In some respects this is meant to be a cozy, confidential session. Now. At long last our friend has really embarked upon our book. Now beside everything else, Joseph, there were stresses and strains put upon Ruburt’s personality. They were not caused by me, and yet the experience itself, as any new experience, any worthwhile endeavor, any breakthrough, was bound to challenge the abilities of the personality.
My personality itself has been a stabilizing influence, and I have given Ruburt counsel even when he was not aware of my doing so. His personality, like your own, has benefited in ways you cannot measure. As you have always known, his attitude toward our book represented, of course, his attitude toward our sessions. Intuitive freedoms should now be realized on his part. He had been blocking many of these. I will say little of the symptoms. They will vanish as he continues to come to terms with himself.

Now as you know, I am a teacher, and interested in instruction. I am not a doctor. This means that my approach to a given problem will be vastly different than the approach of another personality, even on my plane, who has different interests. Therefore I am concerned with, and I emphasize, the importance of inner knowledge, and see physical symptoms for what they are—a reflection of an inner reality.

These steps, ultimately, can only be taken by the personality involved. If all illness has been adopted by a personality for a particular reason in this life, then it has been adopted so that the personality involved will understand the illness as a materialized symbol for a challenge or problem that the personality has set. The personality therefore, if he or she solves the problem, will conquer the illness.
In some cases the personality deliberately places himself in such a position that the illness itself, the bearing of it, brings about certain needed spiritual characteristics. In such cases the illness serves a purpose. Illness is not thrust upon anyone however. We have given information concerning the woman’s past lives, that have led to the adoption of this illness.
Now I understand that to one closely and daily involved with the woman, it is difficult to see purpose or reason in the condition. Since the egotistical knowledge of the woman does not include this data, there are of course difficulties here also. But the inner self of the woman knows that in facing such a condition and finding nevertheless some moments of joy, even some compassion for others, that the personality has satisfied many of those feelings of inadequacy from the past existence. (One minute pause, eyes closed.)
Now. No (underlined) physical condition is irreversible, with the exception of loss of limbs and definite organs. The personality is always free to choose, in your terms, its future. But the choice is with the inner self, which is the real identity. There are of course other elements entering into any such situation. Telepathically received suggestions from others, and so forth. (Pause.)

Obviously the cause behind illness is not always the same. In a reincarnational sense, the personality for a while takes the role of a sick person, as an actor would, and is completely immersed in it. Obviously again, more dimensions are involved here than in an actor’s role. The actor would merely try to imagine how it would be like to be in such a position. The person in the reincarnational role is as immersed in it as possible. He decides to take the role for various reasons of his own, and the inner self knows that the role was chosen.
The inner self does not feel threatened, therefore, only the part of the personality that is momentarily unaware of the true situation. Others also respond, and are in this drama for their own reasons. (Long pause.) The drama has a theme, and through working out the problems therein presented the theme becomes clear. In some psychological circles there are therapeutic groups that operate by setting up such dramas. Remember, the purpose is therapeutic, though it may not appear so. And none of this should be taken to mean that the sufferings are not quite real to those involved.

Earlier I recommended a good hypnotist, hoping that the woman might find her way if positive suggestions were given; for even if the inner self had solved its problems, it would need help, psychological help, in reversing the physical trend. I hoped such a hypnotist could act therefore as a guide, if the personality was ready to begin a journey to health. The inner personality was not ready.

However, the doctor of whom I am speaking also has an excellent bedside manner, so to speak (humorous and slow) and he usually communicates with other levels of the personality that are unknown to the ego. (Long pause.) There would be no harm then, and perhaps some good done, by making such a contact.
