(A one minute pause.) We have mentioned this earlier. In his mind religion was connected with self-mortification. On the one hand it set itself against spontaneity. The organized church feared it. On the other hand Ruburt was spontaneously religious.

He tried to slow down. The pent-up spontaneity helped make our sessions possible, and in one way or another will always erupt. Then, as you know, the opposite tendency began to show.

It was to some extent aggravated by books telling of the experience of various mediums, and by what he has read concerning the attitude of parapsychologists toward them. He projected these feelings then. They were adopted, for no one has treated him in that fashion.

(10:45. Jane came out of trance easily, though it had been a fairly good one, she said. Break time found me very discouraged. I was angry and disappointed; I was fearful that Jane and I would never be able to rise above our problems and fulfill our potentialities, which I knew to be excellent. I was especially concerned that Jane wouldn’t be able to surmount the problems, so explicitly delineated by Seth, above, and so eliminate the symptoms. I couldn’t see how she would be able to really give her great creative spontaneity full reign, to accomplish the things I felt she had in her.

You do not give complicated problems to an idiot to solve. You give him simple ones.

Personalities bent upon great endeavors often set themselves great problems. The problems are not meaningless. They are like examinations. (Long pause.) In Ruburt’s situation in the present, he is in your terms, freeing himself. He has just been through one of the most difficult problems that he set for himself.

The next one will be to use the abilities that he will then be free to use, correctly. Without the past challenge, or one like it, the various elements of the personality would not be sufficiently united, strong enough, to carry the abilities that have been latent within it.

The situation when it is settled will result in perhaps the best possible one for both of you, from all standpoints, and such would not be possible had you taken a simpler way. The opportunity to use your abilities therefore is greater. The problems that you have encountered lead to inner recognition and understandings that add to the quality of your work, and actually improve the nature of the abilities themselves.
