“Seth material” search engine (Jane Roberts)

(Today Jane got the idea for her next book, following the dream book, just completed. She is very enthusiastic about the idea, and regards it as a breakthrough re her habits and thinking. It should be noted here that the dream book was rejected last week by the first publisher to see it, Doubleday; but oddly enough Jane feels the idea was at least partly sparked, for the new book, by this rejection.)

There will be an uneven display, a gyration you see back and forth as you turn your attention to his poetry, and then to his books. In the poetry you have seen for some time now an indication of acceptance and of belief. This has not shown itself however in anything but the poetry.

My material, now being used in classes (ESP), will indeed draw other students. Not because it is mine but because truth can be sensed within it. It will provide a built-in impetus. It will also bind the students together as a group. There will be a group gestalt operating that should result in very definite benefits to them and to Ruburt. It is no coincidence that he waited this long to introduce the material for class study.

(Smile.) We have managed to do fairly well without anything like his full acceptance. We shall indeed do much better now. This simply means that he has taken several giant steps, necessary ones. But these will make future giant steps easier. There has been a change in our sessions. His more relaxed inner attitude has given us more available energy. Which we hope to use in a variety of constructive ways.

His classes will show the change. His students perfectly sensed his attitudes, and while he led them with his right hand, he cautioned them to hold back with the other. He offered much, but would only deliver a portion. The classes will expand, and with students who will fit in admirably, for now his position is a stronger one.

The strong energy that was being diverted was working to his disadvantage, and you have felt it as a burden and a drag. You should now begin to feel almost immediately the addition of this reclaimed energy as it works for you. I told you that the crisis would come in any case, regardless of the field of activity chosen by Ruburt, but in no other field or activity could victory mean so much, or open so many potentials.

You may take a brief break and we shall continue. (To Peggy:) You will be a witness to your friend’s improved conditions. On several occasions in the past I would have spoken to you, but it would have been against Ruburt’s wishes.

(During first break I had mentioned being curious about what Jane’s eyes really see, or are aware of, when they are open during a trance. From scatterings of data Seth had given in the past I thought Jane’s eyes, even though wide open, did not see others present as they were, as physical entities, but perhaps as electromagnetic personalities.

(I now repeated my question, partly as a means of getting Jane onto another subject and to help her control the depth of the trance. For some reason I felt at the time that she did not want to explore too deep a state this evening; but events proved me mistaken here. Jane resumed in the same manner, but with her eyes closed, at 10:00.)

Now. My immediacy varies. According to circumstances I can more clearly become present. On some occasions my nearness is a psychic matter, but more than this alone.

(At about 10:10 the phone rang. Jane appeared undisturbed as Seth, but I asked her to wait. I talked with Claire Crittendon and her friend Bob, in Fredonia, NY, incidentally answering their questions about trances, etc. Jane herself remained in trance for a few minutes but then came out by the time I hung up at 10:20.

(She had put her glasses on after leaving trance, and now left them on when she resumed, as Seth. Now however there was a marked difference in her manner. Instead of the heavier and strong usual Seth voice she began to speak in almost a normal manner. I knew she was in a trance however, but doubted if a casual observer would be so sure. Her eyes were open and very dark; she smiled and spoke in a pleasant, almost lilting, much quieter voice.)

The smile and gestures are his. The trance state nevertheless is a deep one, but in this condition all of my energies can be used for other work, such as the gaining of clairvoyant material, as in the new work episode.

(All this time Jane had held a half-full glass of wine in her right hand. I had been watching it, but she spilled none. Now she set it down.)

This will take some acclimation on his part; for his manners and gestures and behavior is maintained but my consciousness is behind them. Now in this state I am indeed very close, although it will be more difficult for you to sense my presence.

When this method is thoroughly learned and Ruburt allows me greater control, then you shall notice a greater sense of immediacy and vitality. But as I come through to you more clearly in this manner then Ruburt and his own gestures and mannerisms will recede to a like degree.

(Jane now sat leaning far forward in her rocker; her head was far down, toward her knees, facing the floor. The voice was still deep but not so muffled, eyes still closed. I can say the voice sounded more like an old man’s voice, and not much like either Jane’s voice or the usual Seth voice. The voice now had almost a resonant quality.)

(I was watching as best I could for any effect of transposition or facial change, but had noted none.)

(Pause. Jane now sat more erect in the rocker, and when she began speaking again it was plain that the familiar Seth voice had returned. The voice was good but not too loud; eyes opened again.)

(The second effect did produce a little alarm when it began, but she mentally told Seth to go ahead. She was well aware of the difference in the two effects. In the second effect, Jane said she felt a distinct trembling in her chin as it was lowered against her chest, but Peg and I hadn’t observed this. Jane likened it to perhaps the trembling of an old man’s chin, and this is in character with the old man’s voice we heard. Jane knew the voice was muffled and strained; it was a completely new experience for her.
