The dream of which the man spoke to Ruburt had some clairvoyant elements in it, but the time of the woman’s death is not in the immediate (underlined) future.

We must be very careful here. The event may involve the wife’s mother…. (See page 185. Pause.) There is no basic contradiction between the man’s ideas and those orthodox ones followed by his wife. The difference is only an apparent one. A difference of interpretation. She has clothed a basic idea of reality in certain garments, and he has chosen other garments. Both are necessarily distortive, but beneath both is the same reality.

The other event of which I spoke will occur first, but this does not mean that the wife’s death will immediately follow. She is indeed receiving instruction when she is in the dream state, and she has already on several occasions had a preview of things to come.

(9:42. Jane said she had been well dissociated while giving the material, but still remembered it to some extent. Her manner had been concerned and careful, with many pauses and searching for the right words.

(This material had been on her mind for the past few days, to the extent that some physical symptoms of her [Jane’s] own had shown themselves. Questioning on my part, and Jane’s use of the pendulum, told us these symptoms, somewhat annoying and at first puzzling, were related to the above material. Since we learned their cause they have slackened a good deal, but I asked that Seth discuss them in case there was more to be learned here.

Now. I believe that the wife’s mother will die first, but I do not want this sent to the son-in-law. If it is not the mother, then the aunt. A woman very close to the wife, I believe, now, will die before her and be waiting for her.

Now. For your private information, middle or late March… I do not know whether this is the woman’s death (open eyes, pointing at me), but it is an event involving death of a woman (gestures) close to the wife, you see?

The man may have more on his hands, you see, than he does now. I do not see any point in informing him, because of the suggestions involved. Probabilities do operate, but I do sense this rather strongly, as if many probabilities pointed in this direction. (Pause.

Spontaneous sessions may be held, but the overall routine should be continued. The channels have been opened, and as a rule, deeper and stronger contact will follow these same patterns. There is even for Ruburt a certain security and comfort in this accustomed routine, that will allow him to hold some truly spectacular sessions.

Now. He enjoys having sessions to some degree for his students, for he responds to their desire and need, but he distrusts himself more when you are not present, you see. (Long pause.) This should vanish in time. It is a new experience for him. In such cases, you see, he must trust himself entirely to me, and since he distrusts himself and me to some varying degree, then there is some conflict. This is not of a severe nature.

It is indeed what you saw, and has for you a deep meaning. The religious connotation from your past life, given a modern interpretation. (Pause.) The crucifix always appalled you, but not the bare cross symbol.

Indeed. But it is not meant to be finished, nor cast, for it is a transition and will lead to another sculp, more in keeping symbolically with what you have learned since.

This sculp represents more, literally, than your past life’s feeling, since it is, now, a mobile cross. There will be a change of simple relationships within the structure, and of color and texture, to follow. A less balanced but more maneuverable symbol—still based on this structure however.

(“I thought I glimpsed some figures in a pulpit, but I’m not sure.”)

( 10:55. Jane said that during our minute of quietude she felt a projection of energy toward me, not strong but definite, and that this seemed to “open up” into a room. It also involved or contained the newer sculp, she thought, but she was not able to describe or draw it.)

This 394th session was held on February 19, 1968. At the end of the private session of December 11, 1967, I described to Jane an internal vision I’d just had, and made notes about it and a quick drawing. In part: “Briefly but rather clearly I saw this hanging sculpture. I knew it was mine. The piece was of cast iron, with a soft mottled black-brown patina, densely conceived and I liked it very much. It was perhaps two and a half feet tall, hanging from a ceiling by a chain.
