The overconscientious self is protecting the whole personality against what it considered evil. It can be reeducated. (Pause.) There is a cleavage apparent in Ruburt’s distaste of the word God, for example.

In Catholic terms he consecrated himself to God as a child daily. He has done so again but without admitting the fact. There is some difficulty here... (pause) not necessarily a blockage, but a misunderstanding.... We shall have to clear it up later.

The message (the contents of the last session, the 367th), so far has reached the super-conscientious self. (Pause.) It is not kicking up a fuss so much as hesitating in caution. It was the spontaneous self who kicked up the fuss this afternoon, thinking: hurry, hurry, hurry, see things my way (when Jane tried to work on the dream book, unsuccessfully).

You can be stern here, again counting on his passivity in the love relationship. Reassurances... gentle strokings....(Pause, eyes closed.) We will have to add more here, also later.

Last night’s poor sleep and symptoms were simply a reaction to the information given (in last night’s session), and represented a momentary (underlined) stiffening of position by both sides of the personality. For both felt equally guilty for the physical predicament, and were acting self-defensively. (Pause.)

The autobiographical material produced as novels by Ruburt were also helpful as safety valves. (Pause.) An integration is already beginning to take place, however, since last evening’s session.

Patience rather than coercion should be used. (Pause.)

The old neighborhood has enclosed him, and he must now truly escape its limitations while using the psychic potential of his experience as an integrating power. (Pace slower yet.) It is also responsible you see for the remarkable potential that he has. He does not feel free to use his full energy until all portions of the personality are convinced of the goodness of his purpose. (Long pause.)
