(These notes will recapitulate two rather surprising events. While we were having last Saturday’s session, someone knocked on our door; I didn’t answer it and they left. Sunday they returned: Rusty and Dr. Hal from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, on their yearly visit to us with a cheesecake. As the four of us talked for an hour or so two things emerged. Dr. Hal had a teacher many years ago, a woman, who used to walk with William James; indeed, he read part of his Varieties of Religious Experience to her. James also discussed his own psychic experiences with this woman. Hal told us her name but we forgot to note it down. Interesting, that this information would come to us just as Jane is preparing her James manuscript for Prentice.

(The second event took place starting at 8:15 PM this evening. We were visited by a youngish couple from London, Canada. They too had knocked at our door earlier —while we were napping this afternoon. The knocking woke me up, but I saw them pulling out of the driveway so let them go. Jane and I ate supper with the lights off and the blinds drawn, but by the time she went to work Jane decided to turn on the lights in her writing room, and see them should they return. A most fortunate decision on her part.

(It wasn’t until after the Canadian couple had left us, actually, that the implications of what had happened began to sink in. I thought the odds alone staggering that it had happened at all. During their visit the woman, Carol, several times expressed the thought that she returned the second time, to see if we were home, because “it was meant to be,” or words to that effect. She also said that if we hadn’t been home, that was meant to be also. Carol had met an individual named Ron who had visited us here at 1730 two years or so ago—not long after we’d moved in, incidentally. Jane and I haven’t seen Miss Dineen except once soon after Miss Callahan’s death at least 10 years ago. Personally, I do not think I would know her if we met.

(Note that in both cases, involving Rusty and Hal, and Carol and Fred, the couples returned to 1730 after their first visit had failed to make contact with us. Since we have all names on file now, more information can be obtained if we need it. Note: Rusty Carnarius has relatives living on Coleman Avenue. Either Jacobs or Jenkins. [Check boxes.]

(Seth covered both visits in his material tonight. One aspect not covered, and which I forgot to ask about, involved Rusty’s meeting with the president of Prentice-Hall; will try to remember to ask about this next session.

(10:19.) This sort of thing happens frequently with Miss Dineen, and consciously she is drawn toward areas of town, for example, in which certain individuals are shopping or strolling, so that while she visits few fashionable establishments, she enjoys a series of seemingly unrelated, pleasant encounters with strangers.

In a manner of speaking, the gentleman’s (Hal) visit, while Ruburt is doing the James book, completes an intent on James’s part that he had in life. The event, again, in a way is even separate from Ruburt’s present connection with James, but followed as a result of James’s living curiosity regarding highly gifted mediums that might exist after his death.
