DELETED SESSION

(This is the regular session for December 14, 1970, Monday, deleted from the record.

(Before the session I asked that Seth discuss two questions. 1: Why Jane’s knees had been so bothersome lately when she was obviously making good progress otherwise? 2: Why I caught a “cold” last week?

(Jane’s knees had been poor for some weeks. According to my own troubles, my pendulum insisted that I did not have a cold, even though I had all the symptoms. I came down with it after asking Seth last Monday, December 7, whether the taped session we’d made for the Claire TV show in Washington had been shown yet. My pendulum also told me that communication problems involving Jane, other than the TV show question, caused the “cold,” etc.

The earlier group of symptoms resulted from several causes. First of all they were in a way, a way of handling a situation. You were not sure that it was safe to communicate spontaneously or easily—emotionally or sexually, with Ruburt following the two personal sessions. (The two deleted sessions of November 30 & December 2.) The cold effectively kept you from physical contact.

You felt to some extent that you had fallen down in taking advantage of the sessions, that you were not putting into practice certain behavior there suggested. (True.) There were of course other reasons also. The question you asked in our sessions was in your mind symbolic of a lack of communication still between you and Ruburt, at deeper levels. (The question about the Claire TV show.)

There was also, even then, in the back of your mind the feeling that personally you could use the sessions for information in which you were highly interested, and you suspected that Ruburt would not share the feeling, or would even unconsciously block it.

Briefly, on the cigarettes: it is an automatic part of your session format now—a part of the setting. This is simply for now a brief explanation.

(I had a brief coughing spell here, which of course hurt the side. This happened a few times during the first part of the session—usually at key bits of material. Finally Seth let me know in a good loud voice, that he hoped I noted the spots at which I coughed. I said I was aware of the connection, etc.)

Now. Give us some time on this, and remember we have not given that particular material in that way before. (True.) He felt that you ignored him when you became ill—that you were growing so morose that you felt life meaningless. Then the sessions came (in 1963), and he felt they had saved you both.

They also served to see to it that the two of you spent more time together. Then he felt that all he meant to you was contained in the sessions, that as a woman and a wife you found him far less fascinating. Other background information you have been given, and this is background for what is coming.

Now give us a moment. It seemed to him lately that you did not want to dance when he felt at his best, and you wanted him to when he felt less well. Both of you have been making adjustments since our last two sessions, and in a way Ruburt’s knees represented the same kind of problem as your symptoms—matters brought to the head, and yet not acted upon.

At the risk of being repetitive: if he concentrates upon his work, the morning issue will take care of itself, and by work I mean not only his writing, but his own individual psychic endeavors. He measures what he does daily against what you do daily, and feels automatically guilty if you do more than he, or even if he is doing watercolors while you are typing a session.

Now we will have some sessions as you would like, along the lines of your personal affairs, and resume dictation as we all see fit. Does that suit your fancy? I do not want you to have a laughing fit.

(10:55. I believe the above is new information, and some that we certainly shall explore. After the session, I explained to Jane that my going out to work perhaps represented an unsolved problem on my own part, and that she shouldn’t be that much concerned with it.
