You are not given 800 or 5,000 milligrams of talent. You are given your own nature, certain portions of it naturally tuning in to what in your case you could call the channel of art. You sense its great dimensions, the richness of its complexity. You are particularly attuned to it.

[... 3 paragraphs ...]

Your knowledge of form now can work for you automatically, serving to give structure to those ideas which will come to you freely and clearly. Your own (in quotes) “psychic abilities” now give you easy (underlined) access to inspiration. You must forget the idea as you have it, that your painting must serve to work out problems. In that framework you set problems.

In doodles, in oils, in whatever suits you, and whatever suits you over a period of time, will find its own pattern. Do not harness yourself with the idea that you had (underlined) “so much” (in quotes) ability, and that you have not used it. That is not the case. You have instead an open channel. You chose to spend a good amount of time dealing with form.

Van Gogh, for your information, was (underlined) obsessed personally with ideas of self-mutilation, and underwent great inner torture. He chose those feelings however so that he could view the world and reality in a certain light. That light enabled him to do what he wanted to but could not fake: paint the world through that particular unique vision.

Your own great problem, the inhibition of emotion, fits in with your own designs as well as his did. He was not ever satisfied with his work and had far less satisfaction in general from his fellow beings than you have.

[... 1 paragraph ...]

Van Gogh was true to his vision, which means he was true to the self he created for himself in that time, and so must you be. But you must also have faith in what you have done, for it was all done in faithful rendering of your view of reality (in quotes) “at any given time.” And therefore the fact for example that you withheld certain kinds of emotion from it is not a failure.

[... 6 paragraphs ...]

Now you cannot regard your ability as something apart from yourself, which you must use. It is instead your own characteristic method of expressing reality, of perceiving inner data; the particular channel of your own understanding, learning and application, to which there are no limits.

[... 2 paragraphs ...]

Now give us a moment. You must recapture the feeling of painting for fun. The play of the gods: your natural expression. Instead you project ponderous ideas of success or failure, consider work as a series of problems to be solved, and forget the idea of spontaneously creating.

[... 4 paragraphs ...]

Your own giving is flowing into your work. Let your work have its way. Do not insist it be such and such. Allow it its flow; and now I bid you a fond good evening.
