(To recap: after supper tonight Jane told me she felt “warm.” Our apartment was quite chilly in actuality, as it has often been since the June flood; both of us had been cold all day. Now Jane was warm and more relaxed than usual. I went to work in the studio on the illustrations for Oversoul Seven. Jane told me later that after I left she began to get very strong feelings that the phone was going to ring, with some exceptionally good news for us. Possibly Richard Bach and his editor, Eleanor Friede, were involved. These feelings became so strong that Jane wrote out a description of them.

(Jane continued: “But that devil image comes from a long pagan line of earth gods, and always represented the innate knowledge inherent even in the earth itself. All the ideas of the fear of the inner self come from the basic division that has for so long existed in the minds of man since the birth of organized religion... Religion tried to make the devil into a black shadow of God, His counterpoint and yet opposite, but man forgot what counterpoint meant. Personified, for example, the devil is the fury of a storm, but disconnected from a storm’s great creativity.”
