The tangle in Syracuse will not be quite as tangled as he imagines. Two men will be fairly reasonable. These are impressions. A stout man who either wears glasses, or has worn them, with pale eyes; or the lenses of his glasses are extremely pale. (Pause.)

(9:15. Bill could not say much about Seth’s data. He said that Seth had correctly described the stout man with glasses, though the description was so general it could apply to many.

Now. Our Jesuit finds spontaneous projections most beneficial on a subconscious level, to relieve pressure. Quite literally he does indeed step out of himself. This happens much more frequently than he realizes. He has not utilized suggestion, however, to any significant degree as an aid in controlling his symptoms.

There will be other people who leave in the meantime, and autocratic behavior. You had better stay clear of involvement. The full extent of these policies in their specific form is not realized by the man’s superiors. The man thinks he is acting in response to demands put upon him by his superiors.

He is behaving in a compulsive manner. (Jane’s head drooped) His activities will cause a near-(underlined) crisis situation at the paper. He is squeezing the life from it symbolically and he senses the emotional (Jane’s voice sounded almost drugged here) crisis toward which he is propelled. There will be repercussions at his home first, and signs appearing there first.

(10:17 break. Jane had a time coming out of the trance. Her eyes wouldn’t open, etc. Peg said that the atmosphere bit fits perfectly and that she and Bill had suspected a couple of the points already. Peg says that H [the man] does believe he is acting in response to his superiors. Jane agreed with my idea that Seth put her into deeper trance in order to allow the material to come through [since it is emotional, related to friends and so forth. After five or ten minutes Jane felt better, and had a cigarette.]

(In this last segment of the session, Jane’s voice was extremely low, and dwindled almost into nothing as the last words were spoken. I was very near interrupting the session. It was strange to see her whispering the words to herself then trying to make them audible to us. Many were repeated in this way. Jane didn’t feel particularly well before the session. After finally coming out of the trance—this took awhile —she felt good. She knew the glass was going to fall dimly, but after that she lost contact. She felt that her face was different in a strange manner, that muscles were relaxing into different forms but no one noticed any change. I rather think that Seth put her in a deep trance for this highly charged material to protect her from the sort of thing she went through with Barbara when he wasn’t around.)
