I told you that he was ready for a giant (underlined) improvement, and a necessary requirement was and is his recognition of the impulses that he has been denying or restricting. Getting up and down from the floor, as I knew it would, reawakened muscular memory, you see, and this in turn knocked at the door of his consciousness, jarring him into new recognitions. He will know that he is accepting these impulses, and they will become points of triumph now, and can serve as gateways to achievement.

He is seldom aware that that impulse is even there, so I want him to look for the impulse whenever a situation would seem to call for that motion, and he will find it… other impulses he is now becoming aware of. At one point they were buried. This includes the impulses to sink down upon his knees when the occasion warrants it, and to rest upon his hands when the occasion would warrant it.

It is his fingers that want to grasp firmly, and he out of fear, fearful habit, has blocked the impulse. Reading this will remind him of that; but again here, when he is about to open something, or to grasp it, I want him to try to feel the impulse to do so, and then go along with it.

These activities also open up nerve sources and make more energy available to him, because he is not using so much energy in blockages. He quite surprised himself this evening, and there are more surprises to come. Tell him tomorrow morning I expect him to begin writing his book. He is simply to write even if he only produces five pages that he does not use, or that he ends up throwing away.

This material should be placed with the other recent sessions for him, on the top. I am keeping up with his progress, and these hints for him are uniquely tailored for his present development. He will do well with his book. He sees himself as not having begun it however, even though he has a chapter done, with which he is not entirely pleased.

Now this impulse business is highly vital. When you see him checking an impulse to move, and it is often obvious to you, then handle it in this way. Simply remind him that it is natural for his body to move. That is, do not be critical, but firmly encourage him. Following this advice will have far more reaching and far quicker beneficial results than either of you now realize, and will also release energy that will be quite obvious to the both of you.

He also blocks impulses to eat during the day, or sometimes before bed. He does not do this at meals, but the small snacks that he would ordinarily want, he does not take. He has not been tying to run, as I specified. This is important, for to him running is a happy, spontaneous activity, and he has blocked the impulse at times rather consciously because he feared he could not do it, that it would hurt or that he would look silly.

Here, for his own reasons, as given much earlier, he latched upon what he considered and interpreted as cautiousness on your part. You used to tell him (underline used) not to tell everyone his good news, for example, perhaps lest it did not develop. In his own way at that time (underlined), he picked up the habit of checking happy spontaneity, and he felt you were accusing if he displayed it, and in small ways began blocking. Later he himself did not trust any good development, and so felt unsure in expressing it. He also interpreted a habit of “natural secrecy” (in quotes) on your part quite literally. To keep a secret was not to express it. This is simply background that did apply however to the running aspect—either running physically or running off at the mouth. So it is important that he begin showing himself that he can run, and now he knows that you will heartily approve. Now give us a moment for our dictation.
