We must be very careful here. The event may involve the wife’s mother…. (See page 185. Pause.) There is no basic contradiction between the man’s ideas and those orthodox ones followed by his wife. The difference is only an apparent one. A difference of interpretation. She has clothed a basic idea of reality in certain garments, and he has chosen other garments. Both are necessarily distortive, but beneath both is the same reality.

I am not sure here. It seems that a very young boy, a survival personality, has met her on these occasions. (Pause.) A relative from this life, I think. (Long pause, eyes closed.)

(This material had been on her mind for the past few days, to the extent that some physical symptoms of her [Jane’s] own had shown themselves. Questioning on my part, and Jane’s use of the pendulum, told us these symptoms, somewhat annoying and at first puzzling, were related to the above material.
