His psychic experience has grown and expanded, yet all the while controls were used. The controls served many purposes. They kept him writing, cut out distractions while he was learning. They also kept him from what he considered spiritual betrayals: he would not be a television personality, using his great powers of persuasion, until he knew what he was persuading people to do. His symptoms have been a fear of growth on the one hand, and on the other a way of effecting growth with safety, according to his beliefs.
