DELETED SESSION

[... 1 paragraph ...]

(The session was not held last night because of Tam Mossman’s visit.... I told Jane before the session that all day I’d been thinking that there was still a cause or causes for the symptoms that we didn’t know, or hadn’t uncovered yet. Perhaps a relationship between the intent to publish the sessions, and the idea of exposure or threat for not “toeing the mark.” [Tam is Jane’s editor at Prentice-Hall.]

(I also asked Jane why she hadn’t done much about her eye condition since it began a year ago, other than an occasional pendulum question, or the sessions Seth had mentioned it in. A little later she said that she was “upset” by the question, that it threatened her. She added that it touched something within, leading to feelings of hopelessness—and that now she had to get out of them before she could have the session. I mentioned that the question had probably touched upon hidden defenses, fears that the “protection” furnished by the eye condition would be taken away, and she agreed.

(The next day, before I began typing this session, Jane outlined material she’d picked up about her eye condition this morning, evidently in response to the question of the night before. I don’t know it well enough to quote it here, but suggest that she write it up and add it to this session, for it sounded very good.)

Now a private session, not for publication.

[... 2 paragraphs ...]

Our sessions began, really, as an extension, a natural enough development, the results of a personal search. Give us a moment.... I have given more material than I can say on the subject of Ruburt’s attitude toward creativity and what happens when he emphasizes the idea of work as work, or as a career, above his spontaneous creativity. I got my message through to some degree on several occasions for example, when his arms were suddenly free. It is the overemphasis upon work and career—overemphasis, now, that brings about or triggers the fears behind the difficulties.

[... 10 paragraphs ...]

The sessions I gave on spontaneity and work should be most helpful now, as long as the fears are now being admitted. There is nothing wrong with fears. Unidentified fears are something else.

I want to comment on your pendulum sessions, however. First of all, the fact that you do them together is highly significant and beneficial, more significant than you realize. Ruburt’s experience with you in the bedroom was an excellent example of your enduring loving relationship, and represented your single and joint decisions to utilize your love and devotion to solve the difficulty.

Ten pages is too much to do in one session with the pendulum. Look at your questions as if you were asking them of a person, so that in one session do not act as if an answer given before has not been given. Do you follow me?

[... 2 paragraphs ...]

It was important that Ruburt state his position, for example, by saying clearly that the symptoms threatened him, and that they threatened him more than any scorn, and important also that he state that the symptoms inhibited his writing. Once the pendulum shows you that the subconscious does understand, however, it is all right to check now and then, but those statements can act as negative suggestions otherwise. Each session should be thought of with its questions in consecutive terms, so that later questions follow the reasoning pattern already given.

Questions like “Are you lonesome?” certainly need not be not asked each day. I am simply asking that you not give the subconscious too many issues to deal with at once, and the last part of each session should always reinforce any positive steps you have made and end with a few, very brief, clear positive suggestions.

[... 1 paragraph ...]

You asked the question about the subconscious this evening, before the session, and Ruburt immediately interpreted it in the light of the following: the weight of the responsibility it carried for all those psychologists, and all of their patients, and his responsibility to obtain, in capitals, the answer, not only for himself but for all those other people. The idea behind the question does of course spring partially from your private, practical concerns right now, and yet it also springs from Ruburt’s and your great natural curiosity.

I will answer it, and at our next session, when you remind Ruburt of the great creative climate in which it can be “answered.”

[... 1 paragraph ...]

That is enough for this evening, but the session, again, can be most beneficial if it is taken to heart. You have been highly active with Ruburt, though you do not remember it, both of you in Framework 2 clearing up old issues, forming closer communications with each other, and dropping old beliefs.

The question about the subconscious’s view of the body will be answered along with the other one, and at our next session. Your own support of late in particular is highly valuable. End of session, and a fond good evening to you both.

[... 1 paragraph ...]

(11:00 PM. I was pretty depressed by session’s end, since it seemed we had so far to go. The first question Seth referred to was the one about why the subconscious didn’t realize it was going to far, when it imposed or brought about symptoms, as in Jane’s case, that were proving to be too damaging to the body, compared to what they were supposed to protect the body against.

(To do: read sessions in Chapter 15, Personal Reality. Check pendulum for good things done in past. Check pendulum for good things done in past we’re pleased with now.)
