These steps, ultimately, can only be taken by the personality involved. If all illness has been adopted by a personality for a particular reason in this life, then it has been adopted so that the personality involved will understand the illness as a materialized symbol for a challenge or problem that the personality has set. The personality therefore, if he or she solves the problem, will conquer the illness.

Now I understand that to one closely and daily involved with the woman, it is difficult to see purpose or reason in the condition. Since the egotistical knowledge of the woman does not include this data, there are of course difficulties here also. But the inner self of the woman knows that in facing such a condition and finding nevertheless some moments of joy, even some compassion for others, that the personality has satisfied many of those feelings of inadequacy from the past existence. (One minute pause, eyes closed.)

Obviously the cause behind illness is not always the same. In a reincarnational sense, the personality for a while takes the role of a sick person, as an actor would, and is completely immersed in it. Obviously again, more dimensions are involved here than in an actor’s role. The actor would merely try to imagine how it would be like to be in such a position. The person in the reincarnational role is as immersed in it as possible. He decides to take the role for various reasons of his own, and the inner self knows that the role was chosen.

The inner self does not feel threatened, therefore, only the part of the personality that is momentarily unaware of the true situation. Others also respond, and are in this drama for their own reasons. (Long pause.) The drama has a theme, and through working out the problems therein presented the theme becomes clear. In some psychological circles there are therapeutic groups that operate by setting up such dramas. Remember, the purpose is therapeutic, though it may not appear so. And none of this should be taken to mean that the sufferings are not quite real to those involved.
