane. I thought her changed attitude stemmed from her long phone conversation with Tristine Rainer, of Dan Curtis Associates, a television production company that wants to option her life story. [See the notes for the deleted session for August 20, 1979.] They wrote August 8. If her life story were ever to be filmed, the symptoms would have to be considered, we found ourselves thinking. They are obviously a strong part of the drama of the whole thing.)

You saw in your parents the first signs of illness and age as you thought of those things. You were into your 40’s, and felt your own abilities still somehow unchallenged, not fully used. You fell ill. (Pause.) The two of you from your first meeting actually responded largely to portions of yourselves unmanifest then—to portions of yourselves that you are only now becoming. You sensed the shape of the probability that is now your life, that is now your life together (intently). And from that probable future in your past, your creative abilities were accelerated.
(9:50.) The York Beach affair happened, Ruburt’s Idea Construction experience, and the beginning of the sessions. Those events were necessary, or events very much like them, if, granting probabilities, the two of you were eager to have years of satisfying life and work. You were both growing very bitter, your idealism turning into a disillusionment that could most easily have turned into despair.

There is a power of value fulfillment and growth within each individual that must be satisfied. It is the power that makes physical growth possible, the power that is behind the fetus. You know ahead of time the nature of the period into which you will be born. (Pause.) You were both born with certain abilities, and you knew ahead of time that you would have to enlarge the framework of conventional concepts if you were to have room to use those abilities. In a way, they gave you both a second life, for in the old framework there was no satisfying (underlined) or creative way to go.
(10:10.) Again, in a way (underlined), you have given a second life to many other people. (Pause.) Some of this is simplified, but it all basically applies. Ruburt’s main problem was that he tried too hard to protect himself because he believed it was necessary. These ideas have been delivered to you in serial time. Some get through easier or quicker than others, and a belief in the need for protection has been the most stubborn lingering belief from Ruburt’s past in this life.
